I have to believe the reports are true as Mr. Bird does seem to have the record of leaving the audience wanting more.

As a player when it was time he stepped down. As a coach when it was time he stepped down. I believe Larry wants to step down both for medical reasons and his promise that he would leave the franchise in good shape. He's done that.

I'd love to see Donnie in some capacity with the organization, but not making decisions at that level.
And I believe that is being set up for Walsh at this time. Nothing says Donnie can not be a consultant.

The CBS article was pretty specific when it said that he had told his friends and Mr. Simon about him leaving. I really think it might be true. Of course he's going to deny right now since the team is headed to the playoffs. It probably has more to do with his back and health than anything else. He really seems to enjoy his job, but he just can't keep going with his back.
Im sorry but im confused...He's not actively competing and sits in a luxury box? What exactly is hurting his back? Its his mind we're after

He even said he liked having the trainers around. That should be a huge plus.

While I hope it isn't true....I'm starting to suspect it is. I love how the tone towards Bird has changed on this board the last few months. I have always been a bird supproter and believed in what he was trying to accomplish, but I have to admit he even lost me for a time towards the end of the JOB tenure. What a mess. But he did the right thing (FINALLY!!!) and then further did the right thing by making the obvious choice of hiring Vogel. Was Vogel the obvious choice.....to most of us. However, there are however many number of legendary front office men in all of sports who trip over there own egos and screw up the most obvious of choices.

As far as Larry's track record. When I look at it, it shows me a guy who has gotten better at his job over the years. As with anybody starting a new career there are bound to be missteps along the way......its called learning from experience. I think Larry has learned a TON and continues to get better. I would put him in the top 5 of GM's in the league. Maybe if Larry doesn't wish to continue as GM he has interest in buying the team. he has stated his desire for ownership of a franchise in the past and, while I love the hands-off style that Mel and Herb practiced over the years, I don't expect the next generation of Simons to have the same loyalty.

    David Sterns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you notice how many games Ron Artest got as a member of the Lakers? How many do you think he would have received if he had still been a member of the Pacers?
Yes, David Stern did a shaft job on the Pacers concerning the brawl, but Stern didn't overpay Pacer players nor did he trade for those albatross contracts of Murphy and Dunleavy.

Artest would have been banned for life if he had been a Pacer. Stern took care of the primetime showtime Lakers. Did anyone think he wouldn't?

Well, no, he sits in a regular seat during games.

And he uses a regular desk when he is working.

And sitting is just as painful with a bad back as standing.

Say what you want about the man, but he said playoffs by Year 3... Year 3 turned into the playoffs and Year 4 turned into the 3 Seed. Nobody can argue with that.

The timing, authors and language suggest that Donnie planted these stories.

    Way to go, Donnie.

Awesome of Larry to let all of those fans in his luxury box!

To be fair BLF is one big "luxury" box.
So he is kind of right.

So, what former ABA Pacer are they going to fire this time? Darnell? Billy?

In my personal case, sitting hurts a hell of a lot more than standing, especially sitting for long periods of time.

I like what Bird has done overall. Seth pointed out some of his big mistakes, but most GMs will have good and bad moves. Overall he has done a good job here. I am perplexed by he fact that he is walking away when the team is ready to make that leap in the playoffs. next year with a few moves could be a championship team. Surprised he would walk away from that.

I have to imagine they are going to promote Morway or Pritchard. I just do not see them bringing in a guy from the outside who will have his own vision. A GM from the outside will want his style and his guys.

The only thing missing from this picture is you with your shirt off next to Larry. That would be hanging up in my bedroom. And bathroom. And closet. And wall above my computer at work. And everywhere else I touch myself

Bird Denies Rumor Of Impending Departure

Larry Bird again denied reports that he will leave the Pacers at the end of the season.

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reported Thursday that Bird has told “several friends in the NBA that he’s decided to leave” and that he wants owner Herb Simon to start planning for him to step away at the end of the season.

“Once again, no decision has been made,” Bird said by phone Thursday evening. “I’ll sit down with my owner at the end of the season and we’ll talk about things.”

Bird's done plenty that in hindsight I didn't like. And plenty that I didn't like beforehand (letting Jack go, JOb's extra year). But the position the team's in now, the players he's added, the vision he seems to have for this team....

I hope he sticks around. Biggest fear is that someone without his patience will take over and ruin things.

Why does every thread about Bird go into slamming Donnie? He did a lot more good than bad.
