Well, it's official now, after scoring 20 points in the win over the Wizards, Danny has totaled 9100 points in his career, passing Chuck Person at #10 in the Pacers' all time list.

Too bad he didn't score 23, that would have been freaky

And as Peck noted in his initial post, he'll probably pass Freddie Lewis at #9 and will have a decent chance of passing Mel Daniels at #8 before season's end. Yup, Mel Daniels the HOFer. Sounds pretty good eh?

If you didn't already know (I didn't), the Wizards telecast last night showed a graphic of NBA players who graduated from the University of New Mexico. The best two players on that short list? Danny Granger (04-05) and Mel Daniels (64-67).

So weird, right? Danny passes the other Pacers UNM star on the scoring list just months before that star goes into the HOF, all while Danny gets compared to the other Pacer going into the HOF that day due to his 3pt making and clutch scoring.

    Danny Granger tracking update...

He's at 9245 career points now, only 12 points away from #9 Freddie Lewis. So Danny should overtake him next game.

And Danny is only 69 points from #8 Mel Daniels, with 5 games to go. So Danny reaching #8 in the all time Pacers scoring list this season seems a lock.

I did a quick origin search on the surname "Hibbert" to see if it was Dutch...

    AND...........

    It's not, it's English

It sounds like Mel will be in the house for the Chicago finale when the team honors him and the ABA championship teams. Can you imagine if Danny passes him that night?

geez, 2 more seasons and he will be at number 2 most likely. pretty remarkable. I can't see him catching Reggie, but I do think he will hit 20,000. At his current average he would hit it in his 14th year. And we all know Danny plays an "old mans game" one that doesn't rely on athleticism to be effective. I certainly can see him hitting the 20k mark.

EDIT: just looked, if Danny hit the 20k mark, he would be 38th all time. But that is today and there are some other current players who will certainly hit 20,000. The next player to do it should be Antwan Jamison who is 98 points away.
A couple points. If Granger has the same exact scoring average as Reggie, it would appear to me if he played as many years as Reggie it would be very close.

What would determine things would be games played. How many games are lost to injury. How many extra playoff games, etc.

One edge Granger has is he has played more lockout games already. I didn't check to see how many lockout games Reggie missed during his lockout season, but the schedule called for 50 games. Granger has missed 2 so far in this 66 game lockout season.

Well okay, but has Roy ever stuck his finger in a dike to stop a flood? Or even more possible has he ever painted something with Dutch Boy paints?

There's probably more comparisons to be made.

In his younger days, before he was making millions, did he ever split the bill on a meal with his date?

    Fantastic!

With a normal pre-season and training camp hopefully Danny won't slump so badly at the beginning with his shot next year, if that happens he's pretty much an All-Star lock if we play to our expectations/ similarly to this year, which, so long as PG improves a bit and we bring Hibbert back (almost a certainty) should happen.

To Danny's credit I believe his style of game (below the rim, shooting the basketball, and a developing post game) should allow him to play at this level without decline for at least as long as Paul Pierce has, into his mid 30's giving him imo about 5 years left of his prime, which should be more than long enough as a championship window provided the team is good enough.

It's amazing to look at Danny's stats pre and post all star game

    Pre

    18.0 ppg
    4.5 rpg
    1.8 apg

    .382 from the field
    .351 from 3
    .844 from the line

    33.7 mpg

    Post

    19.6 ppg
    5.2 rpg
    1.7 apg

    .463 fg%
    .423 from 3
    .900 from the line

    32.4 mpg

The stats look positively reggie-esque and I think he can put them up all year next year (at least similar) , the first half of this season was an abberition.

Just for fun too here are his sexy april stats.

    22.5 ppg
    5.3 rpg
    2.2 apg

    .492 from the field
    .508 from 3
    .949 from the line

    33 mpg

If he keeps them up and the team wins out/ goes 3-1 he should be player of the month.

Funny, he's been so hot that he's boosted himself back up to around his season last year overall statistically despite his awful start

    18.8 ppg
    .420 from the field
    .384 from 3 point land
    .868 from the line

    .546 TS%
    18.8 PER

All while playing much better defense on a whole, which isn't quantified by basic statistics.

Danny is now at 9,269 points in his career. He's passed Freddie Lewis and moved up to #9 All-Time in Pacers franchise scoring.

In the excitement of beating Houston we kind of neglected that Danny Granger has passed Chuck Person for 10th in all time scoring for the Indiana Pacers.

With his 32 point performance he now has a career total of 9103 bringing him to 10th.

Assuming that he does not suffer any injury or does not go into a complete tailspin he should pass Freddie Lewis this season for 9th and he has a decent chance of catching Mel Daniels for 8th.

Assuming he is back next season and assuming he has a normal scoring year for him it is not out of the realm of possibility that he could jump all the way up to 3rd on the all time scoring list.

He will never catch Reggie Miller but if he can get another two years here he should be the 2nd all time leading scorer in Pacers history.

Ironically both Danny & Reggie have the exact same career scoring avg. at 18.2ppg

Congratulations to the Captain, Danny Granger and here is to several thousand more points before your career is over.

    1. Reggie Miller 25279
    2. Rik Smits 12871
    3. Billy Knight 10780
    4. Roger Brown 10058
    5. Jermaine O'Neal 9580
    6. George McGinnis 9545
    7. Vern Fleming 9535
    8. Mel Daniels 9314
    9. Freddie Lewis 9257
    10. Danny Granger 9103
    11. Chuck Person 9096
He could easily be #3 at the end of next season.

With Granger sitting out the Pistons game and likely the Bulls game as well (as per Mike Wells), he'll close the season at 9302 career regular season points, #9 on the Pacers' all time list and just 12 points off Mel Daniels' 9314.

Assuming continued good health, Danny is quite capable of putting up 1500 points in a season, which as others have noted means that he can potentially move up to #3 on the Pacers' all time list as early as next season, just behind Reggie's 25279 and Rik's 12871.
