Redskins definitely use gold in their color description. The other 3 are all definitely yellow.

Lol, I understand that people are attracted to the absurdity of the name... of course it's endearing. But it's still absurd, lol.... if absurdity is the objective. Hell, I'd like the New Orleans Probiscus Monkeys or the New Orleans Longnosed Bandicoots, or the New Orleans Fighting Platypuses. There, those are absurd, and endearing and automatically Top 5, .

I actually like Seth's idea for the Hurricanes... that's pretty damn awesome and relevant.

There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

There is an NHL franchise with the name Hurricanes, I am sure there could be some issues there.

It's not just about the absurdity, it is locally relevant, and Pelicans are pretty much apex predators, it's not a whole lot different than calling yourselves the sharks. If you think they are only goofy you've probably watched too much Finding Nemo.

Yea, I hear pelican-related human deaths are on the rise.

Pelicans as a species aren't even geographically unique to n'awlins, they are widespread throughout the world, so why they landed on Pelicans as something that somewhat uniquely separates that city is a lil beyond me.

You know, I think absurd is a pretty apt label for the entire thing. It's just absurd.

Yeah, a whopping one dude has been killed by sharks this year so that seems pretty irrelevant to me. Just like sharks, pelicans are the apex predators of their food chain for the most part. It's really no sillier than having any other animal related mascot name. Maybe your issue is just with American team naming conventions as a whole.

Lakers have had "gold" in their description going back to their days in MN. They're referred to as "the purple and gold" Pittsburgh actually uses gold to intentify the colors too. So does GB.

I think the confusion actually makes his point.

Louisiana is the Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on the state flag and seal, and official state painting.
I think this is the answer you are looking for. It was in the first post of this thread, if you bothered to read it. Pelicans might not be unique to that region, but the obviously connect with it for some reason. If being unique to a region had anything to do with the name then there would be no teams with animal names as very few animals have such a small range to be unique to a single state, let alone city.

Lol... These Pelicans have some ardent defenders! I'm not taking this near as seriously as you guys are, evidently.

Hardly, I just saw there was a new post. When I read it it asked a question that was already answered, so I answered the question for you. Just trying to spread knowledge around. More people who are knowledgeable the less people make a fool of themselves or lead the ignorant down the wrong path.

Because I'm entitled to post in here. I think it's a pretty funny topic, we're about to introduce a team named the Pelicans to the NBA and I seem to be the only one that thinks it's silly as hell. I'm not getting all up in arms about it, lol.

Not the first time a team was introduced as a goofy bird, after all we were graced with the Mighty Ducks, thanks Walt Disney.

Nah, it's black and gold. My brother-in-law is a yinzer, and his whole family is very adamant about the Stillers being black & gold.

Anyone can call yellow "gold" all the want, but it's still actually yellow.

Merchandisers tend to call it "Athletic Gold". But yeah, it's pretty much just Yellow.

Not self-promote (but I will anyway) - I've been researching this stuff for years and years:
