I understand why it is time, but he's done a great job for the NBA over the years. He'll go down IMo as the second best pro sports commissioner behind Pete Rozelle.

Anyone who is old enough to have followed the NBA prior to Stern being the comissioner I think has to admit he's done on whole a great job

His nurturing of superstars did help build up the NBA over the years. But I think as of late its been a hindrance to the overall profitability of the league. Something I think even stern has begun to realize.

His true lasting legacy won't be known for years.

While good things were done at times, especially early on in his tenure, I cannot thank this thread enough. He had gone the way of Polian for the Colts --- making bad decisions and needed to take leave.
There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

I wish he had retired after the Donaghy scandal (and he should have).

I wonder why February 1? That is mid season, that seems odd to me.

Because it will mark EXACTLY a 30 year tenure. Stern took office Feb 1 1984.

It's definitely necessary. A change has been very much needed.

I'm guessing Adam Silver, who I believe would manage the league fairly and maintain parity, to be Stern's successor.

Based on his interviews, he seems to have a much different approach and mindset than Stern does.

Stern to retire in 2014; Silver likely to replace him

    Posted Oct 25, 2012 1:54 PM - Updated Oct 25, 2012 2:27 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- NBA Commissioner David Stern will retire on Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years after he took charge of the league. He will be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.
The announcement came at an NBA Board of Governors meeting Thursday.
Stern told owners during their two days of meetings of his plans, and the board unanimously decided Silver would be his successor.
Stern, who turned 70 last month, became commissioner on Feb. 1, 1984. He has been the NBA's longest-serving commissioner, establishing the league's brand around the world, presiding over team expansion and overseeing the establishment of the WNBA.
"You'll be remembered as the best of all-time," Silver told Stern, sitting to his left on a podium during a news conference.
Stern said he decided on his plans about six months ago, having guided the league through a lockout that ended nearly a year ago. He said the league is in great shape and he is confident in Silver, who has been the league's No. 2 since 2006.
"I don't know what else to say other than to recite what I told the owners yesterday in executive session," Stern said. "I told them that it's been a great run, it will continue for another 15 months, that the league is in, I think, terrific condition."

I am glad I am too young to have known that commissioner, because it would pain me even more to have watched the last decade and half of his reign.

Adam Silver was groomed by David Stern. It will be interesting to see how things will change over Silver's tenure.
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

I do wonder if Stern has properly indoctrinated Silver on how to fix games. We wouldn't want the "wrong teams" in the NBA Finals now would we.

so he has 30 years of service he started 30 years ago on that exact day.

People saying a change was needed are LOL. Stern was a great commish and the game is in great shape and along with others really propelled the NBA from a joke of a league to a successful empire. Really I cant think of anything he has done that warrants bashing at all.
