Outside of having to dump players due to a bad rep from the Brawl, which was a historical aberration, I'd say we have a strong history of winning trades. The ones that stand out immediately: the Mark Jackson trade (twice), Jalen Rose, Jermaine O'Neal, Brad Miller, Ron Artest (pre-brawl). And at this point I'd say we certainly won the JO for Ford-Hibbert trade, wouldn't you?
Are you planning in going into rebuilding more after trading Hibbert? Yeah it's nice to know that we "won" some Trades but it took years and crappy players in between to know if we really won them.

The JO trade is a win right now but how many years took Roy to finally show that he can be a piece? Or the years we had to deal with TJ's contract? Or Rasho? It's not as easy as re-signing him and trading him for a young superstar and an expiring, a lot of times teams want you to take one or two crappy players.

It looks like the Mavs are trying to bring in new has-beens to replace their departing ones...

League executives believe Dallas, a rare big-market team with cap room, is the odds-on favorite to pluck Elton Brand off the amnesty wire.

Does the amnesty period for Brand start now or after the 11th?

I wonder how it feels to let a title team walk for the chance at a shiny new "maybe", only to find that you are headed back to the lottery?

Well it'd be kinda hard to speculate what the case would be if we traded Hibbert wouldn't it? I wouldn't be planning on trading him. But I think you could go either way: rebuild if necessary by getting some other young pieces, or get current good players that fill a different need. The contract is taking him from age 25 to age 29. He's going to be in his "prime" years.

Roy started playing 25 min by his 2nd year...so...I don't think it took him that long to show he could be a "piece." And the years it took in between to "know if we really won them" seems to refer specifically to JO, when we restructured our championship team into a much younger championship contender. While we had a few seasons of .500 play, I think it was pretty clear that the team was going to be good. The trades I listed tended to have an immediate impact. And the trades we didn't "win" and the period of time that took us up until now were a direct result of the Brawl. It's taken 8 years to recover from that. Those trades weren't ideal by any means, and I think we all know that.

To me a Mayo signing means that a Hibbert match is coming. I believe that we are in win now mode and spending a little bit more money is necessary. With Hill, Hibbert, and Mayo signed we would have an even more formidable team to compete.

Just fyi, Mayo is 24. Could be a win-now piece and a "build for the future" piece. Same as Hill or Hibbert. Better than Crawford for that reason.

Yeah, much better than Crawford. So glad the Pacers never got him.

I don't know about that. Zero-time All-Star, repeatedly-injured, 27-year-old Andrew Bogut (along with atrocious team cancer, Stephen Jackson)was able to fetch Monta Ellis, Ekpe Udoh (sixth pick two-years-ago), and a $7M expiring contract (Kwame Brown).

This is why we must match Portland's offer to Roy. Even if we get buyer's remorse, he can be used as a major trade chip to bring in other assets and future savings. It's low-risk, high-reward.
That's fine, but we weren't talking about matching here. Rather, about what he could bring in a S&T. You have to look at it from the Blazers point of view.
They might not be giving up expirings and Monta here, but they are giving 4 years of cap space at 14.5 mil each, on average.

They are getting a center who had a good but inconsistent career year, so there's certainly a risk and question marks. Possibly a bigger risk than with Bogut - with Bogut, the question is health; but his contract is cheaper and shorter. And we know he's consistently very good when at least semi-healthy; and if fully healthy, he's All-NBA.
Few people would say Hibbert is a max player right now, so this is more about overpaying because of the market and also hoping he improves a little / stays consistent.

Also, to be fair, the Warriors got Harrison Barnes. Now, Barnes / #7 was part of the trade, but it was part of the Warriors thinking, and they were open about it. The Blazers don't have such considerations here.

So, put it all together from the Blazers point of view. The Blazers aren't getting him for free. They are giving up a ton of cap space for many years. That's better than expirings. They are also knowingly overpaying and taking some risk here, betting on Hibbert's future. And unlike the Warriors, they aren't expecting to end up with a high lotto pick out of it.
So, would you expect the Blazers to break a bank in a Hibbert S&T and give us something of Monta caliber? I wouldn't.

Now matching him is another issue. We would be overpaying, but we know he's a key piece for us, and at the very least, if healthy, he should look as good in our system and he looked last year. Even if he does not progress, he should have decent value, especially when his contract is shorter.
But again, that's a different topic.
When it comes to S&T, you have to consider it from the Blazers perspective.

just as a side note. Bogut at his best was better than Hibbert this year. Maybe he didn't get voted an All Star, he was All-NBA though, and in the end, these awards don't always reflect individual excellence. A few years ago, prior to his injury, he was arguably the 2nd best true center in the league. And he's still very good when healthy.

Trading Iggy and Turner for Granger and DC.

I kid, I kid. I really have no clue. Brand was an expiring, so it definitely leads you to think that something is about to go down.

If we landed Brand and Mayo for the right price and kept Hibbert, I'm o.k. with that.
I want Hibbert matched no matter what even though I realize that we're overpaying.
I also think we need to bring in tradeable assets and improve the team with what cap space we have before matching Hibbert. Even if the fit isn't perfect now, it's still better to have the assets then not.
With this in mind we can't overpay for Mayo if we get him.
I ask myself how can we spend our cap space to impact the wins on this team and I keep coming back to Kaman as the only logical choice. It's a big question if we can land him with the cap space we have but I think we could. He hasn't had any other winning teams with more then the MLE to offer him show interest and he said that he wants to sign with a playoff team.
Mayo and brand both sucked in the playoffs this year. I don't see either player helping us much next year. Brand is done, and Mayo might revert to his old self and us something that we don't have on our bench. Kaman could start or come of the bench and play 30 min. between the 4/5 and when combined with Hibbert and West, we'd have an advantage over any front court in the east.
For the money Kaman> then the combination for Brand/Mayo for the same money, he'll be with us long term and is far more tradeable if we get a chance to move on a top pg.

I kind of like the idea of bringing Bayless here if we look to move Collison. He could be had for cheap, possibly a 3 year deal @ 2mil per season. He has better size than Daren, is at least almost as fast and probably more athletic. He is a better outside shooter (streaky but so is Daren) gets to the line almost at will.....I think he still has some upside and was just a victim of the numbers in Toronto as they bring in Lowry.

He's probably headed to a contender. But I'd be fine with him coming off the bench here.

He has no choice in where he goes. It's how much a qualified team secretly bids on him. High bidder gets the player.

I'd hope the Pacers put in a bid.

$8-$9M kinda makes me sick to my stomach to pay for a backup.
It doesn't set well with me either. However, if Mayo pulls ahead of Paul George and lands in the starting lineup, you then have a reasonably priced starter, and a cheap, experienced backup.

They had to amnesty Brand to make room for Nick Young. I think they're going to try and sign Ilyasova to start at PF.

heh. but tbh, if your team isn't going to get anything out of Ron Ron at all, that's 26-27 mil a year for Pau Gasol... he'd better play like a top 10 player every game at that price.
