Default David West: 10 million dollar man?

The odd thoughts for the Min game kinda got derailed into a David West discussion, so in an attempt to shift that discussion away from that and to get a better idea of what others opinion was on the subject I am making this poll.

I personally think it is just the right size...

West was up against Anthony Randolph (who has the figure of a 2 by 4), Beasley and Williams (who are both pretty bad defenders). West was expected to put up at least 20 points.

I'm glad his contract is only 2 years. Personally, I think we're overpaying him, but given the length of his contract, we're not stuck with his contract for too much longer

$10 mil is about $2-3 mil too much imo.

He may not be a 10 million dollar basketball player, but to answer the OP, David West is definitely a 10 million dollar Man.

I had a hard time deciding.. Ultimately, I can deal with 10 million, but I would rather have him for about 8.5 mil.

10 Million over two years? All freakin' day. Heck on a two year salary I would have probably given him 12 million a year.

Yes. West is worth the $$. I could care less about his stats. The NBA is a man's league, and David is a grown man. He gives us along with Roy two legitimate post options. West was the best off-season fa signing in the NBA. Thanks Larry for getting this guy on the Pacers.

Like I said on the other thread lets hope we don't have to go small on the playoffs because he can't guard his guy, like Danny I hope he proves me wrong and starts to kick some azz but so far he is getting overpay.

    Thought this was worth quoting.

You wouldn't have forked out an extra 2 million a year over the next 2 years to get West? What else would you have spent that money on?

I just want to know a better scenario besides signing West to his current contract. What player, for what amount of money would of been a better move, that gave us a better record and more flexibility?

The Pacers record is good for 5th in the NBA while being 22nd in payroll. Sounds like pretty good value to me.

Humpries one year and 8mil is a way better deal.

Yeah, I remember you clamoring for him during the offseason and saying you expected him to really break out this year. Maybe you could post a link to that conversation?

People only worried about his knees. Teams see his health now and apart from age he'll likely see a bigger contract on the next market.

    He's worth a bit more than 10m.

I mean what is this idea that he's ONLY doing this to Randolph? Who HAS stopped West this year? Anyone?

The Pacers mix it up and go to Roy and Danny a lot, also try to keep DC and Hill with touches. Barbosa and Tyler get some sets run for them. And before you know it that's all your touches.

    He's only taking 12.9 shots per 36
    Danny 16.4
    Barbosa 15.2
    Hibbert 12.5
    Tyler 11.8
    Paul 11.7
    Hill 10.7

He's at 48.4%. He and Roy are by far the most reliable inside scorers and both are attacking double and sometimes triple teams.

As one who really would have preferred going into free agency that we sign someone else, D-West has been worth every penny of his contract. And not just on the court.

Based on his stats it is too much...

Based on his stats and locker room presence it is just right...

Clearly, the big difference maker this season.

He is so fundamental to setting the tone of "team play".

He can go to work anytime the team needs him to.

He definitely is the primary calming, stabilizing presence to our youngsters.

How many games throughout the year have you thought "Man West was such a disappointment"? Right.

All for 20 million over 2 years? Giddy up.

You can pick apart his individual contributions and say that he's perhaps a 8-9 mil/year value per his stats, etc... but please, don't try to tell me that the playoff experience that our young guys are about to get will have no value, and that he wasn't an investment towards their future as well?

I think he is probably one of the more responsible for the fact that we often have 5-7 players in double digits every game.

This "pick your poison" offense that's emerging is going to be a real threat to all teams. He's right at the core of that.

    I believe.

Are his stats worthy of $10 million/year? No.

Is David West worth $10 million/year to the Pacers? Yes.

It's not quite been a month yet, but I still thought it was worth a bump.

He has been extemely valuable to us against Orlando so far, but I would have saved the bump for after Miami. No worries though...

Remember, the guy's coming off a pretty major knee injury. He's about 12 and a half months from an ACL tear. And as far as the numbers, sure you'd like them to be a bit higher, but he's playing the least amount of minutes since his 3rd year in the league, by a pretty good chunk (29mpg this year, 34 is the next lowest after becoming a big contributor). Per minute wise his scoring's down, thanks to a BIG usage rate drop, but everything else is right in line with his career numbers.

I expect pretty big things from him the rest of the way this season and all next year. I think next year 10 mil's going to feel like a bargain. Or not, but hey we'll see.

The bold here is what people are completely missing.

People knocking his stats must really be lacking in any sort of big picture sense. The only reason West is scoring less is because he is taking less shots, precisely because he has bought into the team concept. I can't even count the number of times the dude has carried us offensively when we went into some kind of offensive slump. This is not even to mention intangibles.

You want a stat that reflects West's impact? Check out our win loss record. We're better primarily because of David West.
