Thread: 2012-13 NBA Random Thoughts Thread IX: Ode to Joy

I remember Olajuwon always fasting mid-season and having a tough stretch of games.

    Er, maybe not.

    http://www.thedreamshake.com/2009/9/...akeem-olajuwon

"At the beginning of my career, when my team-mates heard I was fasting during the season they thought it would affect my game and were concerned," explains the 12-time All-Star. "But when they saw that it actually made me better there was a lot of admiration and intrigue: 'How can you play at this level without drinking water, when you must need water and must be thirsty' they would ask."

Crazy that the luxury tax is driving Memphis breaking up a legit contender. But they had to know this day was coming when they signed gay to that absurd contract.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

The Wizards would be dumb to give up Beal for Gay.

They're stuck in mud at the moment, and may not feel like waiting for beal to develop.

I think that sticking with Beal makes sense because he has more upside than Gay, is a nice fit next to John Wall, is on a cheap rookie deal, and it looks like he's figuring it out now (has averaged 18/4/3 in January). It would be a monumental mistake IMO for the Wiz to include Beal in a package for Gay.

Gay, I think would be a good fit with John Wall. They both want to play the same way. Rudy's having a tough season, but previously had been a very good player.

It'd be ashamed to give up Beal though. Particularly when Washington isn't exactly in "win now" mode.. even if Beal never reaches Gay's level he's a very cheap (currently) and seems like he's going to be a very good player, that will fit in well with Wall.

If they can get Gay without Beal though, I'm sure Wall, Beal, Gay would be a fun team to watch on the perimeter.

I'm not big on Rudy Gay, I just don't think he's a franchise guy in any way. I'd rather have PG or a healthy Granger, honestly.

To me the Wizards getting Rudy Gay would be like history repeating itself from when they signed Antawn Jamison. I don't see it as moving them much forward and at the cost of Beal? No thanks.

Especially when Beal looks like the real deal to me, he just needs time.

If I'm Washington, I have to get Conley if I'm letting Beal go, and you have an issue with Wall now.

    Ultimately, Washington wants to go:

    1-Wall
    2-Beal
    3-??
    4-Seraphin/Vesely
    5-Nene/Vesely

If you get Rudy, you're now creating a problem at the 2.

They have to look at improving their team, and to do that they need to get their future starter at the 3, as well as hope that Vesely will dramatically improve into the player they thought they were getting. Seraphin has been a nice surprise, but offset by Ariza being a borderline disaster.

Like somebody already said, a deal were Rudy goes to Washington and Beal goes to Memphis makes no sense for Memphis, they are in win now mode why get a future piece? maybe they want Ariza+Okafor+Beal? I have no idea how much money can Memphis save by doing this.

After trading for Okafor+Ariza and signing Nene to that contract.....they are "All in" at this point...as in committed to multiple large contracts that will limit what they can do. If they are able to get Gay for Beal+Multiple 1st+some other prospect.....it makes sense.

That would be an extremely awful move. That's fine if you want to take a win-now approach and make moves like acquiring Gay, but forking over assets like Beal and multiple 1sts isn't something you do to make that happen. Gay doesn't have that kind of value.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ed-to-memphis/

Wizards rookie guard Bradley Beal has not been mentioned in trade discussions with the Memphis Grizzlies involving swingman Rudy Gay, according to Beal’s agent, Mark Bartelstein.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reported Monday that the Grizzlies have “entertained” an offer from the Wizards that would include Beal in a larger package.”I’ve talked to both teams. There is absolutely nothing to it,” Bartelstein said.
“The Wizards have made it very clear that they are not moving Brad Beal.”
Multiple league sources confirm that the Wizards have spoken with Memphis about prying away Gay, the team’s leading scorer, with one adding that Washington is “pushing for” his services. That push, however, does not include Beal, the third overall pick of the 2012 draft.
A source with knowledge of the Wizards’ thinking called the report of the team offering Beal, “100 percent not true.”

Awful move as in trading for Gay?

    or

Awful move as in paying too much for Gay but Okay move to simply make a run at Gay?

At the very least....Gay would fetch a 1st+Prospect ( Beal ) + Expiring type of deal. Some Team that REALLY wants Gay...a borderline All-Star ( a la Granger ) type Scoring Forward....will offer that as a starting point.

You are right....multiple 1st and and additional assets outside of Beal maybe overpaying...but this is the Wizards that we are talking about.

To me...making a run at Gay makes sense. The Wizards ( just like any other young Team that has been in Lottery Heck for the last couple of years.....with a young solid up and coming PG and committed $$$ to a Big Man like Nene and Okafor ) at some point has to stop gambling on the Draft and start committing to making the Playoffs by making moves like this.

Giving up a likely stud SG in Beal, and then throwing in 1st rounders to boot. If they want Gay, fine, but they shouldn't overpay for him. Something like Okafor+Vesely+future 1st is the most the Wizards should offer, and is more in line with Gay's trade value.
