PHILADELPHIA -- Boston Celtics guard Mickael Pietrus appeared to suffer a serious head injury during the second quarter of Friday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers and was taken off the court on a stretcher.

There was no immediate word from the team on his condition.

Pietrus got tangled up with Philadelphia's Lou Williams while driving to the basket and hit the floor hard trying to force a shot attempt. His back hit hard on the court and his neck appeared to whiplash. Pietrus immediately grabbed for the back of his head and rolled over onto his stomach. Trainers and medical staff soon rushed to assist him.

The game was delayed for 10 minutes while Pietrus was attended to. He was immobilized before being taken off the court.

It was a scary scene for a Celtics team that not only has lost two players this season to heart ailments, but also watched Marquis Daniels endure a similar-looking scare last season. Daniels, who had a pre-existing spine condition, was lost for the season and needed surgery before returning to the team this year.

Daniels was one of the players around Pietrus as he was assisted to on the floor.

Pietrus started in place of injured guard Ray Allen.

    Praying for him, wow.

Thankfully this doesn't happen more often in the NBA. Surprising that it doesn't really.

definitely looked like he had some sort of nerve ligament catch there. Hope it turns out to be nothing more than a neck sprain. Good thing he didn't hit is head on the floor at that kind of snapping velocity.

Wow scary, it seems like you can almost hear when his head hit the floor. With that momentum, I hope he recovers strong.

Pietrus hospitalized overnight for tests - Boston Celtics Blog - ESPN

PHILADELPHIA -- Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Mickael Pietrus will be held overnight at a Philadelphia-area hospital to undergo further testing after suffering a questionable closed head injury during Friday's loss to the 76ers at Wells Fargo Arena.

Reading from a piece of paper after the team's medical staff gave him an update, Rivers said Pietrus had undergone an X-ray and a CT scan, but would be held overnight while undergoing an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

"Thatís all we know," said Rivers. "They are going to hold him overnight. But thatís all I can give you right now."

Rivers admitted it was a frightening scene on the court.

"It looked awful," said Rivers. "I saw it immediately -- I didnít think he hit his head, I wasnít sure, but I just saw his neck snap, so you knew that was bad. Obviously, he was throwing up on the floor, so that wasnít very good either."

For a Celtics team that has lost two players to heart ailments (Jeff Green, Chris Wilcox) and another to a season-ending wrist injury (Jermaine O'Neal), the injury is the latest blow to its never-ending health woes.

"Itís just been a hell of a year right now," said Rivers.

But he applauded his team's resiliency, even after Friday's game slipped away.

"We have a resilient group, though," said Rivers. "Iím so proud of our team -- we just keep sustaining injuries. But guys are just trying to play and win. Thatís really nice. ...

"Itís maddening, but it is what it is. We are passing the test. That's all we can do. It's just tough. Every night it seems like -- whatís amazing is it has nothing to do with age, itís the young guys. Things happen. But I keep telling them, weíve decided to be that grind team, we gotta keep doing that."

Pretty disturbing that he grabbed for the back of his head like that when his head didn't even hit the floor.

Ummm, You can hear it hit the floor, and vomiting is a sign of a concussion.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_head_injury
Closed head injuries are a type of traumatic brain injury in which the skull and dura mater remain intact. Closed head injuries are the leading cause of death in children under 4 years old and the most common cause of physical disability and cognitive impairment in young people.[1][2] Overall, closed head injuries and other forms of mild traumatic brain injury account for about 75% of the estimated 17 million brain injuries that occur annually in the United States.[3] Brain injuries such as closed head injuries may result in lifelong physical, cognitive, or psychological impairment and, thus, are of utmost concern with regards to public health [4]

    According to Steve Bulpett:

Mickael Pietrus has been cleared to travel and will see Celtic physicians upon his return to Boston today.

I watched it several times and didn't see his head hit the floor. I'll watch it again.

Yes, vomiting is a sign of concussion. You can get a concussion without hitting your head on anything, from the whiplash-like movement of the neck/head. It looks like that is what happened here.

Edit: On the replay without the ESPN banner in the way on the bottom, you can clearly see his head didn't hit the floor when he fell. He caught himself with his arms/elbows (it's those parts of his body hitting the floor that you can hear on some versions) and his head snapped back and rebounded:

Ugh. If he's been cleared to fly that's good news though - there must not be any major brain swelling.
