Default PFT: Report: Saints kept ledger detailing $1,000 payments for cart-offs

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...for-cart-offs/

As suspended Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma continues to spar with the NFL about the disclosure of evidence in the league’s bounty investigation, a new report details one piece of evidence that the league views as significant: A ledger showing payments to Saints players for meeting the goals of the bounty program.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports that the league has a “ledger” showing earnings for players in the bounty program, with $1,000 payments for cart-offs, $400 for hard hits and $100 deductions for mental errors.

Update: League revises its ledger leak

There can be little doubt that the NFL, which has refused to provide to the NFLPA or to the media evidence of the alleged bounty system in New Orleans, leaked to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports information regarding a ledger supposedly maintained by the Saints during the 2009 season.

There can now be little doubt that the NFL got its first leak wrong, requiring another leak to fix the first leak.

Cole initially reported that the ledger reveals that three $1,000 payments were made as a result of the Saints’ September 2009 game against the Bills. After PFT pointed out that four Bills were injured during the game and that three play defense, Cole’s report was revised to replace the game against the Bills with the November 8, 2009 game against Panthers.

“A source initially said the three $1,000 awards were given in Buffalo on Sept. 27, 2009, but that source and another source later corrected that report,” Cole writes.

Is it a big deal? Who knows. Cole’s source(s) may have simply misread the ledger.

Regardless, the Associated Press game story mentions only one Panthers player leaving the game due to injury: linebacker Thomas Davis.

Maybe the leak will once again be revised to reflect a game in which there were actually three offensive players who left with injuries.

    They kept records?

Did they think they would be audited over this.

They're more arrogant than the Pats.

Vilma needs to just give it up. He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Yeah it's pretty obvious that the NFL "accidentally" leaked this information to let the public know they have enough to throw away the key on Vilma if they really wanted to.

Apparently they wanted to make sure they kept track to claim it on their taxes.

PFT has lead the pack in the "Guilty until proven innocent" mentality about this whole situation. They probably did it. But this isn't really convincing.

The Saints either have a very terrible accountant or an incredibly good one.

Well, you can CHANCE lying to Roger Goodell (even though it will probably fail and then you will be banned for a year for lying to the commish). You REALLY shouldn't try lying to the IRS.....

Seems like a good enough place to post this:

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/80...-saints-was-ok

A second arbitrator has ruled that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has the authority to discipline four New Orleans Saints players for their roles in a bounty program.

The players' union claimed Goodell is prohibited from punishing players for any conduct before the CBA was signed last August. The union also sought to have player appeals heard by Art Shell and Ted Cottrell, who are jointly appointed by the league and union to review discipline handed out for on-field conduct.

But arbitrator Shyam Das ruled Friday that Goodell is entitled to hand out the punishment and hear any appeals in the matter.

In a statement released by the NFL, Das wrote that the provision waiver relied upon by the union "does not . . . constitute an agreement by the NFL that the Commissioner relinquishes authority to impose discipline for conduct detrimental occurring prior to the execution of the CBA on August 4, 2011."

It was the second victory for the NFL in grievances this week.

On Monday, Stephen Burbank, a University of Pennsylvania law professor, ruled that Goodell has the authority to discipline the players.

The NFLPA later said it would appeal Burbank's decision because it believes salary-cap violations are involved in the payment.

Goodell suspended Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season and teammate Will Smith for four games. Former Saints defensive end Anthony Hargrove, now with Green Bay, was suspended for eight games, while linebacker Scott Fujita, now with Cleveland, was docked three games.

Seems like the penalties were not steep enough IMO.
