Eight Points, Nine Seconds Preview Review:
Jared Wade: Pacers Win a Wild One in Houston

In an NBA season, only so many games are going to be memorable. In
a shortened season, you would think each might stand out more. But it’s
been such a blur at times that it can be hard to remember who you
played last let alone the particulars.

The Pacers won’t have any trouble remember tonights game, however.
That much is for sure. And that is probably both a positive and a negative.
See, Indiana got up early and it looked like they might have a convincing,
wire-to-wire win on their hands. Not so easy though. The Rockets started
to out-play the Pacers towards the middle of the second quarter and blew
their doors off in the third.

Then Danny Granger started to heat up. On the night, Indy’s captain stuck
6 of his 8 three-point attempts and helped the Pacers get back to even as
the fourth-quarter clocked got closer to zero. Houston wasn’t about to
just let the Pacers have this one though and a wild series of possessions
led to the extra minutes of basketball. Everyone was drilling tough, tough
jumpers and it looked like Indy was going to make just one more play
    than Houston to win it.

Unfortunately, Darren Collison twice found himself at the line with a
chance to virtually ice the game for his team. And both times he missed
one of the shots. The Pacers still had one last chance to win it, but a
fairly fruitless possession yielded nothing better than a David West iso.
And he didn’t do anything useful, instead opting for a few fakes and a
    contested jumper that missed badly.

Indiana really looked like the better team in overtime, however. Despite
a missed dunk by dunk-contest participate Paul George, they quickly
extended a lead. George made up for it by preventing a layup on the
other end with a chase-down block and then converted a three-point play
back on offense as he scored at the rim plus the foul. Granger followed
that with a three-pointer and the Pacers were up six. Some good defense
and a few nice offensive boards by George later, and it looked like it was
    all over but the confetti.

Then Dragic hit a three. And then George made a bonehead turnover in the
back court, trying to throw a flailing pass up-court over Chandler Parsons,
who took the ball and laid it in the hoop. A 6-point lead was now 1 with
    less than 40 seconds...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s

    Hoops Analyst:
    Harlan Schreiber: Bad Shooting

There have been some notable really bad shooting performances from
usually pretty good players this season. Most notably, Lamar Odom is
shooting 34% after shooting 53% last year. Plenty other players have
also looked ugly too: Toney Douglas, DeShawn Stevenson, Ron Artest,
Baron Davis, and Jason Kidd are other well-known players hovering
below 36%. But is there really more bad shooting this year than
normal? It would seem that this might happen in a lockout year but
the fact is not confirmed by anecdotal evidence. Just to see how true
this might be reallly be, I ran a search of all players who played more
than 30 games and 15mpg, who were under 37% from the field. These
benchmarks numbers are somewhat arbitrary but shooting below 37%
does seem to be a particularly ugly shooting accomplishment and nice
line to draw. So, let’s take a look at the yearly number of players who
fall into this category since 1997-98:

    1997-98: 8 players
    1998-99: 22 players*
    1999-00: 7 players
    2000-01: 12 players
    2001-02: 11 players
    2002-03: 11 players
    2003-04: 10 players
    2004-05: 9 players
    2005-06: 5 players
    2006-07: 5 players
    2007-08: 9 players
    2008-09: 5 players
    2009-10: 5 players
    2010-11: 8 players
    2011-12: 17 players**

*50 game schedule, eligibility was reduced to 20 games
**through 50 games so far, threshold reduced to 20 games

Bingo. We have seen more players really crap out this year then usual.
In fact, the only worse season was 1998-99, the other lockout season,
which was highlighted by particularly poor play. This year, the NBA has
looked relatively crisp considering the rushed start to the season but a
mix of youngsters who need more time to develop (Kemba Walker,
Ricky Rubio) and vets who just might be cooked (Artest, Maggette,
Kidd). The age distribution of this year’s horrible shooting group is
spread mostly in the early 20s or the over 31 set and there are no
players between ages 26-30 who are in this group. History indicates
that the older guys will have problems arresting the declining. Of the
30-odd players over age-32 who made this list of bad shooters since
1997-98, only a few were able subsequently improve. John Starks, who
was awful in the lockout season improved his shooting the next few
years but still was not good; role players Lindsey Hunter and Jerome
Kersey improved a bit, though their volume of shooting was so low that
the improvement was not statistically very significant. As such, it’s safe
to assume that most of the older guys who shot poorly this season are
not likely to bounce back, unless something weird happened (Odom is
the best candidate for some improvement, given that his problems
appear as much emotional as due to decline).

Too many. As Bandwagon as his fans are, they probably don't even know that he's out for this game.

Need this one. 1/2 game behind 3rd. 2 games ahead of 7th. The difference between 3rd and 7th is way too close for comfort.

Hopefully the Heat beat the Sixers. We're not catching the Heat so might as well pull for them to keep Philly off our back. I give Detroit zero chance of beating the Magic. Prove me wrong Mo-town! Ya filthy craphole.

Knicks fans droning on about Chandler being better than Hibbert. I hope Hibbert smokes that guy and steals his lunch money while he's at it.

Yes, but this time the Pacers get the W.

Really no reason for the Pacers not to win tonight.

I think Chandler is better than Hibbert right now. I'm happy to have Hibbert though. He's grown a lot over the past few years where Chandler has been putting up similar numbers since '04-'05. I'll take my chances with Hibbert cause he's such a hard worker and wants to be better.
