I flew from Atlanta to Indianapolis late last night. As we were descending into Indy at about 11:40 or so, I saw an enormous mass of flame from the window and a perimeter of sirens around it. The first thing I did when I got home was turn on the news. Thoughts are with everyone affected by this.

My inlaws lived in the neighborhood. They haven't released any names but you can imagine how bad the situation is for everyone who lives there.

I felt my house shake when it happened. In Greenfield. And I also suspected a meth lab.

Not to speculate on this situation itself but out of curiosity would a meth lab explosion pack that kind of punch?

I certainly hope not as well, but I've never seen something like this so I wouldn't know.

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing, that is some destruction right there. There have reportedly been no gas leaks found yet. My thoughts are certainly with all affected.

That's a mile away from where I used to live, I can't imagine the chaos. That's just an enormous explosion. Also, my heart goes out to all my friedns in the Greenwood Community Schools family, sounds like they lost a great teacher.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I just hope this turns out to be a true accident and not some kind of insurance scam that went horribly wrong.

Someone posted a comment to a WTHR story last night that makes me VERY suspicious.... Apparently the boyfriend of the divorcee who was living there is a known conman. Can't find the link now.....

I know they insurance company is already doing their own investigation into the cause. I work for a major personal insurance company, we got a regional wide email this morning about it.

EDIT: Just reread the email. They've been in contact with multiple firms for investigation.

Well, it seems it safe to speculate aloud now....
I read in one news report that the house at the center of this had been on the market, then taken off in March.

The family wasn't home when it happened because they'd went to a motel/hotel because the furnace wasn't working.

    -
Exactly how likely is a modern era furnace to explode to this degree without some help? Yeah, anything is possible I suppose but that is curious.

If the family with no heat would've moved to a motel on a 20deg night I might understand but this was a rather comfortable weekend. Again, curious. Also convenient.

Not sure why the house would be on the market a year and then taken off the market. Could be a logical reason, could be when the plans for something like this started and knew it wouldn't look good for the house to be on the market when it happened. And it wouldn't look good for it to have immediately went off the market either. So a buffer between Summer buffer between spring and fall might've seemed good enough.

If this really happened because of a furnace the amount of devastation has me curious how likely that would happen on its own. Not to mention the family not reporting smelling a gas leak (which doesn't seem to have happened)? Then they had the good fortune not to stay in the home and instead rent a motel room on a night where the heat wasn't that important but would be the night the furnace exploded?

    A lot of coincidences...

You know it's been pretty hard for me to swallow anything but some sort of foul play this whole time. This would have to have been one hell of a gas leak, and a furnace? Eh, I don't think it could cause this sort of devastation.

The real question, if it's a gas leak, is where the spark to ignite it came from.

If it's a gas furnace, it would have a pilot light. The water heater, if gas, would also have one. I would assume that the water heater would be in the vicinity of the furnace.

I'm no gas expert, but gotta wonder just how much gas would need to be in the area to cause that big of an explosion. Certainly the pilot lights on those two wouldn't be the cause, because I would think it would have sparked long before that amount of gas was able to build up.

The whole thing is just tragically weird.

I still can't believe I flew right over this thing no more than 30 minutes after it happened. The size of the blaze from the sky was surreal. I thought it was a factory burning. And there was just a massive perimeter of sirens around the area of the fire. I knew that whatever it was, it was so big that the local news would be covering it live. First thing I did was turn the TV on when I got home.

So far, they haven't found any evidence of any gas leak whatsoever.

This interview doesn't exactly mesh with some other reports. Setting the record straight or things not adding up?

I have a friend who lives in the neighboring subdivision. He told me that a trusted source says it will be ruled foul play in the next few days, which makes sense, they even put the cat into a kennel for a weekend. Who does that?

Someone needs to be going on death row. My guess is that its the conman boyfriend.

A white van? What the heck. The whole thing is really bizarre and if it was random it's honestly kind of scary if the person is still on the loose.
