Default 2012 NBA Playoffs: (1) San Antonio vs. (8) Utah

A testament to this crazy season that it wasn't until 48 hours left that we got our first cemented series.

At first glance, this looks like another tough matchup for the Spurs. Utah arguably has a deeper frontline than last year's grizzlies, albeit not as top-heavy just yet.

Unfortunately, there is no Mike Conley, Shane Battier or Tony Allen on this Jazz team to deal with the likes of Parker and Ginobili, and that's where San Antonio generates 2/3 of their offense from nowadays. I'm sensing a Spurs sweep.

This matchup isn't set in stone yet. Denver could still finish 8th in the West according to the playoff odds from basketball prospectus:

    http://www.basketballprospectus.com/...articleid=2206

BTW, for those who see the Indiana-Orlando chances at 100%, the authors explain that in practice it's not quite that high. The computers see Charlotte as so bad that they actually give them a 0% chance of beating Orlando tonight, which means that in the computer's mind there's no chance Orlando doesn't clinch.

oh for ****s sake....I was so focused on Dallas not finishing 8th, that i forgot to consider Denver.

Oh well, Denver isn't losing to Minnesota tomorrow.

Atlanta/Boston has been set for a few days now, just without home court determined. Not sure if you were aware of that.

I was, but I can't very well start a thread if I don't know who will have HCA. It could easily mean an extra 1-2 games before that series is over.

Apparently though, starting threads based on matchups that aren't even set yet is perfectly ok!

I always consider Ginobili as the x-factor that turns the Spurs team into title contenders. With Duncan and Parker playing at a very high level right now, I would be surprised if they didn't sweep Utah (or Denver, should they face them in the 1st round).

Jazz have the worst back court in the playoffs. I don't expect a sweep but I wouldn't be surprised by one.

I think the Jazz will play them well. They won't get blown out in all their loses. But the Spurs will win in 5 games.

I always like to grade each series based upon my interest in watching it. on a scale of 1-10. I would put this as a 4. This isn't one of the better first round series

Utah will have no answer for the Spurs backcourt. Sweep.

Utah's winning percentage (.538) equates to 44 wins in a normal, 82-game schedule.

San Antonio's winning percentage (.750) equates to 61-62 wins in a normal, 82-games schedule.

San Antonio was a 61-win team last year when they lost to the 46-win Grizzlies in the first round. So, going by regular-season records, this match-up is almost identical to last season's #1 vs. #8 seed.

The Spurs will still be the heavy favorites, obviously, but people should keep all of this in mind before they completely write Utah off.

I think the Jazz's frontcourt is talented, deep, and youthful enough to take a couple of wins from the Spurs, but probably not enough to win the series.

The Spurs seem like the favorites to win it all going into the playoffs. I like the Jazz team and Gordon and it would be great to see them be competitive.

I see this series kind of like the Bulls / Pacers from last year. Jazz can be proud if they play hard and win one game.
