Default Colts sign free agent DE Cory Redding

Not sure we can afford to keep Freeney now.

A building block for new Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano was acquired today when Baltimore Ravens defensive end Cory Redding agreed to terms on a three-year, $10.5 million contract, a league source confirmed for The Star.

    ESPN reported the deal.

Redding, 31, is a nine-year veteran with 25 1/2 career sacks who played for Pagano last season, when Pagano was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator. Redding had 43 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks in 2011 and at 6-4, 298 pounds he has the size to perform well in Pagano’s hybrid 3-4 defense.

Signing Redding also assures the Colts they will have a replacement for seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney, who is likely to be traded or cut because of his sizeable contract.

So far I am liking this new GM.

Drop 14 picks in the 6th to get a borderline starting RT. Get Redding and Wayne for 27 million. Now, what can he get for Freeney?

I would be shocked if he gets traded. Teams know he will get cut so why take on almost 19m?? I don't think nearly any team outside of the top 5 teams in cap space can. I expect them to just wait and get him for half that price if not cheaper.

How much of the 19 is a bonus??

Any team that specifically WANTS Freeney can only guarantee they get him thru a trade. Otherwise, if they wait until he's cut it's them against everyone else.

I assume there are a few teams that would at least have some interest in him.

But, since IMHO there's no doubt his days as a Colt are over, and I believe he's a bit overrated and overpaid at his age, I think it's possible the Colts can find a trading partner that wants to guarantee THEY get Freeney, but it will be small potatoes they get in return. But, that can be better than nothing... and might lead to a diamond in the rough.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

His base is 14 and 5 mill is bonus or dead money that the colts will have to pay. I would be shocked too if he is traded but you never know.

ya the Bears cant afford to trade for him. The Buccs and only a few others could trade for him.

Redding was just on JMV, and sounds like a pure sports nut in his own right. I think Indy is going to love this guy (Ed Carpenter is already hooking him up with pit passes for the 500)

Sweet, love the guy already. Hopefully he makes our run defense look decent for the first time since the SB run.
