    Hollinger analysis on Insider...

+ Short, crafty, powerful power forward with great feel for scoring in paint.

+ Unusually good at shooting floaters. Poor shooter and rebounder.

+ Conditioning an issue. High foul rate. Strong, but struggles defending long bigs.

Smith remains one of the league's most underrated performers, because his flaws are obvious (he's short, stocky and can't jump or shoot), while his positives are subtle. Smith is a tremendous finisher in the paint area despite his lack of size, shooting 55.3 percent last season -- his fourth straight year above 55. Around the rim is his specialty: Despite being vertically challenged, he shot 67.3 percent in the basket area and drew a high rate of fouls. Moreover, he is as good as any big man I've ever seen at shooting floaters -- often off a quick move from the high post. Last season, he was 28-of-48 from 3-to-9 feet; while that's a small sample size, it's not uncommon territory for him.

Defensively, Smith compensates by fouling early and often -- only three power forwards did so more often than his 5.73 per 40 minutes -- and certainly his matchups need to be managed carefully. However, his numbers are quite competent; Synergy, adjusted plus-minus and 82games.com all show him to be a middle-of-the-pack defensive power forward. While that probably overstate things -- he was placed in situations where his defense was least likely to be exposed -- it shows his basketball acumen helps offset some of his physical limitations.

I'm not saying he's a star by any means. But he's a productive player on a bargain contract, one that the league largely overlooked in free agency twice because he didn't look like a basketball player.

The Craig Smith guy averaged what 4 and 3 last year, man, Tyler has fallen hard.

Craig Smith is the exact opposite of long.

I've read three scouting reports on him, including the Hollinger one in BB's post above. I have no problem with anything except one glaring point. They all state he is a poor rebounder for his size/position. Sorry, don't we already have enough of those?

Now Im no fan of Hansbrough, but some of you actually think Craig Smith is better than him?

I don't. But for bench folks, the question is more one of bang for the buck. Craig Smith will be a 1-1.5/year guy... which is half of TH's cost this year.

Craig Smith? Srsly? No thanks. He's a horrible rebounder.

Now Greg Smith...that would be nice.

at people who are saying Smith will get Tyler's minutes. I hate Tyler as much as the next guy but this dude is about 6'7 and not even a role player he is an end of bench kinda guy

yeah, that seems to be the trend with the Larry Bird acquisitions. Size at each position. Danny is big for a SF. Paul for a SG, Roy for a C and now Hill for a PG. Both Mahinmi and Plumlee have good size. Pacers are getting bigger. IMO, that is a good thing. Much of the problems that DC and Tyler had came from being undersized. Like it or not, size matter in the NBA.

Except Smith is undersized for a PF in height.

Would still prefer a defensively versatile guy like Dominc McGuire if we're just looking for bench fodder on the minimum.

Except that he is a poor rebounder. Combine him w/Hans for two undersized (height), light rebounding bench PFs. Meh.

Someone needs to ask Wells or somebody else in the know if there is a good reason the Pacers did not bid on Scola, or if it was simply the stupid and pure reason that they signed Roy and George too early.

Go ahead and try. I've asked him questions like this before and he just won't answer. I think he doesn't want to appear negative toward the organization.

That's never been a problem with Wells before. He's been pretty critical of them during their down years.

Pritchard said that they didn't have enough time.

Call me crazy but I rather have Scola over Mahinmi, Green and whoever else they are going to get.

Fascinated by the Princeton offense news. Should work well with Nash, no?
Actually it's the opposite of the type of offense you should run when you have Steve Nash. The Princeton offense generally calls for the point guard to make a pass to start every set. It is an offense that makes sense when you don't have a PG who is a great distributer or ball handler.

So, it would make sense for a Team like the Pacers?

Yeah. And if I'm not mistaken it's at least partially what Georgetown liked to run when Roy was there (and he did well because he can pass).

Or when you have very good passing big's.

If I remember correctly, in an attempt to get easy baskets for a team that lacked players that could get their own shot, the Nets ran a version of the Princeton offense while J. Kidd was there.

I think they would run some sets utilizing the passing skills of Pau, and not put all the pressure of creating offense on their backcourt.

Princeton offense relies on everyone being good at passing, screening, and moving without the ball.

I don't think we do any of these particularly well.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)
