Usually could care less about womens beach volleyball but just happened to flip it on and watch our #4 ranked team beat the #1 ranked Brazillians, and I honestly wouldn't have cared one way or the other but the way that one of the Brazillian women was constantly taunting us everytime she scored or yelling profusely at her own teammate everytime they got scored upon I rreeeaallly wanted them to lose. I feel bad for the other Brazillian lady who seemed like a good sport through the whole thing and really just absorbing that constant *****ing from her own teammate despite according to the announcers being better than the girl who was constantly yelling at her. It was also just a good story in general cause our tem was basically from the outside looking in not even expected to get a medal and the Brazilians have beaten us 9 straight times supposedly. Not sure if that means that we haven't beaten them in 36 years or not but either way hell of an accomplishment. Now we'll be either playing for Gold or Silver I believe they said on Thursday but they didn't say who we'd be facing, but anyhow...USA!!!!

update: after researching it a little bit both USA teams will play against each other for the silver and gold on wednesday...that's ridiculously awesome lol
I dunno about the whole lost to the Brazilians 9 straight times. Team USA has won the last 2 Gold Medals, and May and Walsh are probably going to win a 3rd straight today/tonight (when its on TV.) DO yourself a favor and not look up anything beach volleyball until you watch the match tonight, because most likely the results will be up, and thus ruin you viewing pleasure.

USA looks like they will prevail after a strong 2nd half.

Maybe I am completely off base here, but the one girl I have not been impressed with from the few games I have seen is Candace Parker. She looks a step slow all around.

Candace has struggled. The shocking thing to me is how many darn layups she's missed.

I'll admit though, Geno's been playing with her head a bit. Probably because he wants to **** her off into playing well, and it's sort of worked..but she's not up to Parker standards.

I think the USA is lucky Penny Taylor tore her ACL. Her extra 20 points would have probably beat the USA..

Who'da thunk it when I was covering high school basketball in 2004 that one of the players would be getting a Gold medal as a member of Team USA Soccer.....

yeah I don't think we are gonna be looking back now. solid 10 medal lead overall and 2 gold lead on china. No more diving/badmiton/ping pong left for china either I think.

I love this article on Taurasi. I really wish men's basketball had a character like her. There's no one that's really polarizing but charismatic at the same time for the men..

That doesn't mean that Taurasi has any intentions of toning it down. As the final ticks clicked off, Australia's defenders bumped Taurasi numerous times with the intent of stopping the clock and sending her to the line. When the referees failed to call the initial contact, Taurasi harrumphed at them incredulously. When they finally blew the whistle, she flashed them one of her smartest wise-guy grins and kicked the ball back soccer style. Asked if she wanted to kill Taurasi when she did that, Bird rolled her eyes and answered quite simply, "Yes.''

That diving gold I think was the most surprising of the entire Olympics by far. The Chinese diver pissed me off because he gave NO credit to Boudia in his statements afterwards, making it seem like he lost it more than Boudia won it. Maybe that's true, I don't know. The 568 points weren't even close to Boudia's personal best, as he broke 600 at the B1G championships. Even if it is true, some athletes have what it takes to perform under the pressure of the biggest stage in their sport and some don't.

Man, I can't agree with that. Everything on tape delay, almost none of the exciting moments live. Pretty lame Olympics IMO. The Fierce/Fab 5 were about the only really exciting thing for me and you know what happened in their events before you even saw it.

I can understand if NBC doesn't want to show events live while most in America are at work, but ya know what? The world has changed. As soon as information is available, it's everywhere in the world in the blink of an eye. Media companies (NBC, Gannett) are trying to hang on to their old world revenue streams in the new world. The world changes every day, there's nothing you can do to stop it. If you don't change with it, you will eventually be left behind, forgotten, and die. Unfortunate, but true.

OK, but NBC's ratings were the highest they have been since the Atlanta game of 1996. So that tells me the way they televised them was correct. Of course you could make the argument that if they covered them correctly the ratings would have been even higher. we'll never know for sure. But things aren't going to change.

another thing, more females watch the coverage than males - only spoting even that is the case. So the coverage is vastly different

Definitely enjoyed the Sydney games more. I honestly can't remember much hubub about live/taped events way way back in that woebegone era of 2008, and that's kind of part of the problem. I'm online A LOT, and it's not even that spoilers necessarily upset me, you don't want em stay off the internet. You hear "2008" and immediately feel like it was yesterday because really it kind of was, but think about it. People weren't legitimately expected to own smartphones and did Twitter even exist in 08? This is a problem whoever broadcasts the Olympics is really going to have to figure out. I don't follow the World Cup at all but I'm interested in how they do with it.

Just, I don't know, there weren't really great stories this time. Not to demean all these insanely hard working athletes, clearly their accomplishments are worth my viewership, but there was nothing new. No superstars were made, as much as we want to hype up womens gymnastics. I'm sure Phelps and Bolt were extremely well known in the swimming and track circles before 08 but not to me, I'd honestly never heard of them. Then we saw them become superstars in a couple weeks. Just felt, I don't know, more organic.

All that coupled with the Redeem Team angle after the 04 Athens disaster, it honestly just wasn't as compelling this time. It was a great Games, but just that, a Games. In 2014 we're not going to hear a thing about any of non-NBA players from this games unless something terrible happens.

Speaking of, go look at the Sydney roster. Iverson AND Marbury. WTF.
