Apparently Purdue reached out to former Kansas coach Mark Mangino. Oh boy.
He was not that bad of a coach, got in a little trouble, but yeah he fits the bill, offensive coach with experience.

Not at the top of my list but it is what it is...

Yeah, the Mangino stuff's BS. The same guy, Tom Dienhart, is talking about Jim Caldwell now. Just throwing crap against the wall hoping one sticks.

Purdue's female student body sure as hell dodged a bullet on Michael Dixon. What a scumbag.

The next Brian Kelly? At least this guy has shown a willingness to recruit the state of Indiana, which Hope never did.

Are you guys concerned at all about how small his recruiting past is though?

Does give me some pause, but is what it is. He's a good coach though, that's all I ask for. Hope recruited well (for Purdue) and we saw how that turned out.

I can't think of better alternative given the situation. Seems like a good hire on the surface if it happens.

Given the other names that have been brought up, I'll take it.

Hope did, but didn't really get the guys he was targeting, he probably would have been able to get more guys if he targeted ones other than just the top tier, like some of those who are heading to Cincy.

Also, Purdue historically does not get too many instate guys, well since I was there large portions of the team were made up of guys from Floriday and Texas, with some Indiana folks squeezed in there.

Also it is funny how the title says Purdue offers football job... then in the first sentence it says he has not received a firm offer, lol really...

This would be good for both sides. This guy is a legit coach and Purdue already has talent. No reason this guy couldn't make Purdue a threat to go to the Rose Bowl every now and then. But then again I'm bullish on Purdue fooball and think the program could be really really good.

GBI says Purdue's been in touch with Willie Taggart from Western Kentucky. I've seen his name mentioned in "up and comer" type articles but honestly don't know much about him. Record's not too inspiring though.

I think bowls are a dying concept. First a 4 team tourney, and I don't think an 8 team will be far behind. That is where the most money can be made.

Getting to bowl games at Western Kentucky is a huge, huge feat. He turned them around. I think he would be a great get.

I hope this doesn't open a big can of worms, but I kind of want Purdue to hire a black HC in one of the two revenue generating sports. By no means am I saying "hire a black guy" or anything like that, hire the best guy you can get, but you're just ignoring reality if you (the "royal" you, not cdash) think it wouldn't help recruiting. I love Purdue but it's one of the most old school BCS universities there is. There's no lights in the damn football stadium for Pete's (and West Lafayette's Pete's Pete is my uncle. Folllow? Me either.) sake. Yeah, I'm going there. Being a stellar engineering and aviation school is outstanding, but you don't compete in major conference athletics by telling them they can be an astronaut. You do it by recruits and current players building a bond with their coaches. It's not a coincidence hoops recruiting fell off once Clemson gave Rick Ray a bunch of money and it's not a coincidence it picked up once Painter plucked Shrewesberry from Butler. These're uncomfortable truths, but they're truths.

I've watched most of this Xavier-Purdue game today. Couple thoughts:

Purdue won't be very good this year--I'd be surprised if they went dancing come March, but they have some hope for the future. I like their freshman class--particularly AJ Hammons and Ronnie Johnson. Once those guys are juniors/seniors leading this team they could be very good. I can't ever root for Purdue, but I think it would be cool if IU and Purdue could be good at the same time. The rivalry is so much more fun when the games mean something. Last season wasn't bad, but the few years before that Purdue was clearly a step (or three) ahead of IU and this year I think IU is a much better team.

Purdue just doesn't have an identity right now. When you're relying on DJ Byrd to make 5 or 6 threes a game to win, it's not going to work out well. A lot of their big guys try hard, but are not skilled, just have to continue force feeding minutes to Hammons.

Is what it is, gonna be an up and down year. There's improvement from Hammons almost game to game, he's fairly far along in his development, much more than I thought, but he's just pretty soft. Needs to get a fire lit under him, all the cliches.

There's no way Byrd should've been in the last 4 minutes or so of the game though. I know the team's really young and Byrd's a senior and all that but it was clear early on he didn't have it today. If you want to play him at least tell him to stop gunning. That Christon kid for Xavier's the new Tu Holloway, kid was next to unstoppable during that big 2nd half run.

Gonna be nice having Kendall Stephens next year, a kid that's an actual sniper. I hope anyway.

not to be morbid, but I am already readying myself for AJH blowing out his knee, seeing as he is the only positive sign this year and this is Purdue.
