    Default Hughes?

Does anybody know how Hughes is looking in camp? This defense seems to be more tailored to his skills. I hope he can turn it around this year!

Reportedly he's been a bright spot amongst many bright spots, I've read from a few sources that he looks good. Hoping he stays healthy.

I wonder how much time he is getting with Freeney and Mathis playing LB? I agree he is made for this defense and he may shine. The defense was evidently very good the last few days. They had Luck on the run and if they were allowed to tackle, he would have been sacked several times and he was rushed into throwing interceptions. This offensive line is very suspect. Retreads and discards from other teams who won't all of a sudden make a cohesive unit but we can hope..... and Luck better be really hoping.....

OlBlu - I appreciate your point of view, I really do, but could you please stop hijacking all of these Colts threads just to talk about how horrible you think the O-line is gonna be?

    - This has absolutely nothing to do with Hughes or the defense for that matter. I mean, what do I know? You could be right, and the o-line could be bad. This is a Colts forum and that is definitely a valid opinion about the current team, but is it necessary to inject this topic into almost every conversation about the team?

Hughes is the starting end with Freeney and Rob playing more along with Angerer at LB. Our defense could be great in a few years, for the first time.

Where are you getting that at? The only depth chart that I have seen has Hughes as a OLB behind Mathis. Hughes is way to small to play DE in a 3/4.

My expectations for Hughes this season are about as low as possible. He has done nothing in his 2 seasons. I'm not buying that the new defense will make him better. If you can play in the NFL, then you will have success in any defensive scheme.

i hope hughes isn't starting at DE. in a 3-4 defense, you need your line to be bigger. he's better suited at linebacker.

I'd say Hughes looked pretty good, wouldn't you?

Good showing for him, but I want to see consistency. He played a lot of snaps. The #97 cat looked equally as good. Can't remember his name, but a 2nd year guy from Troy. Somebody was saying he looked imposing in the camp thread.

Hughes made me look foolish today, and I am thrilled to eat crow. I don't think this was a fluke game either.

Yeah, especially with all the playing time he got behind 2 of the best DE's in the NFL. You're also right about success in any defensive scheme. ANY player can be successful in ANY scheme. I would like to submit your name to NE coach Bill Belichick in hopes that you can provide him with any needed help on how to coach a team.

As the OLB in a 3-4, Hughes will be able to use his speed. As the DE in the 4-3, he was too small and would blocked out of a play before his speed was a factor.

His 2 sacks today were from just pure speed. I'm definitely glad to see him FINALLY make some plays. Hopefully that little taste of success will get him to work even harder in camp and finally make something of himself in the NFL.

I know with the transition to the 3-4, we're supposed to temper our expectations for the defense, but I am still expecting a HUGE season for Mathis, a surprisingly good season for Freeney, and some kind of positive production from Hughes.

Hughes might end up having the best season of the 3 if he gets too play outside LB. He was never meant to be a DE in the NFL.

Obviously he'll be an OLB. 3-4 OLB is his natural position, not 4-3 DE. This is why you don't write people off as busts after 2 years.

The thing is, when Freeney was drafted and placed at DE he was a revelation and arguably a once in a lifetime talent, when you look at how small he is. If Freeney was drafted in today's NFL, he would almost certainly be an OLB. He was just ahead of the speed curve by about 4 years, but now playing someone like Freeney at DE is a terrible mistake. Same goes for Hughes.

Overall, I've been quite impressed with the defense. The corners need some work, but the LBers look solid and the D-line is definitely more stout. Bethea and Zbk are going to be a good combo in the Safety spots. Can't wait for Angry Pat to come back and head hunt.
