In your opinion, what makes someone worthy of the title "true fan" I'm curious.
Generally, I don't like the distinction, but like many honorary titles, it only means something if other people give it to you.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

So you don't buy TBS as "The Superstation"?

I was there through all those years..... a lot of hours I won't get back.
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

I think we're burying the lead here. I'd love for anyone to explain to me how being a pacer fan at any point in the last 35 years could be considered "glory hunting"....

I've been on and off over the years mostly dealing with not liking the Ron Artest years (pre-brawl that is, I just didn't like Artest) and deployments to Iraq when I didn't get to watch. I was finally out of the Marine Corps right before the 2010 draft. Reading all about potential drafty Paul George, and him working out with Danny Granger had me caught, hook line and sinker. Though a lot of that really had to do with me finally being home and in my apartment were I could actually watch sports on the regular again.

I don't know about their Pacer watching habits but I know Sweabs and LA left for other reasons.

Well its pretty simple, if you are the type who basically abandons your team because they suck, and then return to the team because they are really good again. Well you are glory hunting. Doesn't mean you aren't a fan, you just aren't a true fan. True fans do not abandon ship because of suckitude. That doesn't mean you have to go to games and watch a terrible product but you should at least be following the team and catching games on TV if available to you.

Also just because you are a glory hunter does not mean you find glory. if that what you mean about the Pacers who haven't won a title in 35 years.

I have always been an Indiana sports fan. However I purchased league pass for the first time the year prior to the brawl. Prior to that I watched playoff games and nationally televised stuff. so I have been a big fan primarily through the tough times.

A bit off topic, but where is P4E? One of my favorite posters. Despite poor grammar, I appreciate his basketball insights.

I've been a loyal follower of the Colts and Pacers year in and year out. If I'm able to watch a game, I watch it. My following of the Pacers did dwindle after the brawl but it was primarily due to my college not having FSN...despite being in Indiana. But I still was at fault for not paying close attention to them. I'll admit that my interest piked up greatly when we made the huge trade with Toronto a few years back and started purging the old team. That's when I started to avidly track them again like I used to.

    yeah, real funny...

lol, I actually did laugh. It was a nice burn.

I do agree with you about people who label themselves as "true fans." It's a completely arbitrary title, and just sounds petty when self applied. Each person has their own reasons to be a fan, stick it out, or cut ties and I don't think it's ever for one person to judge another's fandom.

There have been some names mentioned in this thread that I miss seeing. LA and ChicagoJ were great posters. I'm sure there are others too.

PFFL was mentioned, and I'd like to confirm that he left well before the JOB era. He "went PFFL" before I even joined because I remember asking what it meant to "go PFFL," lol.

If I remember correctly, we also lost a poster named Heywoode from frustration with the team.

EDIT: I did not remember correctly...not sure who I'm thinking of then...

I went to more games in each of the last 3 or 4 seasons than I've been able to go to this year, and watched a lot more on TV then too. School and working being the cause. Which really sucks, because this is the year I've been waiting so long for lol

First came to this board and the Pacers when Danny was drafted. Didn't register til last year so I could keep reading during the playoffs. Needed my daily fix.

Probably have stuck through it more because of the quality of this board than the quality of the team. JoB-ball got really hard to watch.

Like many of you though, I thought I saw something in Frank. Don't know if it was the excitement and or the fact he is pretty good guy. That and the front office moves gave me hope that things would get better. Must have, I drove 1200 miles this week to see the Pacers first hand. Glad I did. Glad y'all are still here too. The future looks to be fun.

I discovered the Pacers in '02 but never watched a game (I was a small kid and no one told me what channel they played on) Instead I followed the games on the Pacers site. On November 19, 2004 I watched my first Pacers game on TV.... and stuck with it all these years. I've missed about a total of 6 games over the past 8 years.

Call me weird but ever since we traded JO is when I went from causal fan to hardcore even though that was the start of the suckfest. It also coincided with a breakup of mine so maybe that's why I got so into it. Either way I was so excited to see fresh young faces that had a chance to be good. I'll admit I thought hibbert was too slow and never expected him to be this good when we drafted him. I also thought danny couldn't be the first option on a winning team.

Most of all I love watching winning players develop and have them prove me wrong. That's why I love this team.

I used to order NBA LP every year, Jim O'Brien killed that for me. I still follow all the games as much as I can(check play-by-plays, sometimes find a website to watch them on, and so on), but Jim O'Brien ruined Pacers basketball for me far more than the brawl did.

Jim O'Brien was the worst coach I have seen in any sport in my entire life. A coach should not be able to dictate the outcome of a game like he did.
