Default 30th in Assist Per Game

So just checking out the Pacers on ESPN and we are 30th in assist per game, my question is this how much of this is due to system and how much of it is due to our lack of ability in this area.

Wondering about this for several reasons, even though we are 30th we are still doing fairly well, if this is a system thing then it won't really matter who we bring in ex. Kendall Marshall, but if this is a inability type situation then we could really improve this team.

    Please fill me in...

We've been towards the bottom for a couple of years now....

EDIT: I like Marshall and if we have the chance we should probably draft him.

Well, I tried to explain this in this thread:

    http://pacersdigest.com/showthread.php?t=70973

In summary, I think that it is a system thing. Our players look to pass first upon reception (with the exception of Barbosa and Lou when he's within 10 feet of the basket) and thus tend to hold on to the ball too long but often get to create better shots. We also work in the post a lot. We also draw a lot of fouls.

This is not a recipe for a high APG. This is a recipe for drawing fouls and wear down the enemy team. I like it as it more often than not leads to winning basketball.

I'd like us to get better on this, though. Kendall Marshall would improve us on that aspect. If anything, we would run fast breaks better.

Well yeah, our point guard doesn't really set up the other guys for good shots, our starting wings can't really control the ball that well (handles and passes), our backup guards are shoot-first type of players... Hibbert is probably our most consistent passer

Thanks, yeah I also noticed we are near the bottom in FGA, which actually surprised me but if we get to the line like your saying that also explains it. I have seen games where we tend to have tyler taking jumpers as soon as he gets it, and danny doing the same, roy seemed to take forever when in the post, D west seems like the main source of assist for PGs, specifically, on our team.

    But thanks though.

If the Pacers had a legit "floor general" point guard things would be alot different.
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

Not exactly true. He started the season very good and posted several 7+ assists games. It all went downhill after the second Miami loss and he picked it up again at the loss against the Suns.

DC has averaged about 5 assists his entire career and it doesn't matter whether we won or lost big the assists aren't there.

DC had 14 games with double digit assists while he was with the Hornets including a game with 20 and a game with 18 assists.

With us he has had 6 games with double digit assists. He also had 4 games without any assists for us.

DC's problem in that aspect is that he is quite inconsistent as most of his play stems from his psychology. When he has it going he can get several assists. When he does not has it going, he will not get a lot of assists and this will hurt his averages.

Our problem is within our offense plan. It's not DC, Danny or Roy.

34/50 games with 5 or fewer assists and as far as his psychology is concerned many games that he had few assists did not affect his scoring.

So, 34 games with 5 or fewer and 20 with 10 or more. If that's not inconsistent I don't know what it is

Anyway, I don't know how DC's assist numbers factor in in this conversation.

As I said, I believe it's a system thing and not a personnel thing.

Apparently, you disagree. So, let's agree to disagree

Our system is built to draw fouls and play physical. The Pacers are playing at a good level this way, I'm not worried.

We won't. He's now projected as a lottery pick. Never has an injury boosted a guy's stock like Marshall's broken wrist.

Marshall is ok, but I don't think he'll be available at our pick regardless. He isn't a player who should be automatically a lottery pick, rather a late lottery or very early 20s pick, but he wouldn't be available anyway.

Personally I have always thought assists were kind of an overrated stat.
