You let players make money by being good players. It's the easiest and most realistic step. I've yet to hear/read a good reason why a college player shouldn't be able to endorse a product. Coaches do it, programs do it, why can't the players? Nobody has a problem with Tom Crean shooting Subway commercials, why can't Cody Zeller?

I couldn't agree with you more.

I work in Bloomington, but live between Franklin and Greenwood. Every day on my drive home I saw a big IU billboard featuring Cody Zeller dunking promoting Indiana basketball. And every time I went grocery shopping at Meijer I saw an IU #4 (Oladipo) jersey. If I were Cody Zeller's or Victor Oladipo's parents, I'd sue Indiana University. Because I'm guessing they didn't sign any waiver allowing the school to promote without them receiving any financial benefit.

I'd also pay the FBS football and Division 1 men's basketball scholarship athletes minimum wage for 20 hours a week during their regular seasons.

I'm quite sure they did sign a waiver allowing the school to promote without them receiving any financial benefits beyond a free education, because it is in the fine print of their scholarship offer, which they sign and it is in fact a contract
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

I thnk that's right, actually. I believe I read that in the Ed O'Bannon case, which is how the NCAA may get off scot-free, because a naive 17 or 18 year old kid didn't read the fine print, which is awesome.

Then the answer is to have lawyers educate these kids and their parents on what's in the letter of intent, and tell them not to sign it unless that's taken out. Like you said, it's a contract, so there's no issues getting lawyers involved. All it would take is a few schools to take that out, and then the floodgates would open.

No it isn't. Posting in a thread of a team you do not like and calling their team overrated is trolling.

Perhaps I'll go trash Kellen Dunham on the Butler thread. I'm sure you'll have no problem with that.

Dude, stop. BWD comes in here with legitimate discussion. He has opinions that differ from ours. That doesn't make him a troll or an IU hater or anything else.

"Legitimate" discussion that just so happens to be resoundingly negative. I'm sure he'd have no problem with me going onto the Butler thread and downplaying their players' ability.

Honestly, I don't think he would care one iota if you did that. Go back and read his other posts in this thread. Very level headed, and often praising IU. At the very worst, he isn't OlBlu, who is appears has either been banned or left on his own accord.

I'd honestly prefer it. Gives us more things to discuss.

I root for IU anytime they aren't playing Butler or Purdue. And I don't even root against them when they play Purdue. I grew up sleeping undeneath an IU comforter with Hoosier wallpaper in my childhood bedroom. I, unfortunately, picked the 2013 team to win the national title. Hell, I all but said I'd bet my mortgage on IU destroying Syracuse. But I guess not having an avatar with their logo makes me an Indiana hating troll.

Most of your Pacers-related posts have been negative lately (and you make some good points btw). Thus, I don't understand why you get so bent-out-of-shape when someone posts something remotely negative about IU. Brush saying that they might not be in the top 25 is hardly some earth-shattering prediction. It's not like he's saying they won't make the tournament for the next five seasons. As he says, he predicted IU would demolish Syracuse, whereas many IU fans here were nervous before the game. The idea that a fan of another team can't post their honest thoughts about the team in a respectful manner is ridiculous.

It all comes down to that jumpshot IMO. Is it permanently broken or will he figure it out? I love Yogi's moxi and his ball handling. I think he will be a great 4 year leader at IU and has the chance to leave as one of the winningest players in program history

Twitter tells me Sheehey's transferring to USC. Nevermind that that makes zero sense and it's pretty much completely confined to Purdue fans, not even actual sources, but hey, DONE DEAL!
Yeah the whole team is transferring if you listen to twitter.

Never understood why they can't do this to be honest. Plenty of time during the offseason, I know it creates some conflicts with the possibility of kids "missing class" or whatever, but surely they could figure out a way to handle this kind of like recruiting periods.

I'm pretty sure the school is allowed to use your likeness while you're an athlete...but there are so many asinine rules I can't keep up with them all. I know a third party like a video game producer cannot.

You can use their likeness on a billboard. You cannot sell their likeness on merchandise, which is why you cant buy college basketball jerseys with names on the back.

The way things have been going for the NCAA lately with their enforcement cases, don't be surprised if they somehow screw up a chance to get off scot-free....
