Thread: Indiana University Athletics Thread 2012-2013

So far the only "vacated" Big Ten Titles were on behalf of Minnesota in 1997 and OSU's share of titles in 2000 and 2002

factoid: The University of Chicago has 6 Big Ten titles, 3 times the number of Northwestern!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ason_champions

Michigan had all or part of six seasons vacated but had no titles in those years,
Minnesota had all or part of seven seasons vacated
Ohio State had all or part of four seasons vacated
Purdue vacated the 1996 season but didn't win the title

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ege_basketball

Oddly, Illinois never vacated any wins while openly playing fast and loose with the rules in the Henson era.

I heard that the Big Ten Network will carry senior night festivities live, after the game is over on ESPN. That's always a fun time, seeing the seniors talk. It will be even more special with (hopefully) an outright title to celebrate

Tonight's Senior Night will be as special as any that have come before. I will be glued to my television for the game and the festivities thereafter. How can you not love these Seniors?? It's going to be emotional.
Take me out to the black, tell 'em I ain't coming back. Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.

Gosh that '75 team and the '93 team are two of the great "what ifs" for me. I think '75 is absolutely a national title if May isn't hurt, and I think '93 very possibly could have been a national title if Henderson hadn't gone down. As a 7 year old kid at the time, the entire '93 team are all heroes to me.

Next year's team is going to have some serious difficulties from beyond the arc without Hulls and Watford. We better pray Creek, Etherington, or Hartman can step in and knock down some open threes or it could be a frustrating season full of zone defenses.

Vonleh has a good shot. He may play on the perimeter quite a bit. What has Yogi's % been since January? I have hope he can be better. Certainly there is no Hulls or Watford in that group, but hopefully enough to get by. Especially if Austin could come back healthy, but i have no idea how his rehab has been.

Kent Benson will be among those honored at tonight's game. Serious question: Does he get booed? Would you boo him?

Why would you boo one the best players in school history who was a huge portion of one of best teams in the history of NCAA basketball?

Because he wears Purdue shirts sometimes?

He switched allegiances to Purdue when they were good. He trashed IU on an interview on BTN while Purdue was at their height and Indiana was at their depth. All while his daughter was a senior at IU playing volleyball. Now he's back on the bandwagon? Sorry, man. You jump ship you are off the ship.

We are talking about a program that still shows and gets ovations for pictures of Bobby Knight, I'm pretty sure Benson giving some positive comments about Purdue to the BTN doesn't even blip the radar.

I've admittedly never gotten hung up on the IU/Purdue rivalry in any sense but I would think pretty much any member, especially an All-American, of the 1976 team would pretty much get carte blanche around Bloomington for life.

Totally different situations. Benson jumped off ship when we were bad, presumably because we were bad, and rubbed it in our faces by becoming a vocal supporter of our arch-rivals. Knight is just a grouchy old guy who holds grudges, but at least his distaste is somewhat justified. He was fired from IU, after all.

Benson jumped off the ship because he adamantly was against the hiring of Sampson is my memory. Don't know that I can totally blame him for that.

Think of it like this (I realize how absurd this sounds, but here goes): A girl you are dating dumps you when you hit a rough patch, then turns around and dates someone she knows you hate, and posts all the pictures of the new relationship on Facebook. Now things are rocky in that relationship and you are thriving, and she decides she wants you back all of a sudden.

Yeah, but what if the girl dumped you because you had gotten drunk at that party and took a quickie in the bathroom with the sorority merry go round and you caught gonorhea? Maybe you should be happy what you caught was curable and now that you aren't walking around with that STD she wants back in on that action.

This is a great comparison BTW

They were nice and plump, but age has not been kind to her. They have begun to sag and have acquired stretchmarks.

She should have been more understanding: It is very difficult to pull off a sorority merry go round, and you certainly can't jeopardize your chances by asking all of them if they have a clean bill of health.

    Allegedly?

Ya'all know the story right? Bird was gone back to French Lick before 10/15, the first day of practice, because Bennie was ripping into him about how ratty the clothes he was wearing to the pickup games were. Bird was poor as dirt, and since 10/15 hadn't rolled around yet he didn't have any nice university-issued practice gear to wear.

One cannot include him in the list of players Knight chased off. He didn't even get a chance to lay into him! Bennie took care of it.

My first in-person game at the Hall, though, was during the '77 season, in which Bennie was a one-man team.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you
