Default When the Going Gets Tough: Some Guidelines Clarifications

So the team is losing, players aren't living up to some people's visions of how they should play - yet others remain optimistic and hopeful.

This is no surprise, it is the definition of a wide fan base. Some people will only see the good in a team while others will only see the bad. The vast majority fall somewhere in the middle.

However, stressful circumstances bring out snippiness, thin skins, and short tempers - sometimes from new posters who don't understand a veteran's general persona, but also from long-time members who take out their frustrations on the board.

Given the way we've seen things going on PD, it's time to bring out some clarifications on exactly what isn't going to be tolerated - also, to make sure people know what WILL NOT be considered violations.

    1) Criticizing the team or players, especially when specific shortcomings are pointed out, is not a reason to attack a poster. Any name calling, piling on, or other rude behavior simply because someone expresses a contrary opinion will be dealt with.

    2) Being a starry-eyed optimist, especially when specific bright spots are pointed out, is not a reason to attack a poster. Any name calling, piling on, or other rude behavior simply because someone expresses a contrary opinion will be dealt with.

    3) Criticizing a player does not constitute being a "hater". Expressing a negative opinion does not constitute being a "troll". Use of these terms will bring serious scrutiny and may result in infractions if they are being flung about purely as insults or ways to dismiss an otherwise valid opinion.

    4) Post-game threads, almost by definition, are where the initial visceral reactions to a game are going to show up. They may manifest as deeply depressive rants or wildly enthusiastic raves. Consider the timing and realize that later reflection may temper extremes. Fans are a teams greatest cheerleaders or jeerleaders, and that's part of what this board is for.

    5) The admins - and ONLY the admins - are the arbiters of what will and will not result in warnings, infractions, or bans. If you are offended by a post, REPORT IT. Do NOT publicly cry for the admins to get involved, or make snarly comments about whether someone is or is not getting away with something. The admins have a very difficult job, trying to balance civility with free and open expression. They may choose to err on one side or the other, but it is THEIR responsibility. Bottom line is that assessing penalties is NOT a spectator sport, and to assume that the admins are not taking action or trying to come up with solutions is most likely a mistake. If you don't like an individual poster, use your ignore button and don't rise to any bait in quoted posts.

Pacers Digest should be a safe place to express our feelings about the Pacers and the ups and downs of being a Pacer fan. We do this best when we understand the wide range of opinions that constitute being a fan of the NBA in general and the Pacers in particular. We can disagree heavily and yet respect each others' boundaries and personal space.

Let's remember, this is fun. Have fun, doggone it.

Great post, couldn't agree more with these guidelines. Almost every single one gives me pause to think about my own behavior. Not stifling, not free-reign. JUST RIGHT. Keep up the great work, admin team!
