    Default Superstar Calls

First, some background to this conversation.

    Spoiler Spoiler:

This guy proceeded to tell me, "Rose gets tossed around and fouled on nearly every position and he never gets any calls" to which I responded, "Thats a bunch of bull (no pun intended), if anyone gets fouled every time he touches the rock its Hansbrough"

What I'm trying to ask is, who do you think gets the superstar calls, and specifically, where does Rosie rank among the most BS calls for the superstar?

Rose gets a lot of calls. He just doesn't get as many as he wants. The man drives a lot and should expect to get bumped around a lot.

I think other than the premier players of the Heat, Lakers, Knicks, Clippers, and obviously the Bulls, there aren't really a lot of superstar calls. I think after we get past the five huge market teams, it has to do more with the official and whoever pissed in their Cheerios that night.

Take a superstar on a bad team, for example. Sometimes Deron Williams gets every call, but when he whines about not getting those calls all of the time, he'll get T'd up.

Don't think there's much wrong with your list, honestly. Pretty complete.

There was a brief, and very decisive, and altogether unprecedented, outburst of genuine officiating, and it was directed at the best player in the world, and that, my dear young person, simply is not done."

Lebron #1? Really? Above Westbrook, Wade, and Durant?

When Lebron gets fouled it isn't too noticeable because he's such a big dude.

Btw how is Durant not even on your list...?

I'm sensing some personal bias here.

Not at all. I was being completely honest when I made the list. Lebron cries and the foul is called, thats what I'm talking about. And I didn't include Durant because from what I've seen of him lately (only a few games, so I could be TOTALLY wrong) he doesn't complain nearly as much as Westbrook does. However, I think that he would likely be number 11 or 12.

How often the superstar gets the call based on him being a superstar, whining or not.

Shaq was the worst of all time, especially as his footwork got slower and he started just running people over. The refs adjusted the rules for him, not the other way around.

Dwayne Wade is second only to Michael Jordan in bailout calls of all time IMO. He is first in this day and age by a long shot.

Honestly even though I am not a fan of his I don't think LeBron gets as many as you would expect him to.

Second to Wade would be Rose though.

If the NBA has any fault it is that they have created a system that rewards slashers and drivers and penalizes defenders.

The other problem is that the disparity in contact on certain types of shots is vastly different than on others.

Example Wade cuts across the floor to the hoop Roy is running backwards away from him and even pulls his arms back to show the refs he is not making contact but because he is moving and Wade runs into him (even though he did everything short of cartwheel to avoid him) he is whistled for a foul even though Wade initiated the contact and there was no real contact other than hip to hip.

Conversely later that night I'm watching Andrew Bynum jump in the air to retrieve a poor pass when he is bumped in the air by David Lee and causes him to move a good 1-2 ' laterally from where he started going up. He then comes down and goes up for a shot but which is blocked but the defender is all over his body with no foul call and he gets the ball back to pump fake Lee off of his feet and finally gets the call after he comes down on top of him.

Wade initiated the contact, there really was no contact and certainly nothing that impeded his shot and he gets a foul call. Bynum is all but ridden piggyback style by Lee & Rush with nothing called until they finally knock him down.

It's not so much superstar call or even what team you are on call but they give every benefit of the doubt in the world to the slashing wing player.

If they called Shaq fairly, he would have averaged forty points a game.

Most of the complaining about calls is unjustified. If you watch a game objectively, superstars have the ball more so they get fouled more. Superstars definitely get more leeway when arguing calls or when having techs called against them though.

That's not to say there aren't bad calls. There's bad calls constantly. There's just not a major conspiracy to reward certain teams over others.

By far, Dwayne Wade gets the most superstar calls. Lebron makes it to the foul line a lot but he usually earns it by getting smacked around in the process. Same with Dwight Howard - He gets fouled almost every time he goes up for the shot. I think that Derrick Rose gets whacked a lot too but half of the time he's initiating the contact by jumping into the defender. If I'm doing a top 10 it would have to be:

    1. Wade
    2. Durant
    3. Paul Pierce
    4. Carmelo Anthony
    5. Rose
    6. Lebron
    7. Kobe
    8. Deron Williams
    9. Westbrook
    10. Dwight

I will admit that the superstar treatment seems to be fading a bit. It's not nearly as bad as it used to be back in the 80's and 90's.
