In a lot of other ways, besides history, UCLA is one of the worst places in any major conference to coach basketball. No practice facility, subpar training facilities, run-down playing facilities, administration that has been de-emphasizing athletics, bankrupt state support, disinterested fan base. IU has none of that to deal with.

Plus who wants to go to a place where the previous coach was fired just five years after making three straight Final Fours (including the championship game)?

Lavin also had decent success there, but was fired after one losing season.

Apparently, Indiana is looking at a 2013 point guard. Which is interesting because we are already oversigned by 3. Looks like we will be doing some housecreaning this spring. Zeller, Oladipo go pro. Hulls, Watford, Elston graduated. Jurkin and player X get Creaned. My best guess is Maurice Creek.
That's one of the funniest sentences I've ever read on here.

I don't even liked the whole Creaned/Creaning thing, but even I got a chuckle out of housecreaning.

I only ask this because I saw Peter Jurkin play in high school and have moderately followed him for a few years, but why did he not get more time? I get Zeller was there, and he would obviously get the lions share of minutes at center, but were the other frontcourt guys that much better as to where he couldn't help at all?
He has been hurt quite a bit with leg injuries in high school and the latter part of the year at IU. Being suspended those first 9 games really hurt him too. He and Perea desperately needed the game experience and would have been useful in the early season curbstomping we did of those overmatched low major teams.

Creek leaving this season doesn't seem a surprise at all, he is a Dad now and probably needs to start getting income. I will have to check out on Peegs, which 2013 PG are we talking about? wonder if that means we are not feeling so hot about Jaquan Lyle next year. Recruiting season is always fun and exciting, but this season it is also a reminder of a season ending too soon, hopefully a year or two from now we can look back on this season as a learning experience of what it means to be the hunted every single game.

OK so the 13 PG is Sina, who originally committed verbally to Bama then to Northwestern, but was released when Carmody was fired. He is ranked 119th in the 13 class so he is not a terrible pickup this late in the game if it happens, but it makes more sense when you see what high school he goes to, he is teammates with Tyus Battle who is a big time 2016 SG/SF recruit.

Some kid named Jaren Sina. 3-star, ranked 119th in the 2013 class. Was committed to Northwestern, then they fired Carmody, and he reopened things.

I'm not sure how much it says or doesn't say about Lyle. I have long since thought we weren't going to get him. I think Dante Exum is a better possibility, honestly. Both of them are more combo guards than true points. I think we are just a little concerned about outside shooting (Sina is supposedly a pretty good shooter) and the lack of ball handling if Yogi gets in foul trouble or gets hurt. Anyone really want to see Remy Abell bringing the ball up the court for an extended period of time?

Sina sounds like he is more ballhandler than shooter, but I think the real play here is for Battle in 2016. That being said Sina sounds like he could be an interesting guy for us if he is a really good passer like his write up says. He doesn't sound like a bad shooter either.

As far as Remy, I am like you, I think he gets moved off the ball even more next year which is why Crean had him being so aggressive this season at times. Of course Remy could get passed over in the rotation too if a guy like Troy Williams comes in and plays as well as he might be capable of.

What are your guys' expectations for next season in three different scenarios, all three assume that Vonleh is an impact freshman right away and that one of Williams or Stanford Robinson also impacts right away (they are doing something like this on Peegs so thought I'd bring it here too):

1.) Cody and Victor both go pro

2.) Cody or Victor stays, but the other goes.

3.) Cody and Victor both stay (yeah, yeah I already know this probably isn't going to happen, but just want to compare to other two scenarios)

I'll post my thoughts later this afternoon.

Piggybacking off of Peegs' column are we?

    1) 22-24 wins middle of the pack B1G
    2) Cody stays: 25+ wins B1G title contenders; Victor stays: 24-26 wins top 4 B1G
    3) Preseason #1 or #2; national title contenders; better record than this year; several pissed off current/future players who get Creaned

BTW, if Zeller goes pro, I would expect Etherington to go somewhere else.

On the contrary, I'd be shocked if they stayed. Zeller wouldn't totally shock me, but I'd be pretty surprised.

The injury in the Louisville game yesterday might make their decision a little easier. I hope both come back but I doubt it. Wish I could be a fly on the wall to hear Crean's advice to them. Crean said he was going to do research to give them the best possible advice. LOL

If they do come back, it damn sure better be in spite of Crean's advice and not in part because of it.

Nobody settles for IU. Duke has worse facilities and was absolutely nothing until Coach K arrived. IU basketball transcends any one coach. Duke wins more, but IU has a far more complete program. Stevens wouldn't have to change much of what he does if he were to coach at IU.
    This is laughable.

How ever will I dispute this, what with the detailed evidence you provided to the contrary.

IU has a MUCH larger fanbase, a stadium that seats almost 2X as many people, is located in a state that produces more per capita elite talent than almost any place in the country, and has a state of the art practice facility. I clearly stated that Duke has the obvious advantage in on court success but the numerous factors I mentioned mean a good coach can step in and have immediate significant success at IU and sustain it for a long period of time.

Feel free to contradict any of this. I won't hold my breath.

Crean is going to give them straightforward advice based on input from NBA scouts and the Draft Advisory Board. He clearly anticipated early departures due to the size of the 2013 recruiting class.

They will be conveniently ushered out of the program. On their own accord, of course.
It's no different than what Groce just did to three players at Illinois, Calipari did to Harrow at UK, or Purdue fans want Painter to do.

If both Zeller and Oladipo go pro, which I expect will occur, then 2013-14 will be a definite rebuilding year and the wins won't come easy. I certainly don't expect a Purdue type year with a losing record but a 21-22 win season and an 8-11 seed in the NCAA tournament is what I predict will occur. If the 2012 class improves (cough Hollowell Hanner cough) and the 2013 class can contribute immediately IU could be a lot better and win 25+ games.

I count on a big leap from Yogi, Vonleh to be as advertised, and progress from Hollowell. Crean will (wisely, in this case) load the schedule up with cupcakes which should get everyone comfortable with their roles. I think there's enough talent to surprise people, and I have a ton of faith in Ferrell. I don't expect much from Hanner. Anything he gives us besides "aimlessly wandering around the court and never catching the ball" is a plus. Remy will be key. Robinson and Williams will need to give us something right out of the gate too.

Groce isn't forcing guys out at Illinois, far as I know anyway, it's just the usual turnover when a new coach comes in with a new system.

And even though I may say things in the heat of the moment or jokingly I don't want anyone to leave Purdue. If the player wants out don't let the door hit you, but I absolutely hate yanking a scholarship out from under a kid just because he's not as good at basketball as you hoped he'd be. Get better at scouting, not at upheaving a kid's life.
