Eight Points, Nine Seconds Preview Review:
Jared Wade: Indy JV Squad Beats Detroit

What happened in this game is largely irrelevant. It was a glorified exhibition
that dozens of fans in Bankers Life Fieldhouse got to see their favorite team
win. But I think it was an excellent penultimate game of the regular season
for the Pacers both physically and psychologically.

The physical part is obvious: George Hill and Danny Granger were both a
little banged up and they didn’t have to play while Roy Hibbert is a giant
human being who got to rest (and certainly has some bumps and bruises of
his own). In order to get out of the second round, Indiana will need to play
four near- perfect games, and for this roster, that means high-level
contributions from at least seven, if not more like nine, guys. So the better
everyone’s body feels, the better chance — in theory — they have of
    making that happen.

The second part is psychological. And it’s probably more important.

Again, to exceed expectations, Indiana needs everyone to play well. And
given their lack of superstar power, it will also help if everyone is of a
similar “us against the world” mentality. The most potentially delicate
balance in that regard is the fact that the team just demoted its starting
point guard. Frank Vogel needs that to be a decision Darren Collison can live
with while still contributing. Hopefully, by keeping DC coming off the bench
tonight, Vogel showed him that this move is less a demotion and more about
optimizing the personnel and having a high-functioning second unit. That
could help him truly believe, even if ever so slightly, that this is similar to
the roles accepted by guys like Manu in San Antonio, Ray Allen in Boston,
Jamal Crawford in Atlanta, Lamar Odom in Los Angeles. It’s just what is the
best role for him to take as this team heads into the playoffs. (Although the
team is really going to need him to play better in said role once the regular
season ends. Yikes. He was ugly out there.)

Second, it’s great to get minutes for AJ Price, Jeff Pendergraph, Kyrylo
Fesenko and Dahntay Jones, who himself was formally demoted out of the
playoff rotation recently. These guys, with perhaps the exception of Jones,
likely won’t have any significant on-court impact on the playoffs. But they
are members of this team and will be there for all the shootarounds, plane
trips and halftime speeches...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s

    Hoopspeak
Beckley Mason: The Bulls will beat you up to get shots

After thumping the Hawks by twenty in Atlanta, the Bulls are now a tidy 12-5
without superstar Derrick Rose. Today John Hollinger has noted that while the
Bulls are a murderous defensive club with or without Rose (something that
wasn’t nearly so true last season), they do miss his punch on offense. Still,
the Bulls score well enough to win. At the pace they’re on, the Bulls would be
expected to be a 58 win team even without Rose. How are they performing so
well even without their unquestioned offensive engine?

One reason is that C.J. Watson is a serviceable starting point guard. He’s not
Rose, but his PER has risen to a respectable 15.0, he’s shooting 43 percent on
3′s and he’s a terrific defender. John Lucas III is small, not very quick and an
obvious weakpoint on the defensive end, but damn can he shoot. As a back
up’s back up, you could do a whole lot worse.

But a underlying strength of the Bulls offense (with or without Rose) is that
they do all sorts of things to “create” shots that don’t involve a prototypical
shot creator. There’s nothing simpler than letting Rose torch his man off the
dribble then kick out to an open teammate, but when we expand the
definition of “shot creator” to include more subtle methods, we see that
less-heralded Bulls do plenty in this regard.

To start, the big guys set brutal screens, and the wings are excellent at
creating space and making good decisions off of these screens. Effective
screening is one of the most underrated and under-emphasized skills in the
NBA. Too often players are looking to slip to their own shot, or simply don’t
do enough to generate as much contact as possible–because that’s what a
screen is all about: physically dislodging a defender from his charge.

Joakim Noah seeks contact all over the court and relishes any chance to
scrape a defender off one of his curling teammates. Chicago’s most skilled
big man, Carlos Boozer, is also an excellent screener. Not only does he get
in an almost comically wide stance to set them, but he’s smart when working
off the screen and makes excellent...CONTINUE READING AT HOOPSPEAK

I hope that we see more than 10 minutes of Fesenko.

But I also hope that we beat them. We have to win at least 1 series versus an Eastern playoff team. It would be nice if this 1 series was the one versus the Bulls

    Mike Wells ‏ @MikeWellsNBA

It may be a meaningless game in the standings, but Vogel plans to go w his starters minus Granger n @KCJHoop says Thibodeau will do the same
Having clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference while sitting idle the last few days, the Chicago Bulls could use the next game to rest Derrick Rose and Luol Deng before the playoffs.

However, coach Tom Thibodeau hinted earlier this week that might not happen.

I'm hoping for big nights from Hibby, West, and PG for the win.

Moments later, the Bulls: "Wait, we play the Pacers wednesday??? **** them we're playing everybody"

Pacers: "yeah seriously, **** the Bulls, we're playing our starters, we'll have time for rest later"

Chicago may have clinched 1st in the East, but they are going for HCA in the Finals as well if it comes to that, they are going to try to win this one, a win wouldn't be meaningless, and would be impressive without Danny.

Hopefully Paul can explode offensively again and mediate the loss a bit.

I dunno, keeping up a routine and not getting rusty is pretty big too, West would hardly sit if Frank told him too, and Roy is the same way, plus Danny is sitting.
