Does Sunday Ticket have local lockouts like NBA League Pass?

The best thing DirecTV did for itself was offer "free installation" of their product. More often than not the "Do it your-selfer" would not take the time and effort to install the dish correctly or just stop as soon as they got any signal and not fine tune that puppy into the high 90% range. Back in the 90's when they charged a boat load for installation I put up my own dish and never got the results of having them "professionally" installed when it came to rain. Right now it takes a pretty massive storm to cut my DirecTV service... The same storms that would make my old comcast cable block up and be pretty much unwatchable. (That being the reason I gave up on Comcast along with the price)

Don't be so realistic. There are people who know more about the subject than those with real life testamonials and people with 13 years of satellite communications experience.
The friend I referenced above had it professionally done. Perhaps it was just a fluke, but once it started pouring the screen went blank..........

Yes. If the Colts get blacked out this year (and it sure sounds like it will happen), and you live in the local market, you can't watch the Colts. Not even if you have Sunday Ticket. Not even if you go to a bar to watch it. The best you can hope for is to watch the action periodically on RedZone.

If I was more inclined I'd do some research.... but I'm kinda lazy right now
But there are two factors that might need to be considered.

#1 is the quality of the installer. If he doesn't care much more than the homeowner who stops as soon as he gets signal without tweaking it to find the max signal then results won't be maximized (obviously). This is true for no matter where you are located. Your installation is only as good as your installer. Even the good ones sometimes get in a hurry.

#2 is the one I'd need to research somewhat. That is the subject of 'footprint'. The satellites have a 'footprint' they are beaming to. Obviously if you're smack dab in the sweet spot of that footprint, and with a maximized dish install, then your results should be very favorable. What I don't know is where are the edges of the footprint and how much weaker the signal is as it radiates away from the sweetspot? I'd 'think' even if Florida was at the edge of the footprint that's its position being closer to the satellite would negate some of the potential signal attenuation issues of the aiming of the footprint to center the signal. But there again, maybe in trying to increase the footprint to the northern US borders they've compromised the satellite proximity gain in Florida to focus the footprint for farther north reaches? So I just don't know... IOW Maybe here in the central US we have something close to the maximum signal to deal with, and if we tweak our dishes appropriately, and if we have an unobstructed view of the satellites then maybe we can all but eliminate rain fade. But maybe some of you in a different part of the footprint don't have the same amount of signal we do here....

That is either a research question... or a question for a knowledgeable installer.

A 3rd point... and one I've not looked at for years.... It used to be that you could get larger aftermarket dishes for better gain. Not talking big C band dishes here... just something bigger than the factory offerings of Dish or Directv. Now that the dishes are oblong and aiming for multiple satellites at once I don't know that anyone is still in this market like they once were. At one time the larger dishes had multiple uses so it made some sense to also market to people (directv and dish subscribers) that needed/wanted the extra gain of a larger dish (like you might want on the fringe of the footprint, if you couldn't accept rain fade ever, or in an area that had some slight obstructions blocking line of sight to the satellites and limiting reception strength). Not sure anyone makes a specific aftermarket Dish or Directv now. These weren't something that you'd get from your standard Directv or DISH installer. They might not even know about these. These would be from places that sell to broadcasters and/or the hobbyist market.

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

A year ago I went to watch a UFC fight in Westfield where a friend had DirecTV, and he had to just call and ask for a refund.

It was unwatchable, because of a fairly normal, run of the mill storm. It wasn't some epic storm. A group of friends and I grilled that day, and had all the food setup and were getting ready for the event to start, and the storm ruined it.

You guys can claim it's 'been fixed', or 'not that bad' all you want, but nothing is going to trump my real life experience.
The dish may not be mounted very well or may be a couple of degrees off. From what I understand, most likely this problem is the receiving dish not the signal. Have they had anyone come out to check the alignment? I'm not sure DirecTV deserves the blame for everything they get blamed for.

But as Travmil said, this was their idea and they sold it to the league with the idea that, even though the technology is simple the teams needed to be paid for their broadcast rights. Its the league/ teams that own those that CBS/ Fox pay their own license for. Can't really blame them for wrapping an exclusive clause around it.

Yes. If the Steelers are on Channel 2 (WBBM) this weekend vs. the Jets at 3pm, then I watch that game on Channel 2, not the Sunday Ticket channel.

It works differently than the NBA LP blackouts.

You're right. Nothing can trump your real life experience. Which is why this is weird to me. Because i've had Direct Tv for 2 years and the only time it's gone out is when the entire power went out. Other than that, i've never had any of these issues. Also, if you're put off by one bad experience, well...you probably miss out on a lot of good things. DirectTV is one of them. I have real life experience. I know

As for Sunday Ticket. I also have it. I love it. I have one small issue. When i want to watch the Colts game on full screen, i have to go to the local channel, which defeats the purpous of navigating 8 games at a time on the GameMix. But other than that small issue. I love it. Nothing gets blacked out. I see every game. I can track my fantasy teams as long as it's pre set to the players i want before the games starts ( which is tedious, unless you're me and you like to begin your pregame drink session while doing it ).

A small issue with Direct TV that i have, is that it's slow. Switching to one channel to another takes like 3-5 seconds. It seems silly to ***** about, but the entire system is like this. To pull up the guide, or info, or your dvr programs, theres like a slow reaction speed. It's rather annoying, but i manage because i like the product.

I would imagine that those who have issues with the satelite during storms, probably have a poorly installed satelite, or a satelite that needs to be reinstalled because it's been through a few storms.

Honestly, if you get satelite dish, you have to get up there and give it some care once a year. Tighten some screws. Make sure it's not been loosened by storms. Sure you might not have this kind of maintenance with Comcast of whatever Fios might be. Just like you wouldnt have maintenance on a car every year if you ride the bus everyday.

Further, and this is what I dislike about it...

The Steelers game kicked off at 3:25. Had I been able to tune into channel 71x, I would have seen the whole game.

But the local CBS affililate (WBBM) was still showing the end of the Ravens-Eagles game. As they should have, because they shouldn't cut away from a game in progress. At least it was an AFC North game, so I sorta cared about the outcome. By the time that game ended, and they switched over to the Steelers game on the national feed, it was already 7-3 Jets. So I missed the Jets only useful offensive series as the Steelers outscored them 24-3 the rest of the way.

But I didn't want to watch the Ravens. As I've done since 1995, I paid for Sunday Ticket to watch the Steelers and so far this year I haven't watched a single minute of Sunday Ticket (as they've had two national tv broadcasts already.) And because of the blackout, I couldn't watch the portion - the first half hour - that should have been on Sunday Ticket. Grumble.
