Thread: Let's talk about Miles Plumlee

I am fine with this pick. We needed a big badly. Vogel has said from day one that we are going to be smash mouth basketball team. Larry was so PiSSd and called us soft after we were eliminated from the playoffs. This was Larry just trying to bring some toughness to our team. I think we did exactly what we should have done in the draft. We got a big body for the 2nd team that can clog the middle, rebound and a guard that can create his own shot. I agree with others that have said "none of these draft picks have proved anything" There were plenty of mid first round picks that you really have no idea what you are going to get at the next level. At least with Miles' you know exactly what you are going to get. Even though what you get may be limited but what he does give you is what every team needs. That's a lunch pale big that can go in and fight for boards which is all we need from our backup center. imo

You never draft on need take best player available in the draft and never draft bigs who all they can give you is 6 fouls and a big body get them in free agency.

Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy, Peja Stojakovic, Tyler Hansbrough, Josh McRoberts, Travis Deiner, Lou Amundson, Fes and now Miles Plumlee.
Peja Stojakovic was never a bad player. He just did not care enough to play for Indiana.

Tyler Hansbrough was a kickass college player that did not pan out that well in the NBA.

Lou Amundson is a decent role player.

Fesenko is a good backup big but Vogel chose not to play him even though it was evident that we needed his size.

So my thoughts on this guy after I slept on it:

    1) I still think we probly should've gone someone else at 26, because he likely would've been available later on, if they wanted to pay cash for him.
    2) His physical profile and skillset says something like, "This guy should be pretty good", but the reality is his utilization and contribution were quite a bit lower than you'd expect. Why? Not aggressive enough? Too passive, doesn't want the spotlight? Inconsistency? I think these are the big questions for me as he goes into his pro career. If it's just a matter of... he needs to come out of his shell a bit, then we may have a decent player here. But he's older by rookie standards; he had plenty of opportunities --- why is he still in a shell?

I like the things he actually brings to the table.... offensive rebounding, pick-setting, rolling.... but..... we already have Pendergraph....

It did seem like there were some playmakers still on the board. But it's pick 26 --- it's not a hot-spot for future All-Star candidates. You're likely talking a role-player at this spot, so maybe the pick wasn't so ludicrous. I guess time will tell.

I wish the Pacers were more worried about the basketball portion, than they are about the smashmouth portion of the entirely ridiculous, invention of "smashmouth basketball."

Fesenko. Might end up being cheaper than Plumlee. I am disappointed in this pick mostly because I really believe in Fesenko.
I do agree with this. That's the downside of this pick, imo. Please, let us resign Fes and play him

I agree with the first part... disagree with the last part. They can achieve both.

I'm so sick and tired of the "smashmouth" bs, why not try to get players that can actually play? Are we going to keep running that ugly "smashmouth" offense so we can keep talking about been "smashmouth"?

I'm not sure what point you're making. The same would hold no matter who we draft at 26, i.e. any player drafted at position x means that he was passed over x-1 times. That's just true by definition.
Flawless logic, but I have a hunch it'll go over certain people's heads.

I don't care what anybody thinks of the pick. I'm rooting for this kid to succeed. I want to see him do well and develop. I think he is a great fit for our team, even if his perceived talent isn't up to par with other kids' upside. Good luck Miles. I'll be rooting for you.

Do I think we could have traded back to get this kid? yes. 26 for 33 and 34 would have saved us some cash and gotten us both of our guys. That is the one thing I dislike about the pick, but we have to live with it. Move forward, don't live in the past.

There are several reports that indicate that the Wolves were trying to trade up for him.

not flawless you go bpa by tiers and Plumlee was a tier 6(I would of had him in 7 or 8) at best and there was a tier 4 guy on the board. Take the BPA and add a Plumlee in free agency DONT Fin DRAFT BY NEED.

Pritch also said there was another team involved trying to move up too.

He is an excellent defender and has the needed girth and size to establish a deep post position. I wanted Fes during the previous season. I was overjoyed when we signed him and bummed when we did not play him enough.

I'm just wondering whether this was Larry's way of saying that the Pacers really could do ok without him. Nah.

Why do I get the feeling that all this emotion stems from his name? He kind of sounds like the nerdy, fancy lad that even the unpopular kids picked on: Miles Plumlee.

Maybe we should start calling him "Sterling Steel" or "Magnus von Armstrong". Somebody call America's Got Talent and see if we can get Nick Cannon to legally switch names with him.

    I'm just trying to help...

I'm saying that the FO probably didn't see a player that fit the other needs, at a level that's needed, like a scorer for the bench. So instead of taking a gamble on a player, and striking out, you find a more suited player for a lower role and then use your cap space to fill the other voids with proven NBA players.

I didn't think I should have to spell this out.
It's playoff team building 101 - Hit as many singles as you can and never swing for the fences. I just wish they were studying championship building 101, cause what they are building isn't it.
