Thread: Indiana University Athletics Thread 2012-2013

At this pace we end up with a worse record than last year.

The blessing here is that Zellers draft stock is dropping with every game. If we keep him, then him and Vonleh should be able to just out talent everybody. Or we can hope I guess.

He was pretty great tonight so I wouldn't say that.

pretty sure Zeller and Victor are gone.

As much as I hate watching Bo Ryan coached offense the dude is one of the greatest bad talent coaches around. His team is so boring and slow that it helps make up for the lack of talent. But It makes sense if you dont have the talent you want the least amount of possessions possible. Only issue with the way he coaches is Im sure he has trouble convincing guys to play at Wisconsin especially guys who want to play in the league.

I agree with Crean thought IU over helped way to much early when you have the guys IU does on defense vs a team without the talent you dont need to help so much. They finally adjusted just a little too late in the game.

Also Watford played me of that player in NBA 2k team up who just doesn't give a **** and just does his own thing on both ends. I am normally that guy Dude has to get with the program and play hard and with the team if IU wants to win.

IU needs an offense/some plays to run when the other team won't let IU 'out talent' (I'm stealing that term) them.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

I turned it off after Watford had his shot blocked by the backboard.

Totally disgusted with Crean. He really doesn't have a clue half the time. Luckily he's good at salesmanship because he sure doesn't know what to do on the sidelines.

It will be really interesting to see if we can impose our will/pace on Wisconsin tonight. No team knows their pace more than the Badgers under Ryan.
    The answer was no.

There were so many things wrong tonight I don't even want to begin to try and break it down. Just a horrible game. Team should be embarrassed by their perforamcne in the past 60 minutes of basketball.

Crowd was pretty ****** too. Students have begged and begged since my class basically for GA seating and now that they have some tickets allocated for that they don't even fill it up, but they do fill up the assigned seating. I say take GA away if they aren't going to make sure they fill it every time.

    Stupid game. Hate you Wisconsin.

How do we end up with a worse record than last year at this pace?

Also, this game is a reminder of where we might be without Zeller still. He is still by far our most consistent player.

Our defense sucked for the first 30 minutes of the game.
Huh? Our D was more than enough for our team to win. Our offense was a dumpster fire.

Bigger picture, we pretty much can only afford two more losses in B1G play and have a chance at a 1 seed IMO, and it's an uphill battle now to win the conference. Wisconsin just neutralizes talent, it's the most annoying thing in the world, but they do it brilliantly.

I don't know. The record says good, but the play, particularly against good teams (Butler, Wisconsin, Minnesota 2nd half), does not. Starting to look like we HAVE TO get to the 80s to win, but the contradiction is that will be less and less likely against top tier competition.

Half court offense and mental toughness (compared to last season) becoming a concern. There's no question they're good, but the mantle of being the hunted is causing them problems. And the continued dominance of WI in the recent portion of the series makes you wonder what that says about Crean being outcoached.

Does anyone know if 11 games in a row is a record for anybody to beat IU? Seems like it almost has to be.

Bo Ryan's teams are often hard to watch, but it reminds me what somebody (perhaps Bum Phillips?) once said about Bear Bryant:

    He'll take his'ns and beat your'ns,
    then iff'n he wanted to,
    he'd take your'ns and beat his'ns

Back then, though, the ref had to use a pole to poke the bottom of the wicker basket in order to get the ball back out, after somebody had made a set shot

The B1G seems to largely be populated by plenty of guys who can coach and plenty of guys who can recruit. Unfortunately, outside of East Lansing, and perhaps now Ann Arbor, they don't overlap all that well.

Tom Crean is hell of a recruiter. A terrible game coach. The same can probably be said of Thad Matta to a lesser degree. Bo Ryan and Matt Painter have the coaching chops but can't combine it with elite talent.

If I was ranking the coaches in the B1G right now, all I can say for sure is that Izzo would be number 1. Crean I think would probably land around 5 or 6. Can you win a national title with the 5th or 6th best coach in a conference that has some pretty good coaches? I don't know for sure, guess we will find out.

I've always thought he was a good coach. I know you guys aren't crazy about his scheme but it works at the college level in my opinion. Now that he can run that scheme with elite talent, it seems pretty damn good. I assume his recruiting will stay at it's current level now that he has the resources.

We'll see, but Michigan's big flaw right now is interior D and interior offense, and you need both of those to win a national title. I don't hate Beilein, but I do question whether his scheme is the BEST scheme for the players he currently has at Michigan.

I don't think Tom Crean is a terrible game coach, He's had some excellent game plans here and at Marquette that used people very effectively.

What is disappointing is sometimes his lack of making significant in-game adjustments. When the opposition just totally loads up on defending the 3, there has to be ways to get mid-range shots. It seems we wanted 3's or dunks, and nothing else.

I'm not sure what would have helped on D last night though. other than 35 seconds of D instead of 32, on a couple of occasions. Everything seemed to go right for them, from fadeaway prayers at the shot clock buzzer to shots hitting the back of the rim and then swishing through.

I think Crean is great at going into a game with a strong game plan. His in game adjustments occasionally are lacking IMO (a lot of the time in the past 2 games)

Exactly what I thought last night. They are not a mentally tough team. When Wisconsin packed it up inside the 3pt line they looked lost and were often rattled into making poor entry passes trying to force something. Then if they did get it inside, the foul shooting under pressure has been pretty poor. Defense wasn't bad, IMO. They blew some switches on occasion. But, there's not much you can do when they pull a very difficult shot out of their *** in the last 2-3 seconds of the shot clock.

The slower we play the lazier we pass, and we've never been good with post entry passes. Yogi and to a lesser extent Jordy can regularly set people up perfectly to catch and shoot when we are playing at a high pace, but post up Cody or CWat in a half court and we never deliver the ball where they don't have to catch it on the wrong foot, take a dribble for balance, or otherwise give the D more time to react. Maddening.
