Eight Points, Nine Seconds Preview Review:
    Jonathan Auping: Opportunity Knocking

What I’m about to point out may have seemed fairly obvious to some of you
for a few weeks now, but it has only become more apparent in the past
couple of days. The Indiana Pacers have a great opportunity to hold on to
the three seed in the East standings and potentially play a reeling and
    discombobulated Orlando Magic team.

The Pacers have a three-game lead over the Celtics with only six games left
to play and only three of those games against +.500 teams. Unless my weak
math skills have betrayed me that means that if the Pacers can manage to
win four of their remaining games then they will lock up the third seed.

But why is the third seed all of a sudden so very important? Because many
signs are pointing towards Orlando remaining in the sixth seed. And this
Orlando team is currently going in the exact opposite direction as the Pacers.
The Pacers have won eight of their last ten, while the Magic have lost seven
    of their last ten.

But it’s more than that. The Pacers have seemingly grown closer as a team
all season. They have remained an unselfish team and by all accounts seem
to be learning from the natural mistakes that are a part of becoming a
winning team. The Magic on the other hand, have been dragged through a
season by an indecisive superstar who demanded to be traded only to do a
complete 360. This was followed up only a couple weeks later with their
head coach, Stan Van Gundy, telling the press that Dwight Howard wanted
him fired only to have Dwight Howard enter the room moments later. Oh
and by the way, Stan Van Gundy will be their coach for the playoffs. I
started to feel awkward just writing those last two sentences and I’m not a
player in the locker room trying to play through all of this. And we wonder
why Jameer Nelson is having a bad season?

But perhaps the scariest news for Magic fans came recently when it was
announced that Dwight Howard will take the next two weeks off with a
herniated disc in his lower back. Sure, it’s good news that the disc is
supposedly “not fully-herniated,” but it’s never good news when, “surgery
remains a possibility” according to ESPN.

All of this adds up to Orlando most likely remaining as the sixth seed and
being the ideal matchup for Indiana. They are currently only one game
behind Atlanta, but without Dwight Howard they will be less likely to catch
them and their three game lead over Philadelphia and New York may be
just enough to hold them off...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s

Lumping recaps into one big post seems like the easiest thing to do at this
point. Reminiscent of the Wolves’ recent play, all of the games and the
analysis has become so cookie-cutter, it’s a waste of time to even title
    two separate posts.

Here’s a breakdown of thought-processes after watching a game the last
    two weeks: Barea turns the ball over a lot; injuries are a pain, literally;
the transparency and often complete lack-thereof in what one would call
a “defense;” everyone just wants to shoot because if they don’t make
something happen, they won’t be on the team next year; injuries really
suck; Kevin Love is dearly missed, and I mean the K-Love at midseason,
not the worn down horse Adelman rides for 40 mins a night; there are no
wing players that have any capability, whatsoever, of creating a shot for
himself; and, finally, injuries are the bane of this entire team’s confidence.
    Screw ‘em.

It’s obviously clear what’s going wrong lately, and it really starts with that
last one with everything else piled on top, just as I listed them above. The
Rubio injury was the killer, but there are other ones that were serious blows
too. It started off with Malcolm Lee not even being able to debut until the
end of March. Obviously a rookie reserve going down isn’t going to make
much of a difference, but when role players like JJ Barea and Michael
Beasley go down, things start to get a little dicey. Add in Nikola Pekovic,
Luke Ridnour, and now Kevin Love, that completes the injury-cycle full-circle.

What we have seen, more prominently in the last three games, is a stronger
presence from the bench guys, who have seen an increase in minutes
because of the injuries. Guys like Anthony Randolph and even Michael Beasley
have beefed up their scoring punches. The reason being is because their
careers in Minnesota are indeed in jeopardy...READ MORE AT HOWLIN T WOLF

Too bad Kevin Love isn't playing. Would've been something to see to play Love and Jennings all in the same week.

No depth for the Timberwolves in this game due to the injuries. It should be a W.

Too many injuries for the Wolves but we'll see Peko at least

Let's hope that the guys take care of business. I really want us to get on a great roll for the playoffs and have a high level of confidence.

Also, I always hope for a Fesenko sighting although I understand that it could be hard vs the Wolves.

How far in advance do refs get assigned to games? I am just wondering if he was given this game because of what happened last game, as a way to keep things from getting out of hand.

Would LOVE to see a Fes/Peko matchup of the 2 Russian bears (yes I know Fes is Ukrainian, but close enough considering it once used to be apart of the old Soviet Union)

BTW per wikipedia , Fesenko wears a size 18 shoe. He also owns a 7'4" wingspan and 9'4" standing reach (same standing reach as Greg Oden).

This is either a "wow, we should crush them" kind of game or a "holy crap, we didn't show up, let them hang around, and they stole one from us" kind of game.

I've yet to learn how to predict which it's going to be, but the way we've played lately, I think we'll flirt with the latter, then ultimately wind up with the former. We're like half way there in terms of learning to finish teams off.

I think I saw some plays where they definitely looked tired last game. They seem to have that extra gear though that they can push through a lot of the time. Sort of like how we describe the spurs, but not on that level of course.

Basically, I don't think with sooooo many games with no more than 1 days rest, that there are NO games that are guaranteed that we should crush our opponents.

    I love that recap.

Based on how strong the team closed Friday, I'm anticipating a blowout here. Advantages all over the floor for the Pacers (West/Williams and Granger/Johnson seems almost cruel) and a fired up team.

To be honest, I'm more concerned with Mauer than Bavetta. Mauer gets caught up with crowds and takes over games. Ugh. One of my least favorite officials in any sport (Up there with Ed Hightower)

We should be right around where Peck's seats are.

Definitely the saddest thing about this NBA year was Rubio going down for the season and Minny not being in the playoff hunt.

Aw well, time to beat them by twenty.
