Default It's the most wonderful time of the year...

Yes boys and girls it's our favorite time of the year (besides sports) when all the Black Friday ads are starting to appear. Name brand Blu-Ray players and Harmony remotes for $39 dollars and that most important movie accessory the West Bend popcorn popper.

Disappointment so far no decent discount on stand alone OTA DVRs.

Me too. Looking for a 40-42 in one, hopefully Samsung.

And I'll be getting my share of dvds.

I went to Wal Mart to get oil and ended up staring at TV's. I was thinking 60"... maybe 65".... But then there was that 70" on display.

I have a 53" RPTV so any new TV has to be bigger because that is the law I'm pretty sure.

I don't really know what I want to be honest. And there's a smidge of interest in a 3D television. I think it's a fad... but it's also the latest thing... So I dunno about going that direction or just finding a bargain 60-65" and be done with it.

The 60" Vizio is a really good bargain. Wasn't that long ago you're looking at $1,400 for the same television. I've got a Panasonic, 2 Samsungs, and 2 Vizios. The Panny and Samsungs have slightly better pictures but not by much. Of course I paid a lot more too and have had them for a while. I think you would be amazed and a nice television is worth every penny.

For some folks 3D is a big hangup, but unless you're also going to invest in 3d blu-ray movies I keep with the nice 2d tv, buy a blu-ray player (if you don't already have one) and use anything extra for a home theater in a box or shoot even 2.1 A/V system.

Took the plunge and bought a stand alone no subscription DVR from Wally. Can't believe on what I've been missing out on. First I have never been a fan of this particular brand (Phillips Magnavox) and was a little leery, but the reviews have been outstanding. This unit is one of the very few and possibly only units you can purchase that does not require some type of subscription like a TIVO or your cable company forces upon you.

Anyway for $249.00 you get a 500GB HDD and dvd recorder. The unit will not record programs in Hi Def, but will record up to 10mbs in a very high quality format. Think 480P progressive scan dvd before blu-ray.

Just had to throw that out there because for some of us older folks not completely in touch with everything in technology this is basically a replacement for the old VCRs we use to record on. Once again young guys I posted this for mainly the gray beards in here, but I think even tech savy folks like you would be surprised.

Does it have an OTA tuner or does it have to be fed from whatever you are watching? Or can it do either? Component inputs?

The Mag 533/535/537 (53x) Series is the 8th, and possibly final, generation of simple, family-friendly, durable, std def (SD, 480i) analog/digital DVD recorders (DVDR) with hard disk drive (HDD) that are yearly improvements of the same basic design and operating system.
They're the ONLY recorders, SD or HD (720/1080), available for daily use in North America with:
-NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuners for antenna or cable.
-Easily replaceable hard disk drive (HDD): 320/500/1000GB (1TB).
    -Easily replaceable DVD burner.
    -Widescreen (16:9) recording.
    -Amplified coax and line input.
    -DV input.

    -1080p HDMI upconvert.
    -36 timer-rec programs.
    -6-hour autorecord buffer.

    -Simultaneous play/record.
-Record while watching diff. channel on TV via coax passthru.
-Integrated TV/DVDR control via HDMI CEC-link.

FOR NEWCOMERS TO DVDRs OR THIS BRAND OF DVDR
The 53x Series are standalone units that can record from an antenna or cable TV. They can also record from cable boxes and satellite receivers or copy from DVRs.
They're so easy to use they can be operated by the entire family, from kids to timeshifters to gearheads.
Timeshifters can reliably record a bunch of named shows, unattended and with NO tapes or discs.
Gearheads can upgrade their HDD or create an "HDD farm" of multiple 2.5" and 3.5" external (E-SATA) HDDs with unlimited storage, <1-min. drive swapout, HDD portability, and external power for less internal heat and stress.
The DVD burner is also DIY replaceable with a ~$70 OEM unit.
For the past 5 years, this same HDD/DVD recorder design has proven to be a simple and reliable way to record your daily and weekly shows on analog or digital channels, completely unattended, so you can go on a long vacation or business trip and you'll never touch a disc!
It's the only device you'll need to copy your family's home movies or your DVR recordings to a stand-alone, no-monthly-fee HDD, where you can edit or not, then high-speed dub to DVDs for a perfect mirror-image of the original. You can also record/copy direct to DVD, if you prefer.
If you get your TV signal via OTA antenna, you won't need a digital converter box wherever you've got one of these.
Fair warning: The HDD will spoil you rotten!
