The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • Odd Thoughts: Heat lowered to room temperature

Sometimes a trend just starts to develop. It can be good or it can be bad but trends sometime occur for reasons that outside of our control & other times we can influence the trend.

To start the season & for the first 20+ games the trend was that we were more than just a good team. We were really an elite level team but a team that was probably overachieving.

Thus trend two began where we not only played poorly on most nights but we could not even beat teams that had winning records or .500% records for awhile thus causing us to be a middling team that definitely overachieved at the beginning of the year.

But quietly and without much fanfare the trend since the last time that we played the Heat in Miami and lost at the buzzer is that the team is beginning to trend back up. Not to elite levels like they were early in the season but to one of the better teams in the NBA again and slowly but surely a couple of players who really truly were playing awful basketball have begun to put together a string of decent games in one of their cases and now two really good games in the others case.

Were not going to hide it because there weren’t many of us who weren’t griping about them so we will just say that the two players were Roy Hibbert & Darren Collison.

Roy has steadily been working his way out of his hole and has put together a string a decent games and a few really good games. Collison though has really struggled till the Milwaukee game where he finally got his groove back and tonight were he was everything we ever wanted him to be (other than a pure point guard because God love him he just does not have the court awareness he needs for that) but this is the Collison we were getting early in the season when as a team we were kicking it.

Yes I know we can’t get to excited but I will take no excuses from anyone about the Heat tonight being tired.

Yes I know they played yesterday, but guess what this was our 4th game in 5 days as well. Remember we just had Sunday off after playing 3 in a row.

That Phoenix loss really kind of stings right now because a bounce here or a stop there and we would have had a 4 game winning streak, as it stands now we will have to suffer with being 3-1.

I can’t even begin to tell you how big these two wins were for us on so many levels. First and foremost from a practical standpoint these last two wins have kept us % points ahead of Atlanta and this is huge because ending in the 5th seed means home court vs. the 76ers right now as opposed to being the road team vs. the Orlando Magic.

Second of all beating the Heat was just a huge psychological barrier to overcome for our players and you could hear it in their voices and in their statements after the game. They were talking about how when they play up to their potential they can beat anybody. Overconfidence? Maybe but I think we need a little swagger as well.

Thirdly I am just of the opinion that winning begets winning, just like losing begets losing. Sometimes you get on a winning streak and stick on it and you don’t know why same for losing streaks. Well were winning and if we can take care of some more of these home games then we might actually be able to end the season on a high note and not back into the playoffs like we feared. Obviously we have the dreaded Texas two step coming up but as long as we can take care of the Nets and Wizards prior to going down south we should be ok even if we can’t take either of those games (which winning one or both is not out of the question).

Lastly we won in front of a sell out crowd or at least a near sell out. The Heat games are really odd because you know a lot of people are there to see LeBron or Wade or just the spectacle (nobody comes to see Bosh) but there are really very few die hard Heat fans there (or more to the point hard core bandwagon fans). Generally the crowds that are there are very pro Pacer and tonight was not different. I would say that at the end when the game was out of reach and the fans were giving the team a standing ovation that at least 75% of the field house was clearly giving the Pacers a standing ovation.

Oddly enough though the most amusing fan of the night was sitting right next to me. Due to circumstances my family was not able to attend the game so Vnzla81 got the call to come in off of the bench and go to the game.

This was special for a couple of reasons.

    1. He’s really a great guy. I wish more of you guys could meet him in real life because you wouldn’t want to strangle him like you do on the forum.
    2. Danny Granger led everybody in scoring, played great defense, rebounded and just generally had an outstanding game and he had to sit there next to me and groove on it. The sweetest part of this was me getting to tell him that not only did Danny lead this game in scoring but he also more than quadrupled Monta Ellis scoring tonight. He even had to choke out a few compliments for Collison & West.

Some observations from the game. Frank was losing his mind tonight on the refs. He was doing everything in his power to not get his second “T” and be ejected again but honest to God he one time had to turn away from the refs and his face was beet red & he brought his arms out from the side to under his arm pits quickly to the point that he looked like a chicken preparing to cluck. I refer to this Frank as Psycho V.

Lance Stephenson almost got a “T” from the bench in the 3rd quarter when the refs. called Roy for that offensive foul. Fortunately the one ref who was screwing us most of the night #59 Gary Zielinski just told him to sit down. Had that been Crawford I’m sure Lance would have been invited to go to the showers early.

As bad as Zielinski was I have a feeling that Haywood was wearing his # 3 flojo under his uniform. It did seem tonight like he was giving us the benefit of the doubt calls that he normally doesn’t give us.

Anyway this was just a great solid win in front of a large crowd. Will it translate into more fans in the stands? I don’t know but apparently Bob Kravitz is going to put out an article today chastising the locals for not supporting the club more. Maybe this win with all of the other semi pro ball and H.S. ball being about over with will give us a few more casuals.

On a slightly more somber note they finally announced Jeff to the crowd tonight and did a tribute video to him, which was really fun to watch btw because they showed his last dunk at M.S.A. (he scored the last basket there) and they showed him doing dunks as a rookie. I am just very grateful that the crowd was very large and gave Jeff the standing ovation he deserved.

I hope that the Pacers do something else for him and would like him to speak to the crowd but it sounds like he is going in for surgery and I don’t know if I would want him to speak at the last home game as that will be filled with Bulls fans making the pilgrimage down here. I would not want him booed.

    Let’s grade the players tonight.

Danny Granger: A+ Yes he could have shot a little better from the field but he set the tone early on and he had almost the perfect combination of picking his shots and passing. Not to mention hitting the boards and rock solid defense all night. Simply put in a game filled with all-stars (not him) he was the best player on the floor for either team. Now don’t go crazy and say that I’m saying he is better than Wade or James, I’m just saying tonight he had a better game and I for one am glad that Vnzla81 was there to see it.

David West: A He hit the boards hard tonight and pretty much kept Bosh off of the glass. Chris made it by him a few times for dunks but we all know that David can’t rotate laterally. However the most impressive thing for me about David that I take away from today had nothing to do with the game. Go watch Jeff Fosters retirement video and see what he say’s about David West. If that doesn’t justify his salary I don’t know what does.

Roy Hibbert: A The human highlight reel. Ok that title is taken but he sure put some nice highlights up tonight at the expense of LeBron James. One thing in both the Bucks game and the Heat game is that Roy is just a giant compared to their big men. In all honesty once again our starting shooting guard is as tall as both the Bucks and Heats centers and this really was huge in both nights for rebounding and just putting the ball in the hole. We got a lot of shots blocked but we never stopped going back over and over and eventually the refs had no choice but to give us the foul. Roy got to the line 6 times tonight, however he only converted on 3. So if he had any one thing you wanted to criticize it would be that. But other than that? He had a great game.

Paul George: A Yes we all loved that long shot. Some are saying it was half court I’m saying it looked further back than that but I’ll have to wait and see it again on replay. He was the victim tonight of the most egregious of fouls when he clearly cleanly blocked Dwayne Wade on a shot and they called him for a foul. He touched nothing but the ball. Wade as much as I like him gets bailed out more than any player since Michael Jordan and frankly it gets tiresome seeing him just make trip after trip to the line when he doesn’t deserve it nor need it. Anyway Paul hit two big three’s and helped the team control the glass, which when we control the glass more often than not we will win.

Darren Collison: A+ While Danny was the best player Darren was the most valuable player on our club tonight. He set the tone and he played at a pace in which the Heat guards just could not keep up with. Vnzla81 pointed out that he would have thought that the Heat would have ran Wade at the point and bring in more three point shooters but we both concluded that they were probably afraid that they would not be able to keep up or contain Darren. I am very happy for him because talk about a player being the whipping mule for a long time. He still can’t find the open man soon enough and he very seldom makes a good pass but when he is tuned in on both sides of the floor he certainly is a lot better than the player we have been seeing for almost 2 months now. His steal off of the inbounds after the Roy dunk happened so fast that I didn’t even see it as I had just looked down at my phone and when I looked up the score had changed and the Heat still had the ball out of bounds.

Leandro Barbosa: A Provided microwave type energy and scoring off of the bench tonight and his contributions were as large as anybody else’s on our teams. My God we’ve needed a player who can come in and hit shot after shot it seems like forever. But not to be overlooked tonight was that he was playing very sneaky defense and even at one time forced LeBron into passing off instead of a drive like he wanted. I really look forward to the time that both he and Hill are on fire together again like they were vs. the Clippers.

Tyler Hansbrough: B- If your not hitting your shot then attempt to get to the line. I would say going 8 times in 17 min. is a good effort on that front, ok that’s a lie, that is an excellent effort on that front. He also played a solid defensive game but once again he befuddles me with his lack of rebounding. Not sure what happens there but this drives me up a wall. But hard to knock a guy who is playing with both a broken nose and a fractured orbital socket.

Lou Amundson: C As many fouls as he had points, assists and rebounds combined. Not his best outing however it is hard for me to ever be too critical of Lou because I just like that fact that he just goes all out every min. he is on the floor. I think we have Lou to thank for the new psychotic Frank Vogel when it comes to officials though. Take that as either good or bad.

George Hill: C- Not really sure how this guy has such swings in his game either but man did he struggle tonight and not just from the field. Our half court sets when he was running the point were just atrocious and left us with rushed long distance jumpers on almost every shot. Now in the full court runs between him, Dahntay and Barbosa they run the fast break than almost any trio we have had in a long time as they understand spacing and the appropriate time to pass. But man that offense can bog down with him on point on occasion. Thank God we didn’t need him to score tonight either because that wasn’t going to happen. Good solid defense though, as always so that saves him from a lower grade.

Dahntay Jones: C He also was a victim of the protect the star at any cost foul system we have in the NBA. His flagrant foul was beyond bogus. In fact it was down right egregious and I have a feeling that call may be rescinded by the NBA. He didn’t get much time tonight but what I really like about him is that just like Lou there are going to be nights when he gets lots of min. and other nights where he will get very few but he will give you the same level of play and commitment either way.

Overall I just can’t say how much the bench has improved with the addition of Barbosa. No offense to A.J. or Lance but this guy is just better than they are overall and certainly brings what we need right now to the table.

This was a great win, the team just needs to take tomorrow off and prepare for the Nets on Wednesday.

I think he might relish hearing those boos from Bulls fans... although he wouldn't like it that they are in BLF.
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

This was a good win....the Heat had ZERO excuses for this loss....every one that mattered was healthy...and we beat them soundly.

At some point, I hope the Bandwagon Heat fans in the Fieldhouse and the casual Indy fan realizes that they have opportunity to actually root for a Team that can actually be competitive...even against the elite Teams.

Glad your mood has improved. See why you shouldn't be so pessimistic before the game? Actually, its really nice to see that pushing them to overtime a couple weeks ago wasn't a fluke. The teams getting better and its ok to go in to it planning to win.

Paul George's 16 and 10 tonight gave him his 1st (of many in the future) double double of his career!

            That deserves some dancing fruit...

            Some questionable fruit...

            And even the 100% vegetable!

The key to beating miami will always be to beat them up inside on the glass. Clearly they paid attention to the beating OKC gave them the night before.

I said before I wasn't completely sure Indiana wasn't capable of beating a contender on any given night. If they play the right way, they are certainly a threat, because they can offensively rebound better than just about anyone.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

I thought there were many worse calls (or no calls) than the block on Wade:

                - Wade just ran over Collison and put the elbow into him, and they called it on Collison
                - On a made three by Barbosa, Haslem just takes Hans and pile drives him into the cameras under the basket
                - A couple plays later Hans steals the ball and Haslem grabs him around his face (Haslem is a dirty ******* of a player)
                - At one point James takes a step, a hop then a step then passes the ball... no travel called (he probably had 9 or 10 travels last night)
                - The flagrant on Dahntay
                - And if you call the above, you have to call the Flagrant on Hans ensuing drive.
                - They called a foul on Hibbert on a Wade drive and bucket, when he never even really touched him at all
                - They called a lane violation of West. I don't think there was a single freethrow after that where someone wasn't in the lane, but never called again. I don't know what the grace period of getting in the lane before the free throw is, and West was there really early, but if you're going to call it, call it.

The refs were a complete mess all game. It is obvious that Lebron and Dwayne "crybaby" Wade are seriously protected, and that leads to a massive imbalance in the way the game is called, and that Hans is known as being physical, so they'll let people just beat the living crap out of him. I found myself getting worked up just watching the game, especially as I see this as a trend as of late.

For anyone who didn't know or maybe wasn't sure what Barbosa can bring to our team, last night was a good example. He can carry our team for short stretches offensively. He's extremely streaky and is more than capable of running off 9 straight points rather easily. Of course keep in mind next game he might go 0-6. That is just the type of player he is

I hate to make comparisons, but he in the way he can score "in bunches" reminds me of Jalen Rose.

As much as I want to rip the refs, we STILL beat the Heat by 15 points last night. Can't complain too much about that.

Last night made me excited for the reality this year of playoff basketball back in Indiana again. Imagine 5-7 games like that, and hopefully for more than one series.

I agree, Larry Bird needs to be making some calls to the Association about how bad the officiating is. When DC gets ran over by Wade and then Miami gets the ball and gets the call against Indiana. Its just ridiculous. Vogel had steam coming out of his ears on that one. Typically the offensive player has the right of way and you can't just bang into him with out a foul call.

How do we know Bird HASN'T been making calls to the league office? I'd have to think he was burning up the line after the Phoenix travesty.

At shoot arounds before the game, I said some arbitrary words of support to Paul George. He came over shook my hand and said "You picked a good game to come too, we're going to beat these guys."
