Default Pacers Met Up In Los Angeles Last Week

    http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap...eles_Last_Week

Approximately eight players from the Pacers worked out together last week in Los Angeles. The entire coaching and training staff also went to Los Angeles.

“That’s a sign of a team that wants to improve,” said Donnie Walsh.

The week together also became a bonding experience, going out to dinner and playing pickup games against other NBA players.

Love that they're getting together, and that the chemistry still flows out of town. I wonder if it had anything to do with Paul (and maybe Danny) not really leaving LA lately (besides going to Shanghai). Can't wait to see what these guys can do next year.

Our arena, their arena, Rucker park, it just doesn't matter. We're bigger, longer, younger, faster, and hungrier.

This is great...seems like they're all excited to get things going and having a pre-training camp

I love the fact that these guys will go out of their normal offseason routine and meet up to keep on improving and building that bond with each other. I can't wait for the season to start.

I know Vnzla balks about the "C" word, but this kind of chemistry can make a real difference. Vogel adds some very interesting intangibles, imo.

I didn't think the coaching staff could do anything more than individual workouts during the offseason? Am I wrong about that?

You know, that was a good question. I'm sure the brass are smart enough to not break any rules, but on the other hand, I also thought there were rules about when TEAM workouts and such could begin. Maybe since it was not the entire team, that makes a difference?

I'd like to find out who all (player-wise) made it there for the gathering.

Ah, wait. The article says only that the coaches and staff also went to LA. It doesn't say they ran the workouts. Perhaps that made a difference, rules wise.

I know they cannot hold a full scale practice. Altough now that I think about this, maybe the key is whether it is mandatory or not or is that football.

I'm sutre the players union would be all over this if it broke some type of rule

I would think for it to be a "practice" every Pacer would have to be there.

I do think that talent trumps chemistry most of the time. But, if you don't have the same or better talent, you HAVE to have the chemistry to give yourself a chance. Lightning can strike, and chemistry CAN on occasion trump talent in single games and over the course of a series. But you have to develop it if that's what you plan to use to win.

I'm sure it was an informal thing. It was probably Danny throwing a house warming party type of scenario. It also says that there were pickup games with other NBA players as well. I bet Danny wanted to host everybody who wanted to come out to LA to his new house. The players play basketball and train damn near everyday in the offseason anyway, so I am sure they wanted to accomodate that and the coaching staff and trainers probably helped out.

I wonder if Tyler was there.

Vogel mentioned bringing the coaching staff out to a location the players had yet to determine for an informal workout in a radio interview right after Hibbert signed... He said as long as it wasn't "Mandatory" in any way there was not a provision in the CBA against it.

Chemistry is a team production enhancer. The more talented you are, the less important chemistry is until it's taken to extremes.

That is good, at this stage in their lives it make no sense what so ever to make it illegal to hold a team practice, I mean they are grown adults. Not being mandatory makes sense, but none at all wouldn't.

From the original Mike Wells article.

The Pacers checked with the NBA to make sure they weren’t breaking any rules. They were only allowed to have six players on the court at a time.
Not sure if that means they could only do 3 on 3 or if they could do 5 on 1 walk throughs.

If it was just an event and the players invited the coaches I don't see how this could be construed as anything that is against the rules.

Off-the-court chemistry has little to do with on-the-court chemistry. This strikes me as an off-the-court chemistry thing.

I think we learned in 2002-2005 that off-the-court chemistry is important, too. It has to at minimum be neutral, it should not be bad.

You know, it strikes me when reading the comments about this activity that some people here, if presented with a story about how Roy Hibbert rescued a kitten, would wonder if he scared the poor thing to death while carrying it down the tree.

We are so set on reading negatives (or at least dismissing positives) that we've taken Mike Wells' story about workouts (and that is EXACTLY his word, "workouts") and turned it into a glorified housewarming party that Danny had which really doesn't show anything at all about the team nor does it any good at all.

OK, I understand not wanting to be homers, but for crying out loud can't we smile and say "hey, that's really good!" when something like this happens instead of trying to eke out any bit of bad interpretation we can get?

we also learned that talent matters. Those teams sucked because they didn't have talent.

Chemistry does matter. The Dallas win over Miami is a good example. But talent matters as Miami showed last year. Personally I't rather my team had talent, if i had to choose.

Of course not. This is Pacers Digest where EVERYTHING is over-scrutinized, over-analyzed, over-glorified and/or under-appreciated. The actual course of action depends on many factors, including moon phases.
