We were certainly in jeopardy of the program going into a severe tailspin after the Sampson fiasco. If we would have made another poor hire that turned out bad or couldn't recruit, then God knows where we'd be now. But Crean was an excellent hire who knew how to sell Indiana basketball, particularly to the excellent high school talent from the state. That led to the program becoming a monster again just a few years after the Sampson fiasco.
I'm not trying to mitigate the seriousness of the Sampson situation. There's no doubt we basically hit rock bottom in 2008. More than anything, I'm trying to compliment Crean for the relatively quick manner in which he rebuilt the program. In hindsight, the three bad years after Sampson doesn't seem too bad. It could have been much much worse.
