Default Latest on the chase for Steve Nash

The chatter about Steve Nash’s future whipped up in earnest over the weekend, which isn’t surprising for two reasons:

    1. Free agency is officially less than a month away now that we’re into June.

    2. Nash and another NBA senior citizen -- Boston’s Kevin Garnett –--would appear to be the two most attractive unrestricted free agents on the 2012 market not named Deron Williams ... since no one expects Tim Duncan to give leaving San Antonio one millisecond of thought when Duncan theoretically joins Nash and KG on the open market July 1.

Nash himself, I’m told, is still days away from giving his future deep thought. He said many times late in the regular season that he’ll listen to any pitch that comes this summer, hoping that the next contract he signs -- preferably for three seasons -- will be his last. But he admitted last month at a press conference in Toronto that he hadn’t even started the process.

More, then, is known about the teams chasing Nash. It’s a list that still starts with the Phoenix Suns, who cling to the hope that they can keep the most beloved player in franchise history, but it’s also destined to be a longer list than you think once free agency actually starts, since Nash is seen around the league as far more gettable than D-Will.

Sources briefed on the matter told ESPN.com that the three teams with salary-cap space best positioned to make a credible run at the 38-year-old, at this early juncture, are Portland, Toronto and Brooklyn (should the Nets lose D-Will).

New York and Miami are also frequently mentioned as potential Nash destinations, but neither the Knicks nor the Heat have the requisite cap room to make a serious bid. The Blazers, by contrast, have coveted Nash for years in trades and will finally have the financial flexibility to chase him, offering the closest proximity to Nash’s Vancouver roots than anywhere else on the NBA map among other perks. Sources say that the Raptors, meanwhile, will be determined suitors in the Nash Sweepstakes, with a serious offer forthcoming to try to bring the newly installed general manager of Canada’s national team back to home soil after 16 seasons south of the border with the Suns and Mavericks.

Also: CSNChicago.com reported Sunday that the Chicago Bulls intend to join the Knicks and Heat on the list of glamour teams that will take a long-shot run at Nash. You can go ahead and put Dallas in that club, too, should the Mavericks fail in their attempt to bring DFW-area native D-Will home.

The New York Daily News, furthermore, reports that the Suns plan to “go all out” for Williams if they end up losing Nash. The safest forecast of them all: This won’t be the last story that mentions both Williams and Nash, since they’re two of the certifiable stars -- albeit at vastly different stages of their career -- in a free-agent class with precious few of them.

Why are we not on that list? Are we not "a team with salary-cap space best positioned to make a credible run at the 38-year-old"?
Do you think we just haven't shown intentions of trying to sign him, or the writer just doesn't care about us enough?

If Nash ends up going to Portland, Toronto, or New Jersey, that will say a lot about him. I don't see the interest he'd have in those three teams based on the way he is portrayed right now.

I'd bet the Pacers make a behind the scenes offer or at least reach out. It's a really nice fit, imo. You could have the same conversation you had with West and see what he thinks.

Sports Illustrated did a similar breakdown of the upcoming free agents, and they listed Phoenix, Blazers, Hawks or Heat as possible teams for Nash. The only player the Pacers are linked to (again, according to SI) is Mayo.

Which made me wonder if Mayo is still floating around in Bird's head?

How would the Bulls work when Rose is healthy after this year? Why would Nash want to play off the bench?

Well, hopefully it's just the media overlooking us as usual.
Neither the Bulls nor Miami can give him nearly his market value, anyway.

But as a pure basketball experiment, Nash and Bulls would be very interesting. They'd compete next year, and whenever Rose is ready, they could go small a lot.
Offensively, Nash-Rose can be devastating, much better than Rose-Kyle Korver. Defensively, Thibs would have a big puzzle to solve but I'd love to see him try.

Why would Nash leave phoenix for any of those three teams?
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

I can see him wanting to go to Toronto, obviously not to win a championship (although who's to say really), but because he wants to play the remainder of his career in his home country. The other two destinations don't seem to make any more sense than Phoenix, at least not to me.

But honestly, they would be better off in my opinion getting an actual two guard who can light it up for the MLE like Ray Allen, Jason Terry, or Lou Williams and then trying to get a microwave guy off the bench such as Jamal Crawford.

TT has defense taken care of.

As fun as it is to enivision and dream about, I sincerely doubt we are or will be players for Nash. I would love to see him on this team too, but nor he or Deron Williams will be walking through that door, folks.

Who would have thought West would come here either.

I thought I read somewhere that Nash wants to play for a contender. Boston has Rondo, Miami isn't a good fit because James & Wade dominate the ball so much. Out West OKC & the Spurs have solid players at the one.

If Nash wants a shot at a ring I would think Chicago or Indiana would be his two best options.

We have the money to pay him, do the Bulls?

I can not possibly see how the Blazers or Nets would be of ANY interest. I thought that Nash wanted to win a title? Right? The only thing Toronto brings is the "home" feel, but Portland is still closer.

If Nash cares about both winning and getting paid, then Indy really is his best option.

I honestly think without Rose our team is better, younger and probably a little bit of a better fit for him (West being the pick and pop threat he is, Plus Granger and George)...if he still wants to get paid well he best come to Indy.

The more important question is will the Pacers target and spend the money on Nash?

There's a difference between my comment that we won't lure stars via free agency and you constantly ragging on our current players.

I may be too dumb to know what realistic means, but I'm smart enough to know that arguing with you is like banging your head against a wall, so I will bow out.

Okay......Toronto having the only real edge due to the whole "Wanting to play for his home Country" angle.....assuming that the Pacers are willing to offer a $10 mil / $30 mil total / 3 year contract.....yes, that's a big assumption....why would Nash choose not to come to Indy if Toronto, Portland, Brooklyn and Indy were making the same contract offer of 3 years?

West and Nash together would be scary. We really should pour everything toward Hibbert, Nash, Granger, George and West....and make another run.
