Michael Vick a dog owner again

PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Vick is a dog owner again.

Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges, confirmed Thursday that his family has a dog. The Philadelphia Eagles' four-time Pro Bowl quarterback refused to discuss the topic just a day earlier.

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," Vick said in a statement. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."

Since his release from prison in 2009, Vick has worked with The Humane Society of the United States to speak out against animal cruelty. He's made appearances at schools and spoken to students about the dangers of being involved in dogfighting. Vick says that commitment will continue.

"This is an opportunity to break the cycle," Vick said. "To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change."

The Humane Society declined to comment.

Vick was banned from owning a dog until completing his probation period. When he first stated his desire to own one, it touched off a firestorm. Some animal-rights activists were outraged along with fans who thought the star player should never be allowed to have a dog.

"I'm not a psychopath. I'm not crazy. I'm a human being," Vick once told The Associated Press about wanting to own a dog. "What happened in my past and what I did in the culture I grew up in doesn't shape and mold me as the person I am now."

Good story. Everyone deserves a second chance. Of course, if the dog bites him I doubt I'll shed a tear.

If felons who committed gun crimes can own guns after they have been released from jail then Vick should be allowed to own a dog.

I am glad to hear it. I think it is cool that Vick got the second chance and seems to actually be making good. You have to wonder if there was any control on what kind of dog he could own though.

I can't help but think he had to take some sort of training program to prove he can own a dog.

That being said the dog is really safe with Vick as ironic as that sounds

I mean think about it if the dog so much has a boo boo people are going to look to Vick he can't make a misstep at this point

Good for him. What he did was disgusting and abominable but it involved a lot more than "OMG this guy hates dogs!" Funny that a lot of the people that're so against Vick hit up fast food joints twice a week.

So munching on a Big Mac is the moral equivalent of drowning dogs?

I think what he's getting at is that the US slaughters 24 million cattle a year and morally we feel ok with that since we are removed from the process. OF course dog fighting has no practical value and is far worse but I would argue eating fast food on a reguarly basis has no practical value outside of poor health and lower life expectancy.

I'm sorry, but comparing eating cows to, hanging, drowning, shooting, abusing dogs is ridiculous.

We are talking about an animal that has been breed for centuries especially for eating, compared to a dog that has been breed for centuries to be a companion or help/work with us. Of course even cows should be humanely put down.

With all due respect, maybe you should go watch how cows are killed to make your food. It's completely disgusting.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

It's not dog versus cow thing. Look into the practices places like McDonalds use to get their meat, it's not all that dissimilar to what Vick did.

Abuses are the exception in the meat industry. Yes, the animals are killed for food, but they are not tortured for sport or enjoyment as a matter of course.

Comparing McDonalds to what Michael Vick did is ridiculous.

this whole thread is a non-issue.

Who cares if Vick owns a dog. It's a story if he starts abusing the dog.
