Default Pop says Leonard is future face of Spurs

I think a lot of trades can't be measured for a few years and this is one of those. Sometimes both teams win and sometimes both lose which might be the case of our Golden State trade now that I think back on it. As of right now I'd say both teams have won with this trade but the jury is still out on how far Leonard will go and really how well Hill will pan out as a starting pg since he hasn't been there very long.
I'm happy to have Hill with what he gives this team. Leonard still has a long way to go to be a cornerstone player but I guess someone has to take over once the current era comes to an end.
    Big words from Pop though.

Gregg Popovich envisions Kawhi Leonard as the future cornerstone of the Spurs.
“I think he’s going to be a star. And as time goes on, he’ll be the face of the Spurs I think. At both ends of the court, he is really a special player,” said Popovich, who has been the Spurs' coach since 1996. “And what makes me be so confident about him is that he wants it so badly. He wants to be a good player, I mean a great player. He comes early, he stays late, and he’s coachable, he’s just like a sponge. When you consider he’s only had one year of college and no training camp yet, you can see that he’s going to be something else.”
The Spurs are set to return their entire roster, plus Nando de Colo, who the team selected with the 53rd pick of the 2009 draft.
“Well we thought we were very fortunate and we were very happy that we were able to sign our guys, that we could bring Boris (Diaw) back and Danny (Green) back,” Popovich said. “And they’re going to be even better for us this year, so that’s what we look for in improvement, for them to understand the system more, for Kawhi Leonard to be here in training camp, and so in a sense those three guys are like new players for us. We regard them almost like free agents, and we look forward to them rounding out the group that’s been here.”

Remember: we did not have a need for Leonard. Granger and George would stifled his growth. While this trade will certainly be presented as a win for the Spurs and a loss for the Pacers it was most certainly a win-win. Perhaps, in this case, it just so happened to be more sexy for thr Spurs.

    A brilliant trade.

I still don't see it. He has the chance to be a very nice player, but I don't know about cornerstone in the Tim Duncan light. I'm thinking more like Gerald Wallace.

    pretty much.

leonard is a very nice young player, he actually reminds me a lot of young danny (years 1~2) in many ways. but as we keep repeating ad infinitum, it's actually possible for multiple teams to benefit significantly from a trade...

Yeah, I got a feeling the people complaing about Hill's contract are gonna be eating crow in a couple years.

Probably not the right thread for this, but I wonder if GHill is wise and disciplined enough to be working on his pg skills this summer. He's already a very good shooter and defender. And he did a fine job last year. But we need some offensive movement. Improving his midrange/slashing skills would also help.

Pop seems to be falling in love with every young player that comes through the Spurs...maybe a little Donnie Walsh syndrome going on down there? He's been around old players for so long that any new blood is immediately interesting to him.

Leonard landed in the perfect place for his skills to grow and flourish. He got to start on a veteran team where all he needed to concentrate on was defense, spot up J's, and finishing on the break. He's also getting coached by an all time great coach. With that said, they filled a need and we filled a need. G.Hill was Pop's fave Spur during his time there, so here's to hoping both players meet their potential.

I don't think he's going to ever be what we all envision as a true PG, but I think he'll be better at running the team then he was last year with a full training camp and more minutes with the starters. I could see 15/5/5 with good eficiency and lock down D. I think that's worth 8 Mil.

Along with PG skills, I hope he's working on a post game so he can take advantage of his size. When we play Dallas I know what my gameplan would be .

Yea, I think Leonard looks like a good prospect, but the face of the franchise? Nahhhh.

Pop is also not a fan of Stephen Jackson's "music"

    http://www.nba.com/spurs/features/120830_pop_mailbag

Jack used to try to give me some of his tapes, but, first of all I couldn’t even understand what was going on, and some of them you could even dance to, but once I started hearing what they were saying and everything I just gave them back.

George Hill was looked at ina similar way at one point, and had the Spurs considering moving Parker. Pop seems to be hyping all the young players that come through. I think Hill can still develop more and settle into point guard, and he'll be a very good player too. With our personelle Leonard wouldn't have got as much of a shot as he has in SA. It was a good trade for both sides imo, and I wish Leonard luck, just as i'm sure Spurs fans hope G-Hill continues to blossom.

George Hill's contract is hardly an albatross around the team's neck considering he is only 26 years old. He's not making $12-13 million a year.

I'd be happy to trade this year's 1st to the Spurs for Leonard.

Well, yeah, of course it is probably going to be a late first rounder again.

Face of the franchise? I suppose this means the Spurs are going to tank again and pick another future HOF center.

I think we got the better side of the trade. Hill is a great young PG and can be really good in a few years

I love what George Hill is, I love what Paul George is, and I love what Kawhi Leonard is.

What's the problem? Everyone got what fit best, and I enjoy rooting for Leonard since he was one of the few prospects I got to see and thought had talent in that draft. I like the Spurs org and how they have built teams. Working with guys like Blair and Leonard are another reason I like them.

If only they could get Manu to stop flopping.

Anyway, Leonard vs Paul in a defensive competition is something I hope to see develop the next 5-10 years, with each fighting for near-top All-NBA defensive team honors.
