    What constitutes an Englishman to be called "sir"?

    It means they have been Knighted by the Queen.

    Today that generally refers to some entertainer as an example Sir Elton John or Sir Paul McCartney.

    Yes, I am certain that real Knights from back in the day are rolling in their graves over this.
