Pacers need a two guard, targeting O.J. Mayo, Courtney Lee

    Kurt Helin

While the Pacers front office is grappling with the big question — literally — of whether to match the Trail Blazers max offer for center Roy Hibbert, they are dealing with their other needs as well.
Specifically, they need to step up at the two guard. More accurately, they need to bring in a shooting guard sixth man who keeps the pressure on Paul George to perform and can get them some points.
And they are looking at two players with very different skill sets in O.J. Mayo and Courtney Lee, reports Mike Wells at the Indy Star.
Mayo is the top choice for the Pacers. He’s been their top choice for a few years now. The Pacers have “great, great interest” in Mayo, one person told me….
The Pacers have to decide how much they want to pay the former lottery pick and does Mayo mind continuing to come off the bench.
Lee brings better defense, is a better three-point shooter, is an Indianapolis native and probably comes at a lower price.
Lou Williams is also now fully on the market, he costs more but can also put up more points than either of these two.
Smart money is still on a good offer for Mayo, who can come off the bench and create his own shot, the roles the Pacers need to fill. But look for some movement from the Pacers in the next five days on this front.
As for Hibbert, we may have to wait until July 14 for an answer.
Lou Williams? Seriously? A 6'1 sg? WTF He's shot right at 40% the past 2 years. He may score more, but he's far from efficient. Mayo would be ideal, but depends on the asking price. I hope the Pacers don't pay $8M/yr+ for a backup shooting guard. Courtney Lee would be great. His defense is better and he can hit the 3...that's all you can really want in a backup shooting guard, and his price should be much much lower.

I honestly don't like how we are stockpiling combo guards though. It's a bit unnerving. How about finding a future replacement for West, or at least a better backup PF than Hans. Or how about getting a backup SF for Granger. I like DJ for his defense, but he's no SF.

Ok, so say the Pacers get Mayo.

Does that mean Lance is toast? I would assume this would mean that DC, Lance and Hans are all trade-able right now. Doesn't sound bad if it can bring something good back. Like DC/Hans/Lance to Houston for White and Marcus Morris. Something like that.

I've heard news like this many times before. I refuse to believe until it's confirmed and even then I've seen that backfire.

    Pacers: Mayo or Lee?

    OJ Mayo or Courtney Lee?

Pick one. Not both. Only one.

Those are the two shooting guards the Pacers have their eyes on as they try to plug their hole at sixth man and also give Paul George a good wakeup call that he’ll have to continue to work to keep his starting spot. They’ve reached out to Mayo and Lee.
Mayo is the top choice for the Pacers. He’s been their top choice for a few years now.

The Pacers have “great, great interest” in Mayo, one person told me.

Can you imagine if Larry Bird was still around? He’d be going crazy trying to get Mayo to sign with the Pacers.
Two things that could make Mayo hesitant to sign with the Pacers. Price and where he fits in.

The Pacers have to decide how much they want to pay the former lottery pick and does Mayo mind continuing to come off the bench.
He could wait for New Orleans to match Phoenix’s offer to Eric Gordon and then sign with the Suns so that he could be the starting shooting guard.

The Pacers will likely be better than the Suns with or without Mayo next season.

I’ve always liked Lee’s game. The Indianapolis native isn’t flashy. He just plays hard on both ends of the court. He’s a solid defender. He was the Orlando Magic’s starting shooting guard the year they went to the Finals against the Lakers.

I like them both, but I’m going with Mayo because he can get his own shot off the dribble. That’s been a major problem with the Pacers in the past.

Gerald Green and Lou Williams are also on the market.

As far as Roy Hibbert goes, the Pacers are still on the fence on if they want to match Portland’s four-year, $58-million offer to him.

$8-$9M kinda makes me sick to my stomach to pay for a backup.

If we sign him, I am curious to see the figures. I have a hunch, depending on the money, that he isn't coming here to be a backup.

Agreed that it's too much for just a backup. But for a guy that can start it's a solid value. I don't believe Mayo has been used correctly.. He is a guy that should get better in the right role. I don't think we should give up $8 mil, unless some of it is based on performance or something like that.. But he could be a game changer for us for sure.. A confident scorer that isn't a bad team player and can defend doesn't sound that bad to me.

Mayo could be a somewhat risky signing, but it would be one that has potential to be a great signing.

Yup, and that is why I stopped following him on twitter, he really has no information, just kind of compiles stuff that others say.

Move Danny for Al Jefferson he could start then.... thought I'd throw a crazy baseless idea out here while we wait for some guy I've never heard of to tell us they've overpaid for a back up combo guard.

Hes not a source at all.

Yea, I guess he's credible since all he reports is whats already been reported by someone else.
