Default David West: 10 million dollar man?

The odd thoughts for the Min game kinda got derailed into a David West discussion, so in an attempt to shift that discussion away from that and to get a better idea of what others opinion was on the subject I am making this poll.

I personally think it is just the right size...

West was up against Anthony Randolph (who has the figure of a 2 by 4), Beasley and Williams (who are both pretty bad defenders). West was expected to put up at least 20 points.

I'm glad his contract is only 2 years. Personally, I think we're overpaying him, but given the length of his contract, we're not stuck with his contract for too much longer

$10 mil is about $2-3 mil too much imo.

I had a hard time deciding.. Ultimately, I can deal with 10 million, but I would rather have him for about 8.5 mil.

10 Million over two years? All freakin' day. Heck on a two year salary I would have probably given him 12 million a year.

As one who really would have preferred going into free agency that we sign someone else, D-West has been worth every penny of his contract. And not just on the court.

Based on his stats it is too much...

Based on his stats and locker room presence it is just right...

Clearly, the big difference maker this season.

He is so fundamental to setting the tone of "team play".

He can go to work anytime the team needs him to.

He definitely is the primary calming, stabilizing presence to our youngsters.

How many games throughout the year have you thought "Man West was such a disappointment"? Right.

All for 20 million over 2 years? Giddy up.

You can pick apart his individual contributions and say that he's perhaps a 8-9 mil/year value per his stats, etc... but please, don't try to tell me that the playoff experience that our young guys are about to get will have no value, and that he wasn't an investment towards their future as well?

I think he is probably one of the more responsible for the fact that we often have 5-7 players in double digits every game.

This "pick your poison" offense that's emerging is going to be a real threat to all teams. He's right at the core of that.

    I believe.

He may not be a 10 million dollar basketball player, but to answer the OP, David West is definitely a 10 million dollar Man.

Remember, the guy's coming off a pretty major knee injury. He's about 12 and a half months from an ACL tear. And as far as the numbers, sure you'd like them to be a bit higher, but he's playing the least amount of minutes since his 3rd year in the league, by a pretty good chunk (29mpg this year, 34 is the next lowest after becoming a big contributor). Per minute wise his scoring's down, thanks to a BIG usage rate drop, but everything else is right in line with his career numbers.

I expect pretty big things from him the rest of the way this season and all next year. I think next year 10 mil's going to feel like a bargain. Or not, but hey we'll see.

Plus DWest is just kinda a no nonsense kinda mean, I dig it. Has some Dale Davis in him.

I watch stuff close, dynamics of interactions after the whistle.

Big Baby Davis earlier in the year, trying to get physical... DWest hard fouls him says "what you got to say now". Big Baby shuts up.

Illyasova a couple of nights ago, got away with what DWest thought was a foul, he steps to the jump circle and gives him a little sideways bump, ref comes in and warns him to settle down.

DWest is amped up after getting fouled by Tristan Thompson at one end Atwain Jamison tells the ref to watch him, DWest pops Tristan while taking it to the hoop. TT gets mad plays later, DWest tells him to shut up (or something along those lines).

DWest pops Dunleavy, probably something to do with him cheap shotting Tyler from the previous game.

I mean teams are getting mad at the Pacers because they aren't getting pushed around anymore. Other teams maybe aren't scared of David West, but they respect him. The Bulls should have signed him instead of Boozer, DWest would protect Drose in a way.

Lastly, if DWest was on a bad team, and played selfish, he could average 25 and 10 (knee holding up pending). Would he be worth more then?

I think his best it yet to come, too, when it counts, in the playoffs.

So is 12 and 7 worth 10 million, probably not, but 39-22 sure as hell is and he's a HUGE reason for that, imo.

We have space. He brings stats and intangibles. Worth it IMO.

This is where I think got screwed up: the price of a player is majorly decided by stats. While it's not entirely wrong, it usually ends up players valuing their own stats for their own market value than prioritizing winning basketball. So you see guys stat-padding during their free agency to land a lucrative contract then after that...meh.

Anyway, I always value wins more than stats, and David West has earned every cent in his 1st year on his contract IMO. He has been one of the major factors in many of the Pacers' wins, including hitting clutch shots in the early part of the season. People complain about Murphy getting "empty stats" that lets him get his lucrative contract while the team is not winning. And yet people still complain about West not getting the "desirable" stats, but his team is winning basketball games and currently a 3-seed in the East. Just ask Roy Hibbert on how David West has helped his game and probably you'll be convinced that he's worth $10M per year.

Invaluable. Like in the other thread, we don't need him to be a stat stuffer. He needs to be out there and dominant in the paint, and tough. He needs to be the leader of this team in the locker room.

I said we could pay him more. Of course he/his agent settled for 10/yr for two years. Fine by me. I'm glad we took him over Nene. Best FA signing since Byron Scott. (Sam Perkins helped, but he was at the tail end of his career.)

Yes. West is worth the $$. I could care less about his stats. The NBA is a man's league, and David is a grown man. He gives us along with Roy two legitimate post options. West was the best off-season fa signing in the NBA. Thanks Larry for getting this guy on the Pacers.

The bold here is what people are completely missing.

People knocking his stats must really be lacking in any sort of big picture sense. The only reason West is scoring less is because he is taking less shots, precisely because he has bought into the team concept. I can't even count the number of times the dude has carried us offensively when we went into some kind of offensive slump. This is not even to mention intangibles.

You want a stat that reflects West's impact? Check out our win loss record. We're better primarily because of David West.

For what he gives you on a nightly basis, I say he is definitely over paid.

But add in his leadership, I think he's been worth it.

It's only a 2 year contract, so it's not that bad. I would love if he resigned for a much lower amount. He'd be a great vet to have come off the bench. However, I don't think he'll want to be a backup yet or take less money. We'll see though!

He brings things to the table that were sorely lacking with this team. I just hope they keep him on throughout the rest of his career. That kind of leadership is difficult to come by.

Like I said on the other thread lets hope we don't have to go small on the playoffs because he can't guard his guy, like Danny I hope he proves me wrong and starts to kick some azz but so far he is getting overpay.
