Roy didn't pay for that flight, it was probably on Portlands dime since he was flying out there for his physical and such.

I can just imagine Pritchard and Walsh (probably on a hover round with pritchard on the back) racing through the airport, dodging people left and right and screaming " ROY! ROY! WE STILL LOVE YOU!"

Well then maybe Roy can ask for the reimbursement from Portland

In all seriousness, my issue isn't that they were wrong, but that they were somewhat obnoxious and arrogant in their, shall we say, "misplaced certainty."
The biggest thing wasn't that Kstat and xbulletproof denied that there was a circumstance where Roy might not sign POR's offer sheet, but I know at least kstat said that negotiating with Pacers was absolutely done.

I thought it was at least possible that the Pacers could swoop in and make a separate deal and I was made to look like a pie in the sky idiot.

No big deal being wrong, the important thing is hopefully this really is the scenario we want and it really helps the team.

I don't understand why the Pacers just didn't just let the market dictate both Hibbs and Hill. Does anyone think Hill would have gotten close to $8M from another team? I don't mean to sound like I'm *****ing about it, but I just don't think another team would have offered that. His agent may say he won the starting job, but if it weren't for DC going down with an injury, I am not so sure that would have happened. And he didn't even start that many game. For a small market team that needs to maximize it's dollars the best way possible, overpaying just to overpay for Hill doesn't seem very smart....especially in the long run.

It was like the Season Finale of Friends. The Pacers were Ross and Roy was Rachel.

hold on. this doesn't change the percentage of the yearly raises does it?
The short answer is no. It appears that Roy will sign an agreement with the Pacers that was the same at the one he was going to sign in Portland.

That said, anything is possible until an agreement is signed.

I almost posted the same thing, but Roy turned around at security rather than getting on the plane

Glad he's back, but he'd better improve is all I'm saying. Live up to the contract, get to work and gain a ton of muscle. No more getting pushed around by Big Baby and Joel Anthony.

Roy, welcome to the world of no longer being a pleasant surprise.

Welcome to the world of expectations. Let's hope you man up and act as one of the true team cornerstones, because now the entire fan base will expect nothing less then that.

Granger had a hard time of making that transition within the fan community, and it'll be very interesting to see how Hibbert handles it.

Fingers crossed, but he's going to need some more mental toughness... quickly.

Lol...yea..ok....maybe I should quote your other posts on the subject...theres about 5....look...its simple...its easy for people like myself to say I told you so on an internet message board to someone like you. Because Im simply brighter, more knowledgeable and more experienced than you. So message board or life, it will almost always play out that way. Thats not the point. We are supposed to be entitled to our opinions and be able to disagree without calling one another names and using less than flattering adjectives to describe those that disagree with us as well as speak to others in a condescending tone such as I am doing to you currently. Which is exactly what you and Kstat did to a number of us. Nothing worse than an internet know-it-all that doesnt know it all.

That's all I got, and it's probably more than it deserves.

There were several people here who were vehement that the idea of Hibbert not signing Portland's offer sheet -- for any reason -- was simply unthinkable. Once there's a verbal agreement, it's as good as written in stone, so say these people.

Those people were wrong. Why they can't be big boys and just admit it, I don't know.
I was wrong that he was going to sign it, sure. Even if the end result is going to be exactly the same. However nobody ever presented any scenario other than Hibbert just changing his mind and going back to the negotiating table. So no, "for any reason" never presented itself when only 1 reason was given.

The negotiating is/was done. Aldridge said we are giving him the same terms that were in the offer sheet. We're just doing Portland the favor of not tying up their resources in a lost cause.

So wait, this means that, since he's not signing Portland's offer sheet, that it is possible to hold off a few days on signing Roy to the deal in order to make another move or two before finalizing his contract and eating the rest of the space?

Well then this was actually managed fantastically by the Pacers!

    1. We avoid paying Roy our bloated 5 year Max offer (with the huge raises each season).

2.Retain flexibility to improve the team before signing Roy.

This is pretty much the best possible scenario short of Roy agreeing to a less than the max deal is it not? MAX is a misnomer here, it really isn't that bad for a top 5 center who improves every season.

Let's get some good backup players and i'm ready to go to war next season, if Paul George takes a big step that many believe he's capable of then we can make some noise!

53 pages on the thread about Portland offering Roy the max only 13 when the Pacers say they are matching. Come on guys let's get excited!

The majority of Blazers fans, at least on BlazersEdge, seem to just be in denial. Basically Wells is just lying.

So you know for a fact the deal is the exact same? Front loaded and all?

The Pacers did exactly what I said was possible, they told Roy they would give him a contract without Roy signing POR's offer sheet.

I don't why this is difficult, I wasn't even giving you a hard time about being wrong. You were wrong to say that negotiating was done, in the very least Hibbert could of just signed POR's offer like you said would happen and let everything play out. Instead he chose to work with the Pacers.

I realize that if we're just talking about this summer, but it was a potential move we could have made during the season if we were signing him to an extension, hence, a potential outcome at one point regarding retaining Roy's services. What happened is also preferable to Roy signing the offer sheet and putting a stricter time limit on our chances to sign some more talent before inking Roy.

Now that our biggest hurdle is over and done with hopefully we'll make a few moves soon. I can understand the FO's reasoning for what they are doing, our starting lineup was already, statistically one of the most dominate unites int he NBA last season, by +- and pretty much every other metric, West will be in his late season/ playoff form all year, paul george and roy hibbert are likely to take steps too, you can see why keeping that unit together was seen as important. Looking at results our bench was the thing that needed to be improved, hence the people that we have been targeting.

Not exactly. We committed to the same money and years as Portland (i.e. 4 years/$58m). Definitely won't be the same terms - Portland would have poison-pilled the contract to make it difficult to match, their usual trick being to set the schedule of payments so that a huge chunk of money gets paid up front (this usually gets reported in the media as "front loading" though it often gets confused with signing bonuses). This wouldn't affect the cap hit of the contract but could have created cash flow problems for Simon.

That said, with 4 years/$58m as the baseline for a deal, I don't see why Pacers and Hibbert won't negotiate up to a 5 year deal if they can find a compromise they're both happy with. I still think 5 years/$68m would be a good end game for both parties.

Lol dude it has not even been a day, that is a bunch, and that thread was about so much and had a ton of time to develop, and more than 75 % of it is probably redundant...
