The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    Odd Thoughts about the upcoming 2012/13 Pacers season

    This off season has been a real rollercoaster for me.

    Obviously I was thrilled with last season & I’m not even slightly kidding. We far exceeded any expectations that I had and I thought we upped the time table on the rebuild by about 2 years.

    But after my euphoria wore off I was slapped in the face with the reality that while I didn’t like it, in fact I hated it, but two superstars could beat a team of really good players.

    This of course brought me way down, down to the point of wondering why I even bother watching the NBA because it is such a superstar driven league a team like ours just has no real chance.

    But by draft night I had kind of gotten over it, a little, and like all draft nights I was anxiously awaiting our newest wonder kid who would solve all of our problems.

    My draft night went like this. Anticipation, excitement, bewilderment & disappointment with more bewilderment.

    When Hicks read off the name Miles Plumlee (a good 3 min. before it was announced on TV) the first word out of my mouth was “who”. This then was followed up by several people trying to go online looking to see who this guy was with only Shade having even the foggiest of ideas because of his time watching Duke and his statement to all of us was “he couldn’t even get off of the bench”.

    But understanding that I know nothing about college basketball & I mean nothing, I just hoped for the best with him even though everybody else in the room looked as though we had just watched them put down old yeller.

    I knew though that this was our summer, we had cap space & even though I knew we couldn’t sign a big name free agent (there weren’t really any out there other than Williams & Nash) I thought for sure we could work out a trade with Utah that could send D.C., Tyler & whatever else it took to get one of their abundant front court players (most likely Milsap).

    Then all of a sudden I see that we have signed & traded D.C. & Dahntay Jones for Ian Mahinmi a backup center from Dallas & then we signed D.J. Augustin to a one year deal & Gerald Green to a multi year deal.

    This of course caused me to stew for the remainder of the summer. They kept saying that the bench was improved but I kept remembering that by games 5 & 6 our starters could not contain the Heat. Sure our bench blew but I wanted an upgrade in our starting 5.

    But understanding that we couldn’t do that I then decided to look at what we had gotten & gotten rid of. First & foremost I was a Lou fan, I liked his energy & play I have since he was in Phoenix. He is listed at 6’9” & Ian is listed at 6’11” I just didn’t feel like 2” was very much of a difference and in truth I wanted them to move Hansbrough & keep Lou.

    I then decided that I could not get excited about our new backup point guard who was the starter on the worst team in NBA history and played defense like a cat doing chemistry (in other words not at all) and then there was Mr. YouTube. Yes we all enjoyed his dunks but was I really going to be happy with a player who hadn’t been in the NBA for years over a player (Barbosa) who had been a significant contributor to teams during that time. Yes he stunk in the playoffs, in fact he was a net loss whenever he was on the floor, but he did play well at times during the regular season & all Green had done was put up pretty shots & mild stats on a New Jersey team that had nothing to win or lose.

    Then came pre-season. It took me all of about 4 min. of watching Ian play before I decided that not only was this a good player but this was one hell of a trade and then to make matters worse (or better depending on your point of view) I saw him play side by side vs. Lou. It wasn’t even close. First size wise it’s really obvious that either Lou is actually about 6’7” (hell maybe even 6’6”) & Ian is really closer to 7’. But the offense that he has just came out of nowhere.

    Ok, props here to Pacers4ever for calling out Ian early on. I admit this one right up front, I blew it here. This guy is good enough to be a starting center in the NBA & a legit one at that. Not some scrub who can play spot min. I mean a real legit center & now we have two of them.

    Then Green started to play & not only was he doing breathtaking dunks (they are out of this world good btw) but he also was playing real serious defense as well. Now it’s not outstanding defense but it is more than acceptable.

    So in other words throughout the pre-season my Pacers opinion soared. Forget the Heat I was ready for the Lakers for another go round with them.

    Then came the news that Danny Granger’s knee was hurting him. My euphoria dropped faster than the Hindenburg.

    It’s just a fact of life & we will have to live with it, but if Danny’s knees are an issue all season long my thoughts are that we will still be a good to great team but I doubt how far we can advance if it really truly is an issue. If it’s just minor, no big deal but if he has to miss significant amounts of time I just don’t know.

    Anyway my god that went a lot longer than I wanted it to because I haven’t even gotten to the players yet, so to spare us all time I’m going to do an abbreviated player by player summary.

    Roy Hibbert: Let me tell you all I need to say about Roy and it comes from the Chicago game. Noah had to have double team help on Roy. This was the first time that I can recall him both asking for and getting double team help with Roy in the paint. Why is this important because in the past he has been able to handle Roy one on one and if this is no longer the case than we now have a free hand on the court. Until I see something to prove to me otherwise I will say this. Roy Hibbert is the best center in the East & IMO it’s not even close. This guy has legitimately made himself into a center who deserves floor time. So at one of the most important spots on the floor we start off with an advantage over almost every team that does not have Lakers in their name.

    Danny Granger: As I said this one is going to hurt if he can’t play, but if he can I’ll say I expect at least as good as if not better than last seasons Danny. I pray that he doesn’t get off to the slow start that he normally does but at the very least he can’t get off on that God awful slow start he had last year. What scares me the most though is if his lateral movement is affected by his knee. If it is we are really in trouble because of the next person who I am going to go over.

    David West: I know this is not popular & I know what he brings to the table with leadership, scoring & strength. But if it is possible in the pre-season he seemed even slower & less athletic than he was last year. This will be particularly bad if Danny’s knee is acting up as neither of them are going to be able to rotate down & help Roy whenever a guard penetrates past Augustin (when he’s out there). Look on offense he is perfect next to Roy as he can step out & hit a 15’ shot like a layup but his defense is just scary at times and nauseating at others. Also for as big & tough as he is I sure would like to see him grab some more rebounds than he does.

    Paul George: He tried God love him. They gave him the ball & he tried to score in myriad of ways. Some nights he did other nights he did not but to his credit he always tried. If Danny is down or slowed then he is going to have to step it up on offense, but if not then all I really care about is that he not disappear on the offensive end & try his best to get to the rim. Look it can’t be denied at 6’10” being a shooting guard he has a real chance to be something special. But instead of trying to be a superstar scorer I think his calling is in being a dynamic all around player or as special K used to call them “a stat sheet stuffer”. Some have said he has to have a breakout year & I just laugh. He has all of the tools & he still has a lot of time before he even reaches his prime.

    George Hill: I’m not going to lie. I’m not happy with him taking off the pre-season. I mean injury is one thing but it looks like he could have played those last two games. I really wish he would have played some game time (not practice) so we could have gotten the chemistry worked out in pre-season and not the first game. But I’ll go with the idea that they all played together last year so it may not be a big deal. I just am not comfortable with players who don’t mind sitting out games, even pre-season. But we’ll call it a wash & I really want him on the floor as much as possible.

    Ian Mahinmi: IMO right now the single most significant pickup in the off-season. I said it up above but I’ll say it again differently to emphasize the point. When Roy Hibbert goes to the bench we are replacing him with a player who could easily start & play for a lot of teams in the NBA. Sure we lose some but overall we don’t lose anything because I’m going on record right now and say that he is the best backup center in the entire league. Also, I know I shouldn’t hope for this but I will, he can play the 4 next to Hibbert. Believe me when we’ve seen the plodding cowherd that is Hansbrough & West you will be praying for someone with athletic ability and in the past that has been Danny but now, well now I’m rooting for more Ian. Here you go, you want another bold prediction, if for some reason we actually do advance to where we beat the Heat (no I’m not saying we will) but if we did I will say that Ian will be a major reason why.

    D.J. Augustin: He got better as the pre-season went on. He couldn’t have gotten worse btw because that fist night Jose Barea looked like Skip to my Lou at Rucker Park. But after he managed to actually not be the sieve on defense that I expected every possession I got to watch his entry passes to the post and yes they are as good as we had hoped for. In fact he could raise Roy’s scoring avg. by two baskets a game all by himself if given the chance. But oh God his defense is sketchy. We’ll see how he does vs. backups.

    Gerald Green: I tweeted early on that I suspected that he had hollow bones like a bird or a dinosaur so that he could fly. If nothing else this will give me reason to get to the games early and watch the dunk lines. But I think he is going to be much more than just dunks and three’s. He seems to have something to prove and I like the fact that he has a don’t back down attitude and salutes people after he dunks on them. Sometimes you have to have some flash. But mostly I just hope that he can be a consistent scorer from the bench when we need it. Time will tell but I liked what I saw in pre-season.

    Tyler Hansbrough: Yea, I got nothing. First game I ever saw him play in the NBA looked like the last game I saw him play in pre-season. I will hope for improvement but have just accepted that either the league has him figured out & at best every now and then he will have a game where he gets everything going for him or he is incapable of growing as a player.

    Sam Young: I’m a sucker for hard nosed defenders who play physical. Sadly these players also tend to have no offense & once again this appears to be the case. If Granger goes down though or is limited this may be one of the more under rated pick ups in the off season as he could easily step into the primary backup role and allow either Green or even George to play the starters role.

    Jeff Pendegraph: Better smile every time he cashes that paycheck cause there are probably about 10-20 other players in the D-league & Europe who could easily take his spot. Sorry gang but after watching him closely all pre-season he is what he is. Which means I think he has hit the top of his ladder. Hey every team needs an energy guy and as long as he is content in his role then more power to him, he does do a mean pre-game warm up scream.

    Lance Stephenson: No this isn’t his last chance in the NBA. Yes it would be nice if he did somehow show that he deserved time on the floor but he’s too young and talented to say if he doesn’t somehow break out this year he is out of the league for good. Now having said that I will say he was disappointing in the pre-season and frankly right now I think they have him over thinking the game and slowing it down way to much because right now he looks like he is going in slow motion when he is on the floor. I realize that this is a conscious effort by the club to get him to stop rushing but it looks like they are going to have to tweak that some as he now appears to have shifted to far the other way.

    Miles Plumlee, Orlando Johnson & Ben Hansbrough. I look forward to reading about their mad ant’s adventures & look forward to the day they come to us ready to contribute. I am truly excited that the club is using the D-league this year & I hope each player benefits from it.

    Now here is the tricky part. This is the year we really get to see how good Frank Vogel is as a coach. We know he is a master motivator but how good is he going to be at drawing up plays and adjusting to an entire season. He’s had a training camp and now a full pre-season, so how good is he going to be. One could watch that Bulls game and see early on that the Bulls even without Rose & Heinrich were running plays that got them shots at the rim while we struggled to get into our offense early on. But as the game progressed the tide turned a little bit on that. The Bulls had some of their shots that were dropping stop going in while the Pacers started to run off plays to get to the rim.

    I believe in Frank so once again I think he is the most important person on the team and we go as far as Frank’s ability to adjust gets us.

    Overall I am very optimistic going into the season and I’m not even talking about my normal “I hope everything goes well this year” optimism I have every year to start the year (yes even under Satan). But this year I actually don’t look for them to just have a good year. This year I think they contend.

    Contending means E.C. finals and frankly anything less is a disappointment. A first round exit barring significant injury would be devastating & not making the playoffs is just not something I can even comprehend right now.

    My how we have come a long way in just two short years.

            I think plumlee was a safe pick. But will be pisses if he gets sent to the DLeague. He is a first round pick. What a waste, especially when pj3 was available. He is already looking great for the thunder. Im not sure what the pacers were thinking seeing how Dwest will be looking another big contract...will we afford to keep him. Would have been nice to have a dynamic 4 who slide over and play the 3 like PJ3

              Complete speculation here, but it could be that the Pacers were one of the several teams who had pulled Jones completely off their boards. The reports during and after the draft suggested that the doctors for some teams felt like he could only hold up so long before inevitably breaking down. Even if he plays well this year, that doesn't invalidate those concerns yet. The question could become though if he was valuable enough to this squad to risk him only playing 2-3 years.

                It's a little weird to me that if Vogel and the Pacers have a less than stellar season the guy I'd like to see replace him is already on our bench...

                  I agree with most of it.

                  I have hope that Lance will be the player that most of us know that he can become. I even have my doubts that it'll happen. Even still, I think he'll be back next year. And why not, his contract is cheap. But after that he may end up floating around China or the DLeague working on this game much like Green before he has a come back. I really hope that doesn't happen, cause I want him to put it together in a Pacer uni.
                  First time in a long time, I've been happy with the team that was constructed, and now they struggle. I blame the coach.

                    One thought: given our depth at wing and obtaining Young and Green, continuing to prop up Lance, and generously paying Hill . . . I wonder if TPTB have known about Granger's knee concerns for a while now.

                        There was rumor that many of the scouts used the words 'Tim Thomas' to describe Jones in their write-ups of him. Add that to his knee issues, and it's not surprising that some teams down graded him. Also, isn't the Thunder using him as a SF? That means either he is big and skilled or unable to play the 4. If Jones is a tweener, then he got picked about where he deserved to be picked.

                        I liked him coming out of high school. Be interesting to see how he works out in OKC.

                          They know about Danny's knee issues since draft day, Danny has been having issues with that knee forever, remember the time he wasn't able to practice with team USA because his knee was bothering him like 3 years ago? remember the time his knee was bothering him and the clown of JOB decided to play him at the end of the season so they could move out of the lottery?

                          By the way Vogel was interviewed yesterday and he pretty much said that Danny's knee is going to hurt for the rest of his career, he said that they are going to try to minimize his minutes so his knee doesn't hurt that much, it looks like they are going to monitor his minutes.
