I'm really just looking forward to the Lakers wallowing in despair for at least a few seasons. It was great when the Knicks were terrible and dysfunctional, and maybe Isiah Thomas can get a gig in LA's front office somewhere? Stern will probably force us to send Paul George to the Lakers as his final F-U to Indiana on his way out the door.

23 3-pointers for the Rockets, in 40 attempts, made by 9 different players!

The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

Ohio rejecting some LeBron James hater license plates

Some fans in Ohio are still pretty pissed at LeBron James for leaving for South Beach.

But you can’t put that on your car. Apparently.

The Dayton Daily News in Ohio looked at personalized license plates rejected by the state‘s Bureau of Motor Vehicles and found some LeBron James hate did not make the cut. (Be warned: if you are easily offended do not click that link, some of the non-LeBron ones got rejected for pretty obvious reasons.) Thanks to Rob Mahoney at Sports Illustrated for finding this.

    Among the LeBron ones were:

    • IH8LBJ
    • LBJSUCK
    • LBJSUX.

My question: Is that really so offensive as to get rejected? I could think of some four-letter phrases with LBJ tacked on that would and should get rejected. But if you hate LeBron James is that going to offend people or lead to fights or something?

Or, maybe Ohio just wants to protect the legacy of Texas Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson. Say he sucks and those are fightin’ words.

I think that the Rockets are still sinking 3pt shots in Houston....

    Sheridan: Al Jefferson to Spurs?

    By Chris Sheridan
    February 06, 2013 at 2:00 PM

The NBA trade deadline journalism racket is a tricky minefield to navigate. The business is driven by rumors, many of which are founded in truth; others of which are utterly fictitious.

Distinguishing between the two differentiates the good basketball Web sites from the bad sites.

But figuring out who is available is not rocket science if you speak to the right people, and I speak to a lot of plugged-in people on a regular basis.

Here is the latest they are telling me: The San Antonio Spurs are the front-runners to land Al Jefferson in a trade with the Utah Jazz — and they are frontrunners like Secretariat was in the 1973 Belmont Stakes.

Here’s why, followed by a how.

“Those teams are practically incestuous, they are on such good terms internally,” one NBA source told me Wednesday.

Indeed, Spurs assistant general manager Scott Layden left Utah prior to this season after spending several seasons as an assistant coach for the Jazz and joined R.C. Buford’s staff in San Antonio’s secrecy vault front office. Also, former Spurs assistant GM Dennis Lindsey is now doing the legwork for Utah’s grand poohbah, Kevin O’Connor.

The Jazz do not want to lose Jefferson for nothing when he becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and they have a former overall No. 1 pick, Enes Kanter, ready to step in and fill the void that would be left by Jefferson’s departure.

Yes, Jefferson makes them a better playoff team. But no, the Jazz are not fooling themselves into believing they are championship material at this point.

And if Dwight Howard is not available on the free agent market this summer, Jefferson immediately becomes the No. 1 center available.

So the time for the Jazz to move him is NOW, and the team with the biggest need for an upgrade at center is the Spurs, whose inability to protect the rim was one of the prime reasons for their collapse in last year’s Western Conference finals when they had won 20 in a row and had a 2-0 lead on the Thunder, only to lose the next four.

Next: The Jazz need a point guard, and the Spurs have two of them not named Tony Parker. So you can expect Patty Mills (who Lindsey is familiar with and fond of) to be the preferable choice over Nando de Colo.

The Jazz also need some value coming back in this trade, and the Spurs have one last Eurostash asset in Erazem Lorbek, who has been profiled on this site by writer A.J. Mitnick.

Presumably they’d also ask for Tiago Splitter, because somebody would need to back up Kanter, and because Splitter is having an improved season in the year his contract expires — meaning Utah would not be taking on any long-term financial obligation.

San Antonio throws in Stephen Jackson for salary-matching purposes (almost an exact match), and voila.
Pat Mills + Splitter + expiring + sweetener (Lorbek)
I don't know if that's legit but seems pretty good for both sides.

PS: Sheridan sounds pretty cocky (the part in bold at the start).

Which 2012 All-Star has been the biggest disappointment this season?

    Deron Williams 12k
    Roy Hibbert 6k
    Andre Iguodala 2k
    Steve Nash 5k

Hibbert has been a tremendous defensive anchor this season. He's not producing like a dominant center, but he's leading like one.

He doesn't belong on that list, honestly.

It reminds me a bit of when Jeff Van Gundy said in 2004 he wouldn't even want Ben Wallace on his team because he's not enough of an offensive threat.

Hibbert was very highly regarded among non-Pacers fans last year, in my experience. I had multiple chats with non-fans over the summer and I was surprised by how highly they thought of Hibbert. Definitely much higher than I did and than most of this board did.
I mean, I was in favor of matching and keeping Hibbert but I never considered him a top 3 center or such. A lot of non-Pacers fans did, in my experience.

I think those block parties in the playoffs + his advanced stats (which were insanely good last year, especially synergy) led to people having distorted perception. Which makes their disappointment so much bigger. To me, he hasn't been THAT disappointing. Underwhelming, sure, especially to start the season. But he's a major part of the league best defense. But those who thought of him as an almost a superstar, it has to be very disappointing.

There was a moment where Roy dove on the floor last night for a ball, and I was thinking to myself how many other max centers would do that in the league, Noah, Chandler, Roy, is that the list? Roy is definitely setting a tone defensively, every loose ball should be ours.

if we are looking strictly at "max", then Roy is the only one on that list...

FYI, the Toronto broadcast team has declared Rudy gay 3rd best SF in the east, specifically mentioning Paul George as a guy that isn't in his level yet.

We've already had a Julius Erving comparison, but with Marques Johnson's defense. Because just comparing him to Dr. j is, quite frankly, and insult to Rudy gay.

Knicks live and die by the three. That is why they are going no where in the playoffs. Shooting 32% which is pretty average and a loss in Washington.
