    Very good post.

Only problem I have with it is, how late can a person actually "bloom?" Dude is already going to be 24 years old as a rookie.
Agreed, seems old for that kind of thing, but they say bigs take longer. Thats usually talking about once they join the NBA, though. Might be wishful thinking on my part, but let me hold on to something!

Not sure if it has been posted, but we picked Plum early because the Wolves were trying to move up and get him.

I'll root for Miles, no doubt.

The problem being, as a small market team, the best way to build is through the draft. We have to take risks, or take the best player available.

We're not even close to being good enough to draft role players. Even if we were, guys like Miles are a dime a dozen. You can get an even cheaper one through the D League.

There are a hundred reasons to be mad with this pick. I'll still root for Miles.

Camby played 59 games and averaged 5 and 9 with 1.4 blocks in 23 minutes. For a 2 year contract he would be worth 6 million IMO.
With the exception of the blocks, I don't think it's unheard of to expect Plumlee to produce these kinds numbers for points and rebounds. Perhaps even better. His paycheck? Less than $900,000.

And he's not on the verge of breaking a hip or some other geriatric condition.

There were "many better options" for a proven scorer for the bench still on the board? Okay....

So the list you provided was proven NBA scorers or proven NCAA scorers? The difference between the two is night and day.
Not one single player eligible to be drafted has proven they can score in the NBA. Thanks for clearing that up.

I like Plumlee. He isnt tatted up and looks like a good kid. Its hard cheering on teams full of tatted up players.

This doesn't help in anyone justifying the pick does it?

I think that Plumlee was a great pick. We needed another big man with Lou's probable departure. People need to understand that we are in "win now" mode, and TPTB didn't want a project player that they were going to have to invest a lot of time and resources in. Plumlee is ready to contribute right now. All he will be asked to do is play defense, and set screens. He will not care at all about scoring points. He will not shoot unless it is a dunk or a lay up.

He is very much like McRoberts. I like his athleticism. He has a 40" verticle and he is built strong. He will be an excellent backup to Hibbert and will play some PF too. I don't see why everyone is so down on him. Bird was going to go for a big man. He doesn't buy into the notion that we have a PG problem and never has......
So you like him because he reminds you of a player that you disliked so mich that you referred to him as McBrick? I've supported you when most have not, but this is egg on your face in the troll discussion.

IF the goal is to provide valuable defense then I will take Marcus Camby over Plumlee on a shorter contract for more money. If someone says there is upside with this pick I can't disagree with that but how much is really debatable. Defensive bigs are a dime a dozen in the league and can easily be gotten in FA's every year. Now a low post scorer is different but thats not Miles and probably never will be.

The buried-on-the-bench undersized senior center from IU, Tom Pritchard, looks at Miles Plumlee and says "I think I could take him"

And you know what, I bet he's right.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

    Perhaps Asher was really Bird.

And apparently he took a lot of the sarcastic comments seriously. Primarily this one.

If this team is going to work, we're going to need to start drafting players who are the 4th and 5th options on their college teams. We need guys who won't have to make such grueling sacrifices for the good of the team.

I hope Bird focuses his first round pick on somebody like Tom Pritchard or Sandi Marcius.
Unfortunately, he wasn't quite good enough to be the 4th or 5th option for his college team.

Everyone says he is a athletic freak but so what. A lot of guys don't play up to their athleticism and thats what I see from Miles. A guy who doesn't jump with a 40 inch vertical most of the time is a good as a guy who just jumps in low 30s every time.

I don't disagree (a la the Foster comparisons) and correct me if I've misunderstood you but to suggest that Marcus Camby, especially at this point in his career, is a low-post scoring threat worth 3 million a year is, with all due respect, ill informed.

I wouldn't have needed to clear it up, had you noticed that's what I said in my post. I said that they needed a PROVEN scorer for the bench, and you started talking about ppg in college.

Funny line from Bill Simmons about our pick at 10:04 in his diary...

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/...raft-diary-xvi

10:04 — Instead of taking Miles Plumlee at no. 26, Indiana should have just walked over to Perry Jones and dumped a bucket of manure on him. That's tonight's first pick that elicited outright laughter from everyone in my living room. It's almost like they knew Larry Bird was leaving and wanted to take one last white guy in his honor, only all the white guys got taken and they still stubbornly stuck to the plan. Nope, we promised we'd do it for Larry … just take Plumlee, it will be fine …
    Why so SERIOUS

All you've proven with this post is that NBA players are generally one of the best players on their college team. Congratulations.

Otherwise, listing players by their PPG and whether or not they lead their team in college has absolutely nothing to do with the NBA.
This is my favorite post from that thread.

We may not have gotten one of the best players from Duke's college team, but we did get the 3rd best Plumlee from Duke's college team.

Well his younger brothers followed him to Duke so maybe his younger brothers will follow him to Indiana? Ugh.

I honestly wanted Teague because I heard DC was on the block. I am ok with this pick. It is not like TPTB spent a lottery pick on MP. Chances of any of these players picked around 26th making a real difference are slim. Most will be role players and that's what we got. MP will be a backup big playing the 4-5. We need to exhale and wait and see the rest of the moves. At the very least, Bird added a needed piece to the 2nd unit.
