    Default Do you play basketball?

So, I was curious to know if any of the posters here played basketball.

Personally, I used to play basketball when younger and still play when I have the time. I was in my local team's youth academy for 10 years (6 to 16).

When I was 18, I shattered my knee (torn PCL, LCL and Meniscus) and I'm still not completely over it at 21. I like to play basketball as much as I can but my knee often buckles.

Anyway, what was your playing style when you played?

Currently, I am 6'0" and 211 lbs but when I played I was more like 5'11" (I've barely grown since I stopped playing basketball) and 180 lbs.

I played as an undersized PF in our academies. My size was closer to a SF but I was (still am) a poor shooter and a poor offensive player in general. I loved grabbing boards (still love) and playing defense (it's much harder now due to no lateral movement thanks to my injury) and also was a willing passer.

    So, that's it for me.

    What are your experiences?

Default Re: Do you play basketball?

I played basketball from 6th-8th grade or about 11-13 years old. It was for my catholic school team and anyone that tried out made the team. I am admittedly one of the worst basketball players you will ever see. I was always one of the shortest players in the "league", at about 4'7" to 5'1", but since I was not good enough at handling the ball to play PG (at the time I really couldn't even dribble with my off hand) I played all my minutes at SG. I couldn't dribble, shoot, rebound, block shots or steal the ball worth a darn, but I was a fairly good passer and my only real strength was my ability to stay on my defender.

In my 3 years of playing, I think it was 34 games total, I scored 3 points! I was about 1-20 from the field and 1-4 from the free throw line. I actually played a good amount of minutes, about half the game, but that was mostly because our teams had only 7 or 8 players, and aside from having by far the best player in the league, the rest of our team wasn't very good.

Because our team had the best player in the league our record was actually pretty good. In 6th grade I think we were 4-5 in the regular season, but won all 3 tournament games to win the championship. In 7th grade I think we were 8-1 in the regular season, and won our 3 tournament games to repeat as champions. In 8th grade I think we were 6-3 in the regular season, but lost our first tournament game. Overall 18-9 in the regular season and 6-1 in the tournament, for a grand total of 24-10.

Nobody might care to read this, but I am posting it mostly for me. I'm writing it all down while I can remember most of it, and in the future, I can look back on it and reminisce...

Always played for fun since high school, never been that great. I think of myself as a Lou Amundson. Fairly tall, but undersized in reality, little offense, and hustle. Minus the ponytail.

No sports for me really. I played baseball and basketball between 4th and 6th grade but I was more into WWF and video games. It wasn't until a around 6th grade or a year after that I really took into sports. Would go boating and jetskiing with the family during the summer and would find myself in a family-friend's camper watching Pacers playoff games. That's when I started to love sports in general. I got into caring about sports/playing them too late so I stopped going out for organized sports but I did start running all the time, lifting weights and playing basketball with friends on the basketball team(usually 21). I just really took a love for sports and became competitive. Unfortunately, I had a spinal cord injury and I don't even get to play for fun anymore.

Not that much anymore. I have bad knees, ankle, hip and shoulder from injuries in the military. I played a lot of b-ball in the military playing pick up ball on the weekend and playing on our company team. I was more of an undersized 2 guard stuck in a point guard body that everyone tried to make me be. Finally someone recognized that and I ended up playing 2 guard. I was a very streaky shooter and when I was hot it was like throwing the ball into the ocean. The good thing for our company team we had another guy almost just like me and we rotated in whoever was hot that night. The last six months of my military career I had to watch on the bench because I had torn my ACL showing off dunking the ball. I came down awkward and it sounded like a firecracker going off to me. I had two options then was to have surgery or not have surgery and go through physical therapy and brace the knee. Still today I have not had the surgery and that is considered my good knee because the other has degenerative arthritis. I play every once ina while when we go camping but more playing horse with the nephews. It's always fun to take the nephews out and whoop them at some horse.

I enjoy playing basketball.. Never played it as an organized sport, just played for fun. I'm skinny at only about 162 lbs, but standing at 6'4 I normally played more of a "Center" position.. I have great defense, blocking shots and making people miss. But my "in game" offense is not very good.. I can make a lot of shots in a shootaround but I tend to miss them in game, so i tend to pass more so than want to shoot it. It really depends on who is guarding me on how confident I am, but for some reason I think I rush things when im on offense in a game and miss a lot of shots I know I can make. I'm quick for a tall guy but often times am not confident enough in my ability to drive on offense because I feel like im not a good dribbler. My best aspects are my defense, hustle and passing. I need a scorer on my team to be the most effective, I don't like to be relied on for much offense even tho I'm solid when I tell myself to be agressive and not worry about if a shot goes in or not, just keep going hard..

My offense is very inconsistant, I've had a few "He's on fire" games where I feel so good I just shake my head at ppl trying to stop me.. But I've had more games where I struggle to get my shot to fall and begin to play more of a passive style of offense and just make sure I play tough hard nosed defense.

I haven't play organized ball since I was in 6th grade. I've done the occasional pickup game, but after I REALLY screwed up both knees playing football in college (already having moved to the radio booth for high school basketball ), my game (which wasn't all that much to begin with) has never recovered, so I'm pretty much limited to shooting around and the occasional Area55 vs PFOL game.

My game was pretty much Lou Amendson style crossed with a pass first PG-offensively (I even BRICK my free throws the same way he does! ) and all out hustle on the defensive side.

I've been playing basketball since the 6th grade. My high school was one of the smallest in the state of Wisconsin with under 100 students total, so anyone that wanted to join the team made it. I played center in high school as I was one of the tallest people in my school (6'5''). My junior year I was an honorable mention all-conference and my senior year I was a selected to the all-conference first team. Despite my school being tiny we always had really good teams (probably due to our coaches). We won our regionals my sophomore and junior year, but lost in the first round of sectionals each year. My senior year I broke a finger and both my big toes over the course of the season which contributed to my team losing our first game in regionals. I went on to play at Ripon College for two years after high school. During my freshman year my coaches started transitioning me into playing the SF position, so I didn't get much playing time since I was so inexperienced there. Then over the summer after my freshman year I tore my ACL, which caused me to miss my entire sophomore season. Now I am transferring out to Academy of Art University in California and will be playing ball there. I currently am 6'6'' and 230lb and can play any position, so I'm excited

Thanks! And yes, I am fully recovered. I had a great surgeon and was dedicated with my rehab so I actually was close to 100% after 5 months.

    That's great, man

For me, it's been over 3 years and I'm still not 100%. Of course, it was not only an ACL

Yeah, I also tore the outside rim of my lateral meniscus, but since the tear was so close to the edge of the meniscus it was able to heal by itself. All in all I got pretty damm lucky, especially given context of the situation I was in when I tore it. I had been playing ball on an outside court that had gravel all over the blacktop (which I stupidly hadn't cleared off), and while I wasn't playing hard, when I tried to do a change of direction move my foot slide on the gravel a good 3 feet and my knee twisted about 45 degrees in a direction it was not suppose too. I was scared as hell that I had just ended my playing career when it happened. Just a month prior to my incident I had watched one of my teammates completely blow out his knee and have his playing career end when he got fouled on a dunk during a scrimmage, and his fall hadn't looked nearly as bad as mine.

I played basketball in 6-8th grade and was mostly used to foul the hell out of the other team's best player. It was done under the pretense of "playing good defense" (I was actually a good defender) but hard fouling was considered a part of that. As bad as I was at offense, I miraculously was able to score like 20 points in my 3 year career, but it was mostly in mop up duty against weaker teams. I probably haven't touched a basketball in 3 years, but I run to stay in shape.

I play with my church. I am usually a center. I am the tallest one there at 6'2'' and 250 lbs. My post game is awesome and I can rebound a bit, but I can't defend for anything.

I play for fun when I can, but that is exceedingly rare these days. I have moved around so much the past couple of years that it has been difficult to find people to play with and places to play at. When I play, I tend not to be very good either. Being somewhere in the neighborhood of 5'10 145 lbs makes it an uphill battle

I haven't played regularly in a few years. Since I now have two young kids at home, I rarely have time to do anything during the day except working. When I was at my best, I was a pretty consistent shooter from the wings and elbows, but I'm relatively small (5'9, 165) so I was never much of a rebounder or defender. Once my kids get a little older and more self-sufficient, I'm hoping to play a few times a week at the gym after work.

Played throughout high school, got some interest in some mid-majors and had a few offers from some DII and DIII schools, but decided to stay home.

Played multiple times a week at the rec. center at BSU, along with a couple different leagues in the area. One up in Portland (Jay County), one in Winchester, one here in Muncie. So for a couple of years I was playing 4-6 times a week pretty competitively.

About 3 years ago was playing pickup games on a Sunday at my HS. Got around my defender and went to the hole. I've always relied on my atheleticism, and this time as I cocked my arm back to take contact, my defender grabbed my arm and pulled me down making me land with my arm pinned under my lower back. I've never felt anything like lower back pain before in my life. Couldn't walk upright for a few days.

I've always been a little afraid of getting it taken care of. Dunno if it's a herniated disc or what, but I pretty much tweak it every time I play so I've hung up my shoes for all intent and purposes.

I'm 6'1" 215-220 right now, but when I play I'm 190-200. Play both the 1 and 2 depending on who's running with me. Always a streaky shooter from outside, but before my back problems, getting into the lane and then using my legs to get clean looks was my staple. Now that I can't jump like I used too, I've lost pretty much all interest in playing. It's too frustrating to try to do the things you used to be able to do, and the only result is embarassment and pain.

I will never say a bad word about anyone who's dealing with back problems. The fact that Foster/Bird/etc could get multiple years out of a bad back, at the level at which they play in the NBA, is just remarkable to me. Feeling like a 90y/o man at the age of 23 wasn't something I was planning on. It's a new found respect for guys that can bite the bullet to do the thing they love, knowing how much pain and damage they've gone through.

True. This is exactly why I cannot tell anything about someone with an ACL tear. You will always relate easier to the people that had a similar injury of yours.

I used to play almost everyday when I was younger, but just with people in my neighborhood. I certainly wasn't a world beater, but I always enjoyed just playing with my friends and beating my little (big) brother. I used to be able to jump just as high as my brother who had 4-5 inches on me, which I never understood.

I got into playing again after I got out of basic while I was in tech school and then again when I got to my first base. I'll never forget the one time when I out rebounded a guy who was close to 7 feet. I took a shot and I knew it was off the second I released it and instantly got pissed. Then ran as hard as I could and jumped as hard as I could and snagged the board from him. Needless to say, he wasn't very happy about it.

After I moved back to Indy, I had to work so much that I could never start playing again and then my back finally had enough with everything.

I'm with you man, I'm 30 and I've been going to back doctors for too long. I've always had back problems, but in the last 4 years it's just gotten worse almost everyday. The last doctor I saw said just from looking at my MRI's he would guess that I'm in my mid to late 70's. I've had the shots and a surgery when the shots stopped working and I really haven't been the same since. I've only tried to play once since then just to get some anger out. Sadly, that will probably be the last game I'll ever play.

I would if we can actually get a decent amount of people in the same area interested.

I was the starting point guard on my team in middle school, even though I was the second tallest person.. I could handle and pass well. Never tried out in high school, just focused on grades and job, never would've made Varsity or anything I don't think. I'm more of an inside player, I have decent moves inside but I'm only about 6' 2 or a bit shorter and not big, so I rely on finesse type of shots. I always liked to play big though, because a lot of my bigger friends are soft haha. I play a decent amount now too, when I'm not in class or at work. I play at Sahm's park weekly-ish. There are some hoopers over there occasionally.

In the offseason I play random pick up games, but I always get picked last. They always look at me as that white and nerdy kid. "He can't ball". Lol I end up whooping there *** every time.

i used to but, i got tired of the jammed fingers and twisted ankles. i decided they weren't paying me enough ( ok "they" didn't exist and "they" never paid me a dime) to put myself through this kind of abuse so i retired.

I play a couple of times a week--just pick up hoops with guys at the gym or colleagues. I'd characterize my game as a homeless man's Darren Collison.
