Lots of silly season rumors at Speedtv.com and around....

    Examples-
RHR's contract is up and Andretti wants to resign him... but Penske has serious interest too. Rahal as well.
Pagenaud was looked at as well by Penske but has an iron clad contract with Schmidt.
Briscoe could be out at Penske... or not. Unlike past years where Briscoe waited on Penske to make a decision on his future, this year he (or representative(s)) have already been actively seeing what offers might be out there for him. B.Rahal's team has supposedly shown interest as has Ganassi with Briscoe filling G.Rahal's current seat. (This would be Briscoe's 2nd Ganassi stint... altho G2 and not TGR this time).
Rahal to Rahal is looking like a done deal.
That means there's a chance both Rahal and Briscoe could end up teammates at RLL which then likely makes Sato the odd man out (assuming RLL doesn't field 3 cars)
Rubens is reported likely to leave KV and Schmidt is a potential destination.
Kanaan appears to be secure at KV but Visio is contemplating starting his own team.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

And it wouldn't even surprise me to see him win either....

If the news of Alex Zanardi's triumph in the Men's Individual H 4 Time Trial event at the 2012 London Paralympic games wasn't enough of a thrill on Wednesday, SPEED.com has confirmed two of the 45-year-old Italian's closest friends are working to enter him at the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

“He told a reporter yesterday for me to watch out because he wants to race at the Indy 500 next year," said Jimmy Vasser, who co-owns the KV Racing IZOD IndyCar Series team and drove with Zanardi at Target Chip Ganassi Racing from 1996-1998.

"And he wasn’t kidding and that’s not how we’re taking it. I’ve got to get him in a car at Indy next year,” Vasser said emphatically. “I spoke to Chip [Ganassi] and said we need to make it happen between the two of us before somebody else steps in to run him; he belongs driving for me or Chip or in a car we run together. I’m serious. Stay tuned.”

Ganassi told SPEED.com he and Vasser have only just started to discuss what it will take to run Zanardi at Indy 500--an event he missed due to the split between CART and the Indy Racing League--but remains optimistic it will come to fruition.

Zanardi racing in Indy is JUST the kind of shot in the arm move the series needs. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Indy NEEDS this to happen. I'm saying that this is the kind of feel good story that die hards like and more casual fans positively LOVE. I guarantee that if they make this happen, there are people out there who will come to the race or watch it on TV that would have never even thought about it before.

Add in the fact that we all know Zanardi is about as talented and gutsy as drivers get and you start to realize he couled have a real shot at contending. Can you imagine? An Amputee winning a race?

This is the kind of good pub that you simply cannot put a price on.

Alex Zanardi finally getting a well-deserved shot in the Indy 500 would be a nice story on its own, let alone with the adversity he has faced.

If it doesn't happen I hope it's not because Indycar refuses to budge on some minor technical/rules issue that could've be overcome with some common sense.

In other Indy news I read at Speedtv.com that the aero kits for 2013 are still on the table BUT they are talking about implementing them AFTER Indy. Why bother? It's Indy that needs the diversity and innovation IMHO. If you can't implement them for Indy then don't waste the marketing opportunity by implementing them for Detroit or whatever.

IMHO the series needs the aero kits as a way to put some of the 'spec car' arguments to bed and whatever the costs turn out to be they will be offset (and then some) by the series having different looking chassis and added storylines and resulting interest. And if they are there for Indy then you get the added free publicity as that would be a a newsworthy happening for the month... or two weeks of May.... The interest and reporting would be more widespread during May than at any other point during the season IMHO. And in May the impact could be more eyeballs that then stick around for the rest of the season.

It sounds like wanting to do it and being able to commit to the actual demands of a competitive 500 run are not making it sound like it will happen. Excellent interview with Zanardi. Well worth the read. A couple of snippets:
“Of course, yes, if you drive a car around Indy you’re kind of pushing luck a little bit, but I’ve done that before in my life (at other tracks) and the fact I had a bad accident doesn’t make me any more vulnerable than it was in the past.

“Actually, if I would break one of my legs it would only take a few minutes to fix it. In the past it was more complicated.”
“With a lot of sincerity and his heart in his hand Jimmy said, ‘As much as I would love to get you in my car to drive, you really have to do it with Chip,’” Zanardi said. “He probably knows that this is really also the way I feel. Can you imagine to do it again in a red car No. 4? That would be incredibly cool all for all the people that got a ticket to come watch me.

“Quite honestly, if ever I would decide to do something like this and Chip was interested, not just that it’s a good idea but a great idea, then of course I would do this.”

Zanardi stressed that the conversation “was purely hypothetical.”
“But if you ask me ‘Would you like to do something like the Indy 500?,’ of course I say yes. In a perfect world do you think you could still be competitive? I do believe I have the technical elements to once more do the job. But one thing is to have the elements, one thing is to have all the ingredients to takes to get the job done. Right now I honestly believe something is lacking.

“Therefore, there are other options, one of which may be waking up every morning and still have the freedom to decide what to do that day. When you get 45 years old and especially if you don’t have the necessity to earn the money it takes to put the macaroni on the table. You have to be sure you find motivation elsewhere. Right now, I’m using a lot of words to give the impression that I have no interest for such a great race, for a world to which I owe a lot because American racing really changed my life completely and not for the worse but to the better.”

Zanardi said it would be a compliment if asked to drive the 500’s pace car, but he noted potential trouble there, too.

“The problem is that I will start to spin (tire) donuts in front of the pack and all the drivers will not like that,” he said of his signature move following race wins.

Took a lot of stones to admit it but he's done with Foyt and probably Indycar unless it's as a road course sub.

Nice! I'm mixed on the red flag (woulda sucked if someone couldn't re-fire). But it played out fine and more green flag racing for the fans and competitors so in hindsight I have no problem with it.

The rumor that won't go away...

I wonder what it is exactly that George thinks he could do better?

I keep seeing comments saying Wheldon would still be alive if George was running the series. How so? Did George have an epiphany I'm unaware of about pack-racing? If Wheldon was still alive and George running the series it would only be because there wasn't enough funding to put Wheldon in a car for that Las Vegas race, not because there wasn't pack racing. IMO.

I'm the first to agree that the carnival huckster approach to last year's season ender with the challenge to take on Indy's best to an outsider was a bad idea and a good thing it didn't get off the ground. Yeah, ultimately it was Wheldon running in that spot for the bonus money but my opinion is that was a pr move to make sure the promotion appeared to have a taker.... but in reality Indycar would've found a way to have the Indy 500 winner in a car for that race anyway. And no matter what, Wheldon was a capable, experienced Indycar driver. So the promotion didn't put an inexperienced guy on the track.

So what does George change in the equation?

He may care about open wheel, I'll grant him that. But there's more to it than that.

The worse thing I see is that many of the changes I think Indycar needs it is the owners pushing against them. So if George is making a push to buy the series with several owners involved then I'm not sure I see how that is a good thing for the sport.
