Eight Points, Nine Seconds Preview Review:
Jared Wade: Pacers Don’t Lose to Cavs

Despite their best efforts, the Pacers beat the Cavaliers. Before we focus on
the ugly near-loss, let’s point out the most significant takeaway from the
evening: the Pacers got their 17th win of the season outside of Indiana,
guaranteeing them a winning road record for the first time since the first
Roosevelt administration. Meaning Theodore. (I don’t actually know when
the last time was. Someone look it up and tell us all in the comments.
    Probably 2003-04.)

Excellent milestone for a team that has shown that they are capable of
winning against any team on any night in any building. Who really thought
that could be possible right now even 6 months ago?

Unfortunately, what has generally been a very encouraging season has also
included plenty of discouraging games like tonight. It was a dull, mundane
game where the Pacers seemed to be going through the motions. And that
seemed to be enough to beat a team that, as Mike Wells noted on Twitter,
was “2-13 in their last 15 games” and has “called up 7 guys from the D-
League this season.” Until it wasn’t.

Depending on your perspective, the Cavs either started forcing a bunch of
turnovers late or the Pacers started to choke the game away and cough the
ball up repeatedly. The outcome was the same. Cleveland cut the lead to 8.
Then 5. Then 3. Then 1. Stop me if you can see the pattern. Soon, they were
winning and extending a lead as the Pacers looked incapable of scoring.
Indiana went nearly 6 minutes and 42 seconds without hitting a field goal in
fact. A George Hill three-pointer ending that impressive run of futility. And
it was a really good thing he showed up for work today. He added two layups
soon after to tie the game and then give the Pacers back the lead.

His actions after that, however, will likely make most forget that the team
probably would have lost...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s

    • How do we create excitement during a two-game stretch against the
same lottery-bound team? Bad jokes and random observations by
yours truly will have to do.

    • Effort can be an issue against bad teams for the Pacers. When
Granger brings the hustle, the rest of the team usually follows suit.
Early in this one Granger set the tone, not just hitting shots, but
moving without the ball and playing defense. Unfortunately neither
Granger or the rest of the team maintained it for 48 minutes.

    • Shouldn’t Omri Casspi have to get at least 20 minutes per game to

Quick Recap: Or, of dashed hopes and Lester Hudson

MVP: Danny Granger. Granger did his thing from all over the court on
Wednesday night, taking the ball to the post for some easy baskets while
hitting his jumpers whenever he got a look at them. He finished with a
game-high 23 points, and his contributions in overtime sealed the game for
    the Pacers.

LVP: Anthony Parker is just returning from an injury, and playing 37 minutes
on the latter half of a back-to-back clearly didn’t agree with him — after a
great game on Tuesday, Parker managed just 7 points on 2-8 shooting from
    the field.

X Factor: The Cavaliers had absolutely zero success keeping the Pacers off
the free throw line. David West, Tyler Hansborough, and Danny Granger are
all great foul-drawers, and they got the Cavs to fall for their tricks time and
time again, leading to the Pacers getting 9 more points from the free throw
    line than the Cavs did.

Turning point: With the Pacers up two and just over two minutes remaining
in overtime, Danny Granger nailed a 3-pointer to put Indiana up by 5, then
hit an 18-footer less than a minute later to seal the game for Indiana. The
Cavaliers gave the Pacers much more of a fight than they must have been
expecting, but the Pacers’ execution on both ends of the floor was simply too
much for the Cavs in overtime.

That was...sad: Lester Hudson made a game-tying 3 at the end of regulation
against the Nets on Sunday. only to watch his team lose in overtime. On
Wednesday, Hudson hit a game-tying floater at the end of regulation, only to
watch the Cavs lose in overtime yet again. Hopefully Hudson’s next clutch shot
will actually lead to a Cavalier victory.

My Dad got the Tom Obrien tickets tonight, sitting behind the visitor bench. Super stoked first time I've got to sit almost-courtside this year.

This one won't be close - I hope. This Pacers team beat the ZOMBIESONICS! The Bulls! The Heat! The Mavs! The Celtics! The Pacers always seem to play badly against the bottom feeders, almost like they are slacking off knowing they will win. And when they lose, David West goes off.

Paul has missed a couple dunks recently that should have been automatic.

A little odd, but I am not too worried about it.

By the way is the Pacers horrible execution on offense George Hill's fault? Trying to figure out how some think DC is better than Hill that's why I'm asking.

This game reminds me of a lot of games this year when the Pacers didn't execute on offense this year with DC in the lineup. Only they got blown out because DC can't play any defense...

No. Our offense relies heavily on our post game to have it going. GH or DC cannot influence this.

Yup. Just trying to point out the obvious to those who have insinuated Hill has stalled the offense that last couple of games. (he hasn't)

He has run the offense worse than DC, though.

The main reason is that Hill looks for his shot a lot while DC at least looks to initiate.
