OT: Indiana (IU) Offers Scholarship To Eighth Grader

    Apr 17, 2012 10:45 AM EDT

Tom Crean has offered a scholarship to 8th grade phenom Eron Gordon.

Gordon, the youngest brother of former Indiana Hoosiers and current New Orleans Hornets star guard Eric Gordon, is also being recruited by Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Xavier and Wisconsin.

"He's the definition of an 'attack-the-basket' type of guard," said Pat Mullin, his AAU travel coach.

How old is an 8th grader usually? How old is Eron?

The highlights look good but his shooting form is weird. I suppose that it will get better in college.

    He's either 13 or 14 years old.

And i agree; he shoots strangely. Ball way out in front and he doesn't really jump.

I'm surprised the NCAA still allows this. No school should be recruiting kids that aren't even in high school. No kid should be thinking about where he is playing college ball at that age either. Just go play basketball and be a 13 year old. He is 5 years away from college. So much will change in 5 years.

Yeah, I don't see where this is news. Hell, it's not the first time IU has done this under Crean.

True- he offered Trey Lyles, James Blackmon, and Jalen Coleman before they played a game of HS ball. If the kids' parents are Ok with it then I don't see what the problem is. The kid doesn't have to accept, hell he doesn't have to do anything.

I think the point is not that he has to, but that he doesn't really know whether or not he should in the 8th grade. It is a pretty important choice. It isn't even about iu, I just don't care for this. Nothing overly wrong with it, just don't care for it.

Didn't Bobby Vaden commit to Purdue when he was an 8th grader?

Again, this is a non-issue. An eight grader is well aware of what a college scholarship offer means and in the unlikely event they don't, their parents certainly do. Crean wouldn't offer an eight grader without the family's consent. You can bet Eric is happy with this.

My question to IU fans about this is what I would ask just about any team in a weird situation: (answer honestly) If you replaced IU with UK what would your reaction to this be?

As a stand alone matter it would elicit no reaction. But UK has a long history of shady recruiting practices so anything they do in that area is greeted with skepticism by IU fans and deservedly so.

I don't particularly think it is an issue, but I certainly don't think you know what you want to do with your college education in 8th grade, nor do your parents. To be fair, they probably don't care about the education, but a crap ton can change in 4 years.

Even from a school's point of view, a lot can change if 4 years. you can have a whole class come through your school. A player could not be nearly as good in high school as middle school.

I think it is more peculiar/silly than wrong.

No players even sign anything until they're a senior anyway. So it means nothing, and if he says outloud in public that he accepts, it still means nothing. Not until the pen meets the paper and that's not until you're a senior anyway.

Purdue's going to offer him on his visit next week. I'll be shocked if they don't.

The same. Billy Gillespie did it when he was the UK coach I remember. It was whatever.

Yeah, I mean as soon as kids start playing AAU ball they start getting put into a system, the ones that get the early recognition are the ones with height, and that can score.

I once asked a guy on ESPN why it is that IU and PU have guys committing so far in advance, and that this makes them miss out on some good guys in the end, more PU than IU, but he said that Indiana(the state) is a tough place to keep recruits and that Painter sees what he wants and goes after it, and that it has worked for him so far.

Also non of these are official like someone else said so it really does not matter until they sign their LOI, interesting note, neither PU or IU really has that many players that sign their freshman or sophomore year that do not end up playing for that school.
    Why so SERIOUS

The difference is, with UK we would be checking out the driveway the next day to see what new car the parents were driving.

To be honest, though, I am not a fan of such early offers. Was it his first offer? It's too bad the "they have been interested consistently for the longest time" factor is important in a kid's decision.

The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

Didn't Knight talk about Bailey when he was in 8th grade?
