UH OH qb controversy hahaha
I would think the Redskins intend to trade Kirk Cousins down the road and hope to get a first or second round pick...something like that. If that happens they will look brilliant for picking Cousins.
My guess is they are thinking he will show enough in preseason games or maybe they make the playoffs, sit RGIII, and play Cousins in the last game or two of the season. (maybe not next season)
I don't know if that is what they have in mind, i'm just speculating. I wouldn't have taken him if I was in their position but teams do go crazy for quarterbacks nowadays so if Cousins shows any sign of being a starting NFL QB there could very well be a team that gives some serious value down the road to get him.
I'm guessing their thought process went something like this: We need a backup QB, Grossman and Beck clearly suck, Cousins just wins, and if he shows something in the coming few preseasons we can deal him down the road. It's not a competition, RGIII should not be looking over his shoulder, it's likely they just thought he was the BPA. Beck has already been released, I would have to assume the Skins go into the season with RGIII as starter, Rex backing him up, and Cousins learning the NFL. The next year, Rex is probably gone and Cousins is the backup.
Folks - you don't draft a player in the hope that you can trade him 'sometime down the road'. You draft a player to help your team. Period.
It seems like a wasted pick to me, but we're talking about the Redskins here. They're always doing stupid things.
Certainly strange. Ends up looking smart if RG3 takes a huge hit on a run and misses some time, but I still prefer the Colts' method of drafting guys for your quarterback to throw to :P
It's not a wasted pick at all. It's bust insurance for RGIII. Nothing more.
Not a bad pick. Rex Grossman as a long-term backup is probably not realistic. Important thing for the Redkins is to manage expectations of Cousins.
Some of the comments in this thread crack me up considering all the crap the Colts went through from relying on one QB....
Regardless of that...
If any of you had to sit through John Beck or Sexy Rexy who is not so sexy....you would not object to any QB other then Beck or Rex backing up RG3.
I already said it wasn't a bad pick. It's bust insurance. Injury insurance works too.
I dont see how Kirk Cousins is injury/bust insurance. Kirk was good at MSU, but he's just not the guy I want to rely on being my back up with RG3 (who I think will be great) starting right away. I would much rather a more experienced back up. Kirk has a lot of work to do before he can be classified as injury/bust insurance.
I was a little confused by this pick as well. I think the kid can play, but you don't need a rookie for insurance. You get an aging vet that can come in and manage the game or games and not make rookie mistakes until your young stud is ready to go back in there.
I'm not saying they drafted Cousins to REPLACE Griffin in the event (unlikely) that he's a bust or injury prone. You're right in that they will probably keep or find a veteran to be the #2 guy. I'm saying that they will want a 3rd QB around to develop in that scenario. In all this time the Skins have been searching for a QB, they have had veteran stop gaps on the roster. What they haven't had is that guy to develop. I think they are looking at Cousins like Schaub or Matt Flynn. Have him on your team, teach him your system, if you need him at some point you have him, and if you don't, you can get something for him like Atlanta and Green Bay did. Not saying it's the right choice to make, but I think that's where they are with that decision.
Just a dumb pick. I'd be pissed if I were Cousins, cause he's not likely to play until his rookie contract is up or if RGIII gets hurt.
They passed on Massie, T. Redskins still needed some O-Line help. He is probably better than the guys they ended up picking.
WR wouldn't have been a bad idea either.
With the #3 pick in the 2015 draft, your Indiana Pacers!
I'm guessing they drafted Cousins because he's actually run a pro style offense and made progression reads and audibles before. Gonna be weird for the second pick in the draft to go into training camp with a fellow rookie as his QB mentor...
As I said earlier, he is a project, and one that hopefully works out as a backup QB. He is not competition, and RG3 knew the second the Redskins met with him he was and is the future.
I, for one, am just happy to see the Redskins actually have draft picks to use for a change.
This makes no sense this year. Plenty of other teams draft for depth, and they are geniuses. Lord forbid a team that has sucked at QB for ages actually try to fix that problem
The more astounding thought to me was the fact that they just dropped Jabar Gaffney, I know Gaffney isn't great but he lead them in receptions last year.
