Watched the women's indoor volleyball yesterday vs. S. Korea. Destiney Hooker, who is from down here, is an amazing athlete. Plus, getting to watch long legged ladies in tight shorts with the wife is a bonus!

Men's gymnastics leaders after one day: USA, Russia, Great Britain! Very surprising to see China and Japan struggle.

Is it just me, or are the female gymnasts more female that in years past?

There was a brief, and very decisive, and altogether unprecedented, outburst of genuine officiating, and it was directed at the best player in the world, and that, my dear young person, simply is not done."

I'm pretty sure they look like muscular little girls, per usual.

I don't know that there is a more cut throat/brutal sport than gymnastics. Despite the sparkles, leotards, and ribbons.

I like all the sports, but I am a little less thrilled with any sport where I have to rely on a judge to tell me who won. Higher, stronger, faster. It should be obvious, though there are violations, there are false starts, and there may be need for video replay.

Thus swimming, track and field, basketball, sports with "no style points" kinda float my boat a little more than gymnastics, diving, etc.

Gymnastics is pretty impressive to me. The gymnasts have to check off so many different feats of athleticism to be good.

Pretty stupid rule that the best 24 individual gymnasts regardless of country don't make it into all around. I understand they want to give every country a "chance", but what is this 5th grade soccer? Give me a break. USA should be able to spend all 3 of our all around gymnasts and see if they can sweep the podium, but alas we won't get to. Hopefully they dominate the team event on Tuesday.

I agree. Imagine if they had that rule in all individual sports? Dumb.

Good match between Brazil and USA in volleyball. US 2 points away from closing it out but
Brazil is hanging tough. US WINS! For some reason almost all of the best teams are in the same volleyball pool.

I can't keep up with Fencing, fun to watch but very frustrating. you simply can't see who hits who when. Sometimes its like the lights go off just because the were grazed by the sword tip.

Boise St. provided the field hockey field for the Olympic games. Not sure about the pink border though.

They've actually changed the scoring now, so that there isn't style points. You start out with a score for a routine based on technical level and they deduct for every mistake. Sure the judges could miss a mistake, but that's sort of like refs. I'm not sure which way I prefer it. This way is obviously more fair, but there is something iconic about the idea of getting a "perfect 10."

But that's why the whole sport is so brutal. The goal isn't winning so much as perfection. In most sports you can "grind" or "gut" out a win. Can't do that in gymnastics.

The sad thing about Leiber coming in third, is she was most likely to win gold, IMO. Although Gabby is probably the most talented of the three, I believe she's the youngest (I know she's the least experienced) and is most likely to just mess up in epic proportions. And Ali is "rock solid" meaning she probably won't screw up..but she doesn't have the talent that the other two have. And usually "won't screw up" ends up getting beat.

It is a dumb rule. I think usually it's not a problem, because there isn't usually more than 2 doing an all around.

I can't wait for Sweden vs Norway should be an epic handball match. Denmark just didn't want it as much as Korea in that last match.

Noblesville Boilermaker David Boudia and his partner Nick McCrory took the bronze in the 10m synchronized platform dive today. First US diving metal since the 00 games.

Also, in womens hoops, Australia hit a 60ish footer to force overtime against France.

Actually not true, the US women synchronized diving team won the silver yesterday.

The U.S. is going to have to revamp how it trains its athletes for the Olympics if it wants to be the top dog. China is the new dominant force in international athletic competitions. The Chinese are taking over gymnastics, have a stranglehold on diving, and are becoming a major force in swimming as well.

Start plucking babies out of the crib and put them in the pool, on the balance beam, and on the diving platform like they do in China.

Or maybe we could just decide that it isn't THAT important.

They used to do that behind the iron curtain as well. I agree with Slick, it just isn't that important.

I am really upset about the two competitor per country rule. That seems ridiculous when someone can outperform 90% of the others who qualified and still get eliminated.

And yet we are still tied with them in overall medal count before we've even hit a lot of our big events, including pretty much all of track and field where China can't even hold our jock. Not to mention, the US Ladies gymnastics team should bring in quite a haul over the next couple days.

Also, China can't even begin to touch us in any of the team sports...that should say something right there.

I didn't know whether to feel bad for them or disgusted with them. Where was their competitive spirit? It was like, oops one mistake, the whole team pretty much mailed in the rest of the competition.
