Default NBA Approves Advertising on Uniforms

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/81...2012-13-season

Stern met with the media after the Board of Governors held their annual summer meeting, and said the league is looking to add possibly $100 million in revenue by permitting small advertising patches on uniforms starting in the 2013-14 season.

"The view is that the teams would need a significant time; one, to sell the patch; and number two, for adidas to manufacture the uniforms, because the patch that would be on the players' uniforms would also appear on the jerseys at retail," said deputy commissioner Adam Silver, who is handling the uniform change.

Silver said there are revenue projections from European soccer teams the NBA could use.

....and to drive up jersey sales tenfold this season, knowing fans and retailers will be racing to get them before the advertising ones hit.

There are occasions where the NBA's drive to be like FIFA really annoys me. You don't see MLB or NFL or even ****ing hockey whoring their uniforms out.

Hopefully merchandise sales suffer so horribly because of this that they go back and re-think this.

Well, they will be because there are big dollars involved...... I don't think fans will pay much attention to a 2" by 2" patch.......

I have to say, the WNBA tried this and it worked for them, but I just think that this isnt a good idea for the NBA.

Better get used to the idea. I figured it was just a matter of time. Personally, I'd definitely prefer to not have the advertising on them, but I'm not going to get my panties in a wad over it either (not saying anyone here is). People will get used to it eventually. Like on the WNBA jerseys referenced above, you kind of don't even notice it after a while.

oh, and have fun with the tug of war between a sponsor of a team uniform and a player directly sponsored by a competitor.

Coke sponsors superstar A but doesn't want him wearing the pepsi logo on his jersey. A $100 million endorsement deal is at stake. Player A demands a trade the next day.

Shaq nearly had to quit Dream Team II because of this (he was sponsored by pepsi and McDonald's sponsored the warmups), and that was 18 years ago. The money is a lot bigger now.

This I agree with and had the same thought. Many of us remember the original Dream Team Nike players draping the American flags over their warmups on the medal stand to cover up the Reebok logo (although on the other matter, when you changed your stance from "nobody cares" in your first comment to "I don't care" in your next comment, only THEN you were no longer speaking for me or anyone else).

...except nobody cares what's on WNBA jerseys. The reason people don't notice advertisements on WNBA uniforms is because people don't notice the WNBA. It's like advertising on your 12 year old's little league shirts. The NBA is supposed to be better than this.

You can speak for yourself, but please don't speak for me, because I have watched a number of WNBA games, so I'm speaking from my own personal experience on that matter.

I'm not speaking for you. I'm speaking as someone who has also watched WNBA games, and the reason I don't notice what's on the uniform, is because I don't care what's on them. It's the WNBA. You expect cheap money grabs like this from a minor league desperate to make a buck.

....and my NBA interest slips farther and farther down. Pretty soon they will be wearing ten different sponsor hats at press conferences.

At some point revenue has got to take a back seat to integrity. Just sayin.

I'm excited, can't wait for the Geico Pistons to take on the Farm Bureau Pacers. The real scary part is the (patch(es), not just patch.
You know how hippos are made out to be sweet and silly, like big cows, but are actually extremely dangerous and can kill you with stunning brutality? The Pacers are the NBA's hippos....Matt Moore CBS Sports....

The Pistons have had a presenting partner for nearly a decade now (in place of arena naming rights). I don't mind that. Just don't turn the jerseys into a billboard.

God I hate this. It makes me sad to see this. We knew it was coming eventually, there was no way around it. But I just absolutely cannot stand it.

I really dont mind this that much. Would prefer not to happen but it's not a big deal in my mind. If they go the soccer route and mostly have one big sponsor then I would be totally ok with that. Once they start making alternate jerseys that fit the sponsor's color scheme or put 100 different logos on the same jersey a la NASCAR then I would start getting upset/not buy those.

Patch is OK. I just don't want to see the sponsor name larger than the team name.

It will be. Once it starts down this slope, it's not going to stop until every bit of space has been sold out.

It'll start with a patch, and they they will want to sell two patches, then three, then there will be bigger ones, then they will start on the other side of the jersey...

    easy money is addicting.

and then the NBA will introduce long sleeves and pants to make more room for patches.
